I have maxed laser proficiency so I try a laser on an amarr assault suit and went 0 and 5. Tried several games with very poor results before saying ELM I choose you!! in the hopes of much better performance.
Results were a bit better 3 and 5.
Then I said Viziam! I choose you and tested for several games and results were mediocre??
Really? all these MONTHS waiting for a fix and the laser is still MEDIOCRE.
Then I got a militia Caldari Assault with an EXO and went 10 and 3, 11 and 4, 14 and 3, Not good results but much BETTER than the mediocre laser.
Really CCP you better have a magic super rabbit in a hat for Fanfest.
Sorry but it looks like its Infamous PS4 and other PS4 games in June.
P.S.: and a 20% reduction to squishy heavies health??? TERRIBLE "idea"

LOL I do way better than 0 and 5 in 1.7. Though I haven't been got to get on my Ps3, so I wouldn't know if the laser is better.

Amarr assault heat bonuses are currently bugged, and the further improved heat cost reductions on adv and pro didn't happen - they're currently the same as basic...
Aside from that the redone range is amazing - half dmg at 2m and prettymuch full dmg out to 110. |

So far I went 20-0 in a match with the viziam laser. Im using the Commando ak.0 which gives me 10% damage increase with the laser. |

I'm a beast at this game but when I'm up against a "known corporation" that wipes the floor with my team, I can't help but go negative and do poorly.
I don't really feel like trying it but I might just to see how much truth there is in your argument.

It comes down to if you run proto and the other guy runs proto then the deciding factor is typically who can apply more DPS.
If its a bunch of randoms on the otherside then in most cases they will only be running advanced , basic or militia.
When running a laser its choose your battles to be 1 versus 1 then it comes down to the weapons in most cases.
In other words squaded up versus another squad and running laser...meh! results. Squadded up versus the same squad in another battle and running EXO , shotgun or remotes and my skillzzz by magic improved??
Nothing to do with the laser?

I remember when in 1.6 I said the laser was going to be useless but got told to get gud by many folks. But 1.7 hit and I was right the laser was dead.
In 1.8 the laser got a range buff but its still underpowered.
You can take a 3 million sp alt and do ok with rail rifles, combat rifles, scrambler rifles, shotguns but try it with a laser and its mediocre.
Eh June or July will sort the problem with a PS4 console migration.

For me the litmus test for LR viability is if it can reliably beat the RR at some range. It has a TON of major drawbacks, which are all fine and part of what gives it it's own "personality." It needs to have a range where it dominates all other weapons to compensate though. The RR has very few drawbacks and is the main competitor to the LR's niche. The current range buff may not be enough (the effective might need an extra 10-20m). With the bugs to heat buildup with Amarr Assault, and the bug where heat isn't changing based on weapon tier, I haven't been able to really tell whether it still needs love.
Have any of you had experience with 1v1 against a RR? Were you able to find a range that was effective against them?

1 v1 was disapointing. The way to make the laser work is you need a heavy on your squad to act as bait so that the laser user can kill the rail rifle user.
The problem with this is why bother when its better to have two rail riflers shooting at the enemy.
The laser still needs an extra 10m to 20m extra range.

I'm not convinced, I got killed by a Am-Commando earlier today using basic LR in a basic suit, while I was a Gal-Commando pretty quickly.
I honestly thought he would overheat before he could kill me since I had more than 550 armor, I also thought I could make it to cover before he would overheat.
I'm not too sure how much better the LR is but since I haven't given it a spin yet, but I'm pretty sure it's not as bad as you say it is.

Using a ranged laser to toast a slow moving suit is doable. The problem is trying to toast a faster moving medium or light suit that also has a ranged weapon like a rail rifle.
My options are to just wait until I spot some slow moving suits in the hopes of some laser kills or to just say meh!! and run shotgun for much better results.

Now I don't use a LR at all but I have been seeing them in the feeds (And all over my face ) more often now, that being said I get wrecked by lasers if the user should encounter me at range. I run Proto scouts mainly (Dedicated scout for months now) but I do have both Adv medium frames and Commandos and if I am in either suit I seldom make it out alive. So they don't seem underpowered to me
The only time I'll kill a LR user in a 1v1 is if I engage him in at around 50m... |

I understand your point then, you're saying it just doesn't compare to other, more flexible options, in that case I agree with you, it's the only weapon that demands time and skill to kill a target yet offers little compared to it's competition.
I think the recent changes were a step in the right direction, but I agree with you that it still needs a bit more. |

No bait or other shenanigans, it should simply be the best weapon available for that range. If its not the case, then it needs more range (and a proportional increase in scope zoom) until this becomes true.
Sadly we won't know this for sure until the hotfix, by which time it would be too late to add more range (should balancing require it).

