Currently our NPE relys on lists of tasks for new players to follow but no NPE that relys on checklists is going to get new players up to speed quickly enough. Sure, some rather clued in players will get it and they will be able to deal with the fact that they are going to suck for months to come but most people, even after running through a long list of tasks meant to train them, are still going to be awful players.
What this game really needs is a mentorship system. Players who want to can use one of their alt slots to set up a mentor character. These characters would not gain any skill points, and would automatically be squadded up with new players prior to them being put into an academy match. A mentorship system like this would allow new players to see what it is like to be squaded up, and get 1 on 1 or at least small group tutelage in how to play the game, leading to longer term player retention and blueberries who actually know what they are doing.
The question is what would be in it for the mentors. I have played around with this idea for a while and I think that there are some options:
1) A rewards system similar to what exists for recruiters. Perhaps mentees are even counted as recruits thus making for easier programming for CCP.
2) No rewards. While this may seem strange take a second and think about it. A mentorship system that is build into the NPE would give mentors a chance to sell up their corps. The upshot of this is that it would let corps recruit hopeful players right out of the academy and allow small corps to more easily bolster their numbers. Players are more likely to want to keep playing with the one person who has helped them understand the game after all.
3) Very small Sp rewards for the main associated with the PSN. These would have to be right around 1,000 sp per match which would be in line with the sp you recieved once capped out and would not be unbalancing since it is such a small amount. The downside of this is that players probably wouldn't hop onto their mentor alts until they were capped out.

Another way to do this would be to link the WP of the mentored characters with the mentor's passive SPgain, increasing it at a higher rate or adding the SP gained (modified by a percentage) by the mentored characters in to the "main" for the mentor.

A mentorship program would certainly aid in getting newberries up-to-speed on the games operation, but a large problem that I can foresee is the mentor-to-student ratios becoming horribly out of scale. If I could offer a small tweak to your suggestion, I say a mentor character could be attached to one of the default NPC corporations. This way mentors can simply assist those who have just started out or have not been able to find another corp. |

Check out the Learning Coalition.

Its a group of corps specializing in mentorship. Each corp has their niche, but all are intended for helping new players manage their first few days/weeks/months.

The learning coalition is great, but what I want is for CCP not only to lend more legitimacy to mentoring programs by making them offficially sanctioned by CCP, but to make it an integrated part of the NPE thus making it much more immediate.
The problem with telling everyone to seek a mentor through the learning coalition is that new players need to have a mentor right away. They don't know to even ask for a mentor let alone where to start asking.
