This is actually what scouts say when they have no defence for their cloak.
Invalid reasoning, dumb comments, and denial...
Get good, eyes are OP, be more aware. There's no valid argument here, no real reason to support cloaks other than you suck and they make you good. So now you enjoy being UP, when two weeks ago you sucked. You haven't improved, you've just equipped a cloak.

Bull.
Cloaks are crap when used poorly.
Anyone who is aware of their surroundings can notice cloaks within 20m.
Below is what separates the noob cloakers from the smart ones IMO.
Noob cloakers will run straight at the target with a cloak on. Any smart heavy will see the shimmer and light you up. Noob cloakers also try to run straight through an area where fighting is going on. People will be hyper aware in that area, so you are as good as dead.
Smart cloakers will not run straight at a target. They will either flank around while cloaked, or if they haven't been noticed, and they aren't close to where the target will walk, they will wait. Wait for them to open their own flank, and then rush them. Smart Cloakers don't run though an area where fighting is going on. They use the cloak to hide their presence at range, and run on the outskirts of the battle. With people actively engaging other targets, they tunnel vision themselves, and have trouble seeing a cloak in their peripherals. Use this to your advantage and decimate a flank. When they start to turn to engage you, run until you break LOS. After that, cloak, and head in a direction that you wouldn't normally head in.
It's all about smart tactics and mind games. Welcome to the world of scouts.

Anyone can notice a cloak within 20m, thats hilarious. So anyone outside of 20m is just gonna kill you before you see them, right? You try to defend cloaks and make dumb remarks, scouts do not need to run around targets and have no run around targets since cloaks were introduced. There is no reason to flank because cloaks provide the advantage you need to down an enemy.
I'm pretty sure you haven't played much, scouts cloak run to the front lines and kill people and run away until cloak recharges and just repeat. This tactic is terrible but also terribly effective. I've been a scout for a long time, I've learned how to play and i can clearly see (and i can do it) just scouts attacking the front lines and acting wreck less and putting up scores.
You also seem not to know that cloaks aren't necessary....you explain that scouts can be effective by playing a certain way yet a cloak was not required previously and yet scouts were still great. Scouts had no problems flanking and coming up behind enemies before cloaks, 1.8 even gave scouts a boost.. So why all of a sudden do you need a cloak now to kill and be effective when before you did not?!
You clearly think flanking is key, you know selective targeting is the way to play... Yet none of this is happening, none of this is required to be effective with a cloak on. Whether it be hacking objectives, slaying foes, climbing ladders, placing RE's and watching them blow up, or camping with a cloak on... Etc...
Advantage you need to down an enemy, that's exactly the point. You must be a terrible scout before 1.8 to need such a massive crutch to even kill someone. That a ridiculous statement, it's also invalid. You don't need the advantage of a cloak, you surely do not need the cloaks ability to cover your terrible gameplay just to kill someone. Thats a joke comment and a comment that just show how 1.8 scouts lack the skills required without a cloak on, which only means a cloak is the only reason these players are doing well.
So,you provide 3 points, one is invalid and two seem to support the idea that cloaks are not necessary.

Forgot to mention, cloaks used poorly.. There is no way for this to occur. - cloaks are used to cover mistakes, mistakes which should result in the death of a scout... For example: hacking objectives without checking to see who is around first, crossing large open spaces in a fragile suit instead of picking right path around, or making terrible pathing mistakes only to get a drop on enemy because of the cloak.
There is 0 downside to a cloak, there is only a crutch used by scouts who make poor gameplay decisions and the cloak covers their asses. That is why people love cloaks, it hinders the chances of their mistake costing them, while provided a great offensive weapon to give them an advantage in fights that they shouldn't have received due to their poor choices. No downside, huge upside. Lower risk, higher rewards. No honesty, just lies and denial about their real use.

I am not arguing about how fun cloaks are... I am having a great time with my scouts. I am putting up constant top notch scores, high k/d, and even better WP than i did in 1.7
In three days i have had 3 poor games, two vs AE and one against a 7 tankbush q-synced lobby. Both games i did 0.75 k/d but still finished top 3 due to drop links lol all those dead teammates need to respawn. I am putting up high scores more often, I could pull off a 25-2 game every once in a while but now, routinely 16-4, 20-5, 14-7. Scores which I have the skill to reach but i am in no ways playing as well to deserve them consistently. Considering i run around like an idiot with RE's most of the time and play for fun.
Look, i am just trying to be honest about cloaks. I can provide great reasons why cloaks are not needed in the game. I can tell you how cloaks make up for poor gameplay and mistakes. I can tell you cloaks provide a greater offensive advantage to players whose gameplay doesn't warrant these opportunities to excel.
But it comes down to three things: 1. Scouts are doing great in 1.8 and do not want to go back to the times they had to struggle to succeed. Scouts were viable previously but now they easily excel without the skill previously required. It's like a scout previously couldn't kill anyone, or couldn't succeed ( lol ) but now things have changed and they don't want to go back to hard times when east mode is a click away.
2. People feel like the deserve it and will lie to keep their advantage because they aren't very good. Similar to the wanting to do better, but it's the belief that they should be good at the game. The game should be easy and they should have a chance to do well, even if that means using gear or equipment that are UP or unbalanced. There's a reason you don't see the worst classes, or the worst gear... Everyone wants to do well. People's lack of skill and their poor gameplay is covered up by great items, so these crutches help a player be competitive when they shouldn't be or help a good player stand out.
3. Again, everyone wants to do well and with that comes enjoyment. Cloaks are fun, just like i said. I am enjoying running a cloaked scout and enjoying my scores. When i enjoy something, i also don't want my enjoyment to end, so I will fight for what I want even if its not true, or if its not in the interest of others because I am selfish. People are selfish and will deny to keep their enjoyment.
I've read so many threads. People defend cloaks by providing arguments which actually support the removal of cloaks. They provide no reasons for cloaks to stay, they provide no arguments which hold water. People are self interest, easy mod chasing, pleasure seeking and therefore will gravitate to the best thing. Once they have the best thing, they will fight to keep it and make sure it doesn't get nerf'd and they lose it. So they make up lies, or deny its nay-sayers. They make up lies and deny, just like tankers have done... I hoped my fellow scouts would be better but they are not honest and objective as I would like.
Cloaks support poor gameplay, reward poor decision making, and even go as far as to reward mistakes. There are 0 downsides and only offensive and defensive advantages to cloaks and that is no right or fair. Scouts do not even need cloaks to play, yet everyone seems to forgot how great many scouts were in 1.7 |