You mean when a laser user scores a lucky hit to either your back or your side when you are distracted.
I am talking about going 1 v1 when folks are NOT distracted gets diffrent results.
The options being run a rail rifle or wait until they are distracted or say meh!! and run cloak plus shotgun for better results.

I ran the laser yesterday and went 14/9/1 using the ELM-7 with 2 enhanced dmg mods, an ION pistol, all on an adv scout suit. I was even beating RR users, as well as snipers and other laser rifle users. I've got proficiency 3 in it currently. If you look at the stats the weapon dmg has increased per tier now. Don't burst fire it either since that resets its dmg back, just hold the trigger until you get close to overheating. |

The sensitivity and aim-assist are the biggest problems I've come across.
The ADS has the sensitivity of 1.7, despite having been given much greater zoom. So your aim just swings wildly about.
Meanwhile the RR's aim-assist works at range but the Laser's doesn't. I find myself having to strafe aim even at 0 sensitivity.

oh well either its fixed sooner or later or the PS4 migration will fix the problem .

This pretty much describes success with the LR. I actually feel like the laser got worse. Still out ranged by Rail Rifle. Did the Laser Rifle changes get implemented? Because if they did, they must of increased base damage and reduced damage build up at the same time. Or, they never changed it at all.

now it feels like the base damage was increased but the RAMPUP damage is much lower
looks like better laser range was traded for lower total damage delivered.
laser feels worse than it was in 1.7.........sigh.

And while I'm pretty sure I am taking facts out of my **** like dollar bills, you'll probably die from a laser less often as you would from Nova Knife stealth users and SMG proto scouts in cloaks. Yes a laser gun exists in the game but it doesn't mean it's "useful" to use. It's like asking which would you use: basic, logistic or assault suit? Most players would do either basic or logi. There's obvious interest now in the Caldari and Min Assaults but it's still really between one or the other once skill points are accounted for. |

So a big part of the problem with the laser is that it is only viable on one suit, same with the scrambler rifle.
Sure they can be decent weapons, on one suit. The only way these weapons even come close to competing is on one suit.
The only way you can justify the ridiculously high fittings requirements is if you use one suit.
Yep, great weapons if you use one suit.
(no the amarr commando is not very good, trust me. It overheats like crazy)
While there is no better place to be wealthy than the Gallente Federation, there is no hell worse for the poor either.

My first game yesterday was on an alt I had trained into lasers, went out with level 5 in amarr assault (adv suit) with an ELM and got roflstomped. Later in a squad on my main, using a templar laser with next to no skills in it, I did pretty decent with it. Mostly assists, but a few kills too. Blew the shields right off people like a puff of steam. |

The laser has faster ramp up damage than before, it used to be 0.8 extra per shot but it's now 0.91, 0.94 and 1.04 for std adv and proto. Not to mention base damage is higher too on adv and proto.
tldr; the laser is much stronger than before, about 20% for standard laser compared to 1.7. The optimal ranges, well just check my signature :) it's insane but shhhhh.

I got plenty of kills around 30+ after 3 matches
I think your problem is your ADS sensitivity, I had to drop mine almost to zero (made a huge difference)

Laser is good..
It's just spent to much time away from being viable in DUST.
We have new sockets, maps and even modes where it never really played a competitive role.
People are just starting to try it out and figure out how to use it and what kind of positional advancements they can make on the battlefield with it.
I can see it becoming viable in the coming weeks.
It always did take a player that liked a certain playstyle to make it truly shine... Even in the Hayday's. CSR, Espeon.. etc. |

There is a cap on damage though right? The SKE has an attribute labeled "m_BeamInfo.m_fMaxBeamDamage" that is set to 450 on all versions of the LR. So how does that fit into the formula?

Buddy you just suck with the laser lol, been melting people's faces off all day today. I wouldn't be surprised to see you indoors trying to spam the laser at less than 20m lol. It's a gun all about patience and strategy not this run and gun crap. Choose your position carefully and stay behind friendly blueberries and squadmates to use them as cover and interference. Laser isn't the kind of gun where you can just pick it up and automatically be good at it if you want that then use one of the other racial rifles.

it has always been and will always be my number 1 light rifle no matter what becomes of it
