So, I'm finally able to get on tonight (after the bball game... Go gators!) for the first time since 1.8 dropped. I've decided that due to my impatience, the best way to spend my unallocated SP is to get a few suits to level 4 or 5 and wait on any others to 3 later because that takes a lot less time.
At the moment, I have enough SP left to get to level 4 in the Amarr commando or sentinel, but not both.
Which do I pick?
(If it makes a difference, I already have the Amarr assault to 4 and logi to 5. I have the Templar BPOs as well.)

Trick question. The answer is both with enough SP. I've been considering it, just need more reports on the Laser Rifle.

Personally, Sentinel.
Commando seems garbage to me.
Then again, the idea of having two plasma cannons/plasma cannon + exile assault is quite tempting...
I wallow in pools of blood and wash myself anew, I throw away my ugly self in order to become something beautiful...

If you're unsure, go for 3 on both and you'll have access to the LP variants to try the Protos out without wasting a lot of SP on indecision.

Nope nope nope. I am far too impatient to save up for level 4 and 5 (I WILL end up spending it on yet another weapon) so I gotta go to level 4 now.

Running commando and having fun. Lots of combination options. You already have assault and logi though. You might need a heavy to hold down a point someday. Depends on what weapons you are specced into. Commando goes more with your other suits but might be a little redundant if you want different roles.

If you prefer point defense, Sentinel. If you prefer offense and pushing objectives, Commando. But that's just me.

Give both a try. Put 1 point in each.
Then realise how amazing forge gun are and go full sentinel and forge gun all the time. |

Amarr Commando works wonders with the laser.
Amarr Sentinel definitely isn't as powerful as it was in 1.7, but still does quite well
I don't think I'd ever take my commando to proto though. The minor bonus to damage isn't worth it.

I'm agreeing with the others that say to try both. I won't say "USE THE COMMANDO OR LEAVE DUST!" or anything like that. A willing Commando is a welcomed one, though a Sentinel that holds his own is just as good.

I am loving both my commando and sentinel suits for different reasons, the commando is pretty much viable enough now to fill a few roles well and if you have 7 weapons prototype you won't be bored. The sentinel is just plain smashing and the new amarr slot loadout is a nice touch bringing a bit more damage while maintaining the tank. Depends on what you like to do more. I went proto sentinel and advanced commando but I fully expect to finish that suit off next... |

level 4 commando, with the new damage mod nerf the 8% damage buff is more useful. Run SCR and LASER or SCR charge and assault |

I would lean more towards Commando at this point but only because hardeners are taking a nerf. Swarms may be useful again but wait and see the reports before spending on the suit.

That may be what wins out in the end, if I can pull my proto swarms back out and actually get some use out of them a working commando suit would be an excellent AV platform.
I've run sentinel before, had a blast with my Templar sentinel for a good chunk of 1.7, so ill skill into it later if I don't now. I've committed to not spreading my suit SP around like I did before, though. I want 3-4 powerful suits not 6 iffy ones. Having only the one suit above advanced like I did before was a waste!

Edited the OP. If I go commando, I'm 100% sure I'll eventually skill back into sentinels since I do have a BPO after all, can't waste that!

I main amarr commando and I love it. I have 849 armor at proto with 323 shield...it's awesome

I got the amarr sentinel, but i'm not using it as my 'go to' fit. the scout is too fun.
I think the commando with the lr would be a long-range monster.

Sentinel ak.0 is the king of heavies right now. He eats up combat rifles. He eats up HMGs.
His only real weaknesses are hybrid rails and explosives. Everything else he laughs at. Sometimes even MDs aren't enough.