Hmm no drawback? High CPU/PG ratings, you are still visible, you can't carry a weapon while cloaked...
There plenty of people without any problems with cloak, even I killed several of them. If you pay attention you can see them its not that hard. But if you blindly rush trough the map...well then you have other problems.
I could get sneaky kills before the cloak and I get them now. The cloak supports sneaky game play but that's it. Sure unaware palyers can be easily killed while cloaked but to honest that was true before as well |

I dont mind the cloak crutch making you invisible to scanners allowing you to run straight in the open without being ever noticed, who cares.
but it is wrong that the decloak animation takes several seconds before the scout pops up on the radar and in some shady areas the cloaked scout is really hard to notice. you get 3 SG rounds in the ass in the time it takes to decloak a scout and even if the scout is a scrub and misses the first time and you manage to turn around, well good luck killing him, he still has 600 ehp additionally to his cloak crutch.
imho firing a weapon should light you up like a giant candle and a scout firing a SG should instantly appear on sight and radar. he will still be able to kill me when he ambushes cloaked from behind but atleast he is going to die to my teammates if he does a poor decision. currently there is no downside to the cloak, high reward and almost no risk. |

Good lord I'd hate to see how these guys react to the TF2 spy or the PS2 infiltrator. Their cloaks function more naturally and make less noise when turning them on and off. Hell the TF2 spy is totally invisible while cloaked (sans cloak and dagger) |

Cotsy8 wrote: Anyone can notice a cloak within 20m, thats hilarious.
Underlined Comment: Heh. I've been busy with school, but I have been playing 1.8. You think they let in FA if you never play?
Rest of Post: I love how you stuck to one argument for all three points. It makes responding to this easier.
Every time, you say the same thing. "There is no tactics, Blues can just run straight up to the target and kill them"
I think you are just seeing Blues playing against other blues.
Try putting your Cloak on in a competitive enviroment. Like against people who use their eyes, and are aware of their surroundings. IT WILL NOT WORK.
So I'll say this: Never Balance a game around a players inability to play well

I feel like the only one having no problem with cloaks. My Tac puts them bitches down as they try and sprint through the open. Or if they lose a fight and bunny hop while cloaked, it's really funny actually. I've really only had problems with the ******* shotguns in my back 24-7. Need to get my scan precision up.
On my minja, I've had excellent success with the cloak. I use it mainly to skirt objectives and wait in corners. I usually dive behind cover, pop cloak and crouch. No one expects the crouch for whatever reason, they always swing the muzzle around at head level. Then once they turn around or run by, knife to the face! |

The scouts who get the drop on me now are the same scouts who got the drop on me in 1.7 and before. The rest get a really awkward funeral (sorry, I just imagined a visitation/wake with a cloaked dead scout and found it hilarious for some reason). The cloak is useful for avoiding peripheral vision and for those times where you have to cover stretches of terrain with limited cover (cloak and hug whatever is going to partially obscure you). It is not a panacea for stupidity. If you're bad, you're still going to get gunned down. Maybe you have an extra second to take someone with you, but if you de-cloak out in the open, you will die just like the permanently visible.

Sorry, I dont buy this 'running straight up to people' stuff.
At distance, while the enemy is distracted, breaking up exposure time by using cover/uneven terrain.
Considering I've had people firing my way even when these conditions are met, I have to doubt how consistently effective running straight up to someone would be.
FOV in general is kinda low and before 1.8 I've ran towards people and must have been just barely out of their periphery and/or they were focused on another part of their screen - I can imagine you could work tighter angles now with cloak, but I think it does require a lapse in focus on the part of the victim. However, an active cloak gives confidence for players to try it more often...
Honestly, I would be happier if they just ditched cloaks and give us a bonus to electronics and Biotics instead.
Frankly, balanced or not, it's too flashy and controversial in nature - unless they nerf it in to the ground, it will always attract a certain level of QQ as well as Tourists.

The cloak is a crutch straight from the CCP hospital, which players have been sending you to for a long time. Just be honest with yourself, the cloak has no drawbacks and rewards poor gameplay.
This I can't even count the number if times I've seen a cloaked scout run straight at me only to get a bolt pistol round to the head |

I'm a Nova Knife scout, and I use a cloak. Because of this, all I can fit on my suit is a standard Rail Rifle, and advanced Nova Knives... if I have a PG upgrade.
Honestly, my targets couldn't see me even before I got a cloak. I could run behind them for about a minute before they'd even notice that somebody is behind him, and the only time that happened, he thought I was his teammate! Needless to say, he regretted his mistake. The only things I really use the cloak for is hiding from tanks, heavies, sneaking around people that have already seen me (especially if they're decked out in proto gear. Turn the cloak on, scurry away, and hope he follows you to a spot where you can stab him. Then shoot them a few times, because advanced nova knives only do 150 Hp, which is actually the same as a melee attack from a heavy) , and running around stupid people like a jackass before I murder them (You'd be surprised how often that last one happens). |
