I read what they did to the scanners and it seemed like a dumb idea but hey, this is Dust. None of my squad mates carry them anymore and I see one or two ... a day down in the Dust now. This was the first time I tried it in 1.8. I immediately hit the Supply Depot (there was still one in the map, thankfully) and dumped the fit. After battle I went in and removed the few remaining Scanners I had fitted. Two, not a big deal.
Double ugly beating with the Nerf Hammer of Doom. It is really funny to think of what a piece of useless gear the scanner is now. CCP/Shanghai killed TacNet so we would be forced to spend SP/ISK/AUR on scanners. Now we don't have the TacNet, we don't have scanners that are worth 1 solitary ISK and we have cloaking fields. Which seem a little OP unless you are in a Derp or a Tank. Even Tanks have to be careful as the scouts have two equip slots so the REs delivery system is nearly invisible.
Hmm. Maybe there is a pattern here?
And so it goes.

I didn't like scanners anyway. They are working as intended. They are long-range, directional scanners. Not your personal radar device.
In 1.7, they were just that. Scan, 360*, full idea of who is where. totaly eliminating any element of surprise.
Now, you have to rely a lot more on passive scans, and your eyeballs. it made the game a lot more interesting IMO. |

They shouldn't have been what they were in 1.7. But they didn't really need the massive nerfbatting they received, either.
Oh well. I'll just ensure there's a Calscout in squad to scan literally everything anyway.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.

Really? I like em. I use the proximity scanner for my squad from time to time. It's pretty good. Just doesn't have crazy range though

Now, you have to rely a lot more on passive scans, and your eyeballs. it made the game a lot more interesting IMO. The game was fantastic in Chromosome. TacNet showed you where your squad was, Red Dots showed up when they were targeted by Greens and occasionally Blues (never understood the separation). It made me feel like I was in the future, fighting a science fiction high tech war.
Now, nothing works, you have to target your squad to see who they are (no LOS, no luck sucka) to see their health bars. I didn't like the scanners when they dropped. We lost an equipment slot to use them and with the knowledge that the scouts were going to be cloaked SOON(bs) they seemed kinda pointless.
And now they are, again. Only funnier and uglier than before.
Don't go complaining about Mercs using the equipment CCP/Shanghai designed and forced on us. Point your finger to either Iceland or Shanghai, not to Mercs suffering under their incomprehensible plans.
Maybe they will start designing features to work like they want them to work first. Any reasonable gamer would have discovered the 360 degree trick. Took me under five minutes. I suspect many beat my performance.
And so it goes.

Nope Cal scout can't scan those cloaked Gal SGers. Honestly I am not complaining about cloaks. I think the are a neat idea (overused at the moment). But there should be some counter to them. Say if I have a complex precision scanner on my cal scout I should be able to detect a proto or less dampened scout when they are running. (walking or standing still let them hide)
Sorry for shooting you in the back. Now please look elsewhere so I can continue.

I LOL all the way to the bank Reading all these "the scanners are useless" threads.
I hope you all stop using them and there will only be me left!
The scanner is still very viable and I use it on all 75% of my fits.
Its IMO Worth using just for the psychlogical effect it has on the enemy team.

GalLogi? Cause all my main suits are designed to negate proto scanners on non-Gallente Logi suits. 'You've been scanned' doesn't scare me, its the Cal Scout that can see me at every turn, without my knowledge, that does it. Big Brother is watching, the game should say that when you're in the range of Cal Scout (I'm kidding, btw).

Yeah, TTK is up because the maps are huge and it is hard to find targets after some 'smart spawns' and yet it is too easy other times.
I have tested a couple multi-scanner builds, and it is OK, but it is a real pain trying to toggle between different equipment slots. I don't like pushing O to use the nanite injector (because it takes forever), but occasionally I'll throw out a hive or link at the wrong time. Same story with the multiple scanners, I highlight the one that's ready, and the one on cooldown pops out. Annoying.

I scratch my head when people QQ about the old 360 scanners, yet think the new 360 scanners (i.e. caldari scout) are just fine -- and the passive scanners don't even let you know you've been scanned.
Sure tells you who is using scouts and their passive scanning, though. |

Maddy with a scanner has a much higher scan resolution than a good scanner.
A Gal logi with an advanced scanner will light the enemy, including undamped scouts out further than the vehicle scanner, and keep them lit just as long as a basic scanner.
Protos, especially on a gal logi are seemingly valuable, how much so I will tell you next week.

Scans are a bit bugged, imo, it seems to me like if you are moving at all you get nothing. Scan window seems too narrow as well.
Otherwise, they work fine. They should be a situational tool, being perma-scanned was annoying and game-breaking.
I use them a little less than before but they are still valuable:
- Pause before you enter a socket. It's quiet... too quiet... scan. - Those pesky reds must have an uplink over there somewhere... scan - I only have 1 grenade left, let's be sure RE's are there before I waste it... scan
If I had a Gal logi I'm sure I'd use them even more, but with a non-proto scanner on a non-gallogi there are a whole lot of scouts who just don't show up so I'm better off using my eyes.... or randomly shooting the air, lol. (I am totally one of those guys who stops what I'm doing and starts looking around when I get scanned)

You should do some formal testing on the scan angles. As far as 1.7 went, you'd get the full angle even if you didn't wait for the scanner angle "bars" to open up fully. The same is probably the case with 1.8 scanners - since the activation animation is so quick, the bars don't widen to the full angle, but you still get the scan results within the full angle.
I would test it myself but can't be bothered since I don't run scanners at all anymore. Passive scans are where it's at. |

Yep.... this is pretty much it. They could have done something different like they do in blacklight - as in you get to see where everyone is for a while BUT everyone in the map knows where YOU are because you just used a scanner... it made the usage more tactical. Having said that... directional scanners are fine, situational and need to be used tactically.. not the I-see-everyone-all-the-time thing with low cooldown... I never used them before and am glad I never got used to them... I just use eyeballs and reflexes now...

Use the proto flux. Best scanner in the game right now. Standard scanners are actually not that bad anymore, but the quantums are useless due to their huge cooldown.

Make them a deployable equipment with a scan radius of 50 meters in a 360 degree area. With a pulse every 15 seconds. That way scans can be stopped more easily and give the scanner a better function. |
