I've been experimenting with protofits.com so...
Scout C-1: 2 Basic Shield Extenders 1 Complex Shield Extender 1 Enhanced Armor Plate RS-90 Combat Rifle Magsec SMG C-7 Flux Grenades 2 Compact Nanohives
Estimated ISK cost: 26,490
^This is more of an ambush/quick assault disposable scout fit.
Scout C/1: 1 Basic Shield Extender 2 Complex Shield Extenders 1 Basic Armor Plate 1 Enhanced Profile Dampener SB-39 Rail RIfle Magsec SMG C-7 Flux Grenades Basic Cloak Field
Estimated ISK cost: 35,685
^This is primarily an upgrade, and more of a ranged scout for point defense.
Are they good?

Hmm, Cal Scout:
Adv should be: 2 complex extenders and one complex precision enhancer Or 1 complex extender and 2 complex precision enhancer
Proto should be: 2 complex extender and 2 complex precision enhancer Or 1 complex and 3 complex precision enhancer
On lows:
Stealth scout: 2 complex Dampener On speed: 1 complex Dampener and 1 kin cat (adv one works) Tank: 2 armor mods whichever you feel like
As a Cal scout you should be using a scanner + cloak. You wont have the CPU/PG to fit anything at advanced but a standard cloak. Rail rifle is PG heavy compared to what most scouts will use, the CR. You wont have room for a magsec most likely and i wouldn't waste my SP on one either. And you wont need one either, the RR is sufficient. Save asap to max dampening, cal scout suit, biotics, range amp and range precision.
Running an advanced suit will cost you 32-34k, meaning you can die 6 times in a match and still make ISK. You want to best utilize you're racial skill so levelling cal scout to level 5 will greatly help scanning and closer cloak cost. |

The only thing that bothers me about your fitting is the magsec on top of the rail rifle.
If you went ar / msmg then you'd have the same range and damage profile covered. But considering that the magsec fitting wise is very close to the service rifles, and that their damage profiles are the same, then I am going to question the the utility of the combination being worth the cpu/pg investment. At first glace I'd think it was an ammo saver but you have two hives, so ammo isn't a problem, as that is usually enough to keep you going for a single life. Its also not the best for switching to match their range on the fly either (especially for surprised cqc) as the pre fire delay after a switch does get you close to .5-1.0 second delays which can be costly.
Essentially, I am having difficulty seeing why you are running the RR with the MSMG. It could be RP but I see flux grenades which I understand is your shield stripper, but with only two (and how much they chew threw hives) its definitely not going to be reliable.

Look, i understand you use your eyes but you can't see through walls.
You're a fragile scout, seeing someone before they use their eyes to see you means you have an advantage. 1. Pre fire 2. Use cloak 3. Place RE 4. Escape potential situations where you see multiple enemies coming.
The idea of a Cal Scout is to see whats coming and either avoid it or deal with it. So scan precision and radius are key.
You won't see stealth scouts but you will be the same eHP so they won't have an advantage. If you run one complex damp you'll be able to stay off any non Cal scan yourself.
You need to maximize your racial bonus to succeed. The cal scout provides a chance for you to have the jump on anyone, in addition to the cloak which furthers this advantage. |

I do not recommend running a Proto suit, i personally don't run them ever, but that doesn't mean the value from the racial bonus won't help you.
From level 3 to 5 - there's a major advance in bonus from class and race.
You asked, I gave you my opinion.
I feel that once you have dampeners to 5, the very least you can do is get precision to 5 and range to 3. It will only help your gameplay when you can see whats coming, it will also let you flank and pick off single targets. .

Really?
Stack 2 complex extenders + 4 armor plates.. I'm sure you've seen it on profits. Not saying this is how a scout should be played, but you can easily treat a Gal Scout like an Amarr scout and run a light infantry fitting.
The idea isn't to have suit and run it the same way. It's about adaptability, this is why the Amarr scout is so appealing to many. It can play stealth, tank, and a mixture. Sure armor tanking isnt great but at 900 eHP, whose to argue that it works. |

I think we are missing the point.
Scanning allows you to see the enemy before they see you, this is an advantage two ways:
1. Fight! You're prepared and can set a trap or get a jump on him because you're fragile and need to. 2. Fright! You can see multiple enemies and escape because this is not advantageous
Not being able to see a Gal Scout is fine, they are roughly the same eHP as you and therefore their only advantage would be to get the drop on you. The idea of scanning and seeing what is around the corner is so you don't get into a gun battle with someone who is at higher eHP and therefore will kill you before you kill them.
Frankly, if you are flanking their lines and enemy a Gal Scouts are flanking yours you shouldn't run into each other very often. When you do, you both will be facing one another and neither should have an stealth advantage. So worrying about 1-2 players a match, players who you will rarely see and wont have an advantage on you is just no worth it. Instead you should focus on the other players, or Amarr and Min Scouts who will have greater eHP than you but unless using 2 dampeners are not hidden from view.
RE's will be your friend, although it is difficult to equip them on most adv suits that aren't a Logi.
Running a Cal Adv Scout is going to be enjoyable once you get the necessary core skills to maximize your racial bonus. I look forward to making my scout better. I was going to go Min Scout but i am too worried about NK and wasting SP into a weapon that might change later. Unless CCP says they will refund SP to NK when new ones are released I am gonna stay away from a Cal NK weapon on a Min Scout Suit.

So either 2 complex extenders and 1 complex precision or the reverse. Either 2 complex dampeners or one Dampener and one kin cat. The equipment should be a std cloak, the run should be CR. There's 0 reason to get a secondary, save the room to get a compact hive or RE. Simply, effective, and 2 builds offers you some flexibility.
Flux nades, you can do with out if you want to use RE. There's no need for a secondary, especially putting new SP into one when you don't have a cloak at optimal CPU/PG because, you only grabbed level 3 scout and not lv5 cal scout.

If you are planning on going Cal Scout I recommend precision enhancers...especially if you are not going to use proto very often, if at all.
Why? They take advantage of the Caldari bonus. They can detect cloaked scouts, minus the Gal, if they are running only 1 damp (only takes 2 enhancers .) Plus enhancers are extremely cheap and much more fitting friendly than extenders.
You also can run range extenders in the lows for the same reasons...extremely cheap. |

You can do that. But if you are planning on using basic or adv extenders..why bother? They are expensive and offer very little hp value.
If you use scanning mods you get more bang out of the mod. You can easily run adv mods on a basic suit or pro mods on an adv suit. Cheap, effective, and fitting friendly. Sure you won't be as good in a fight but they offer their own advantages.

If you put an armor plate on a cal suit next build you are doing something wrong If you've ever came across a Scrambler Rifle, you'd know why I put a basic armor plate. For the rest who are telling me to stack more than 3 complex mods...ARE YOU GUYS INSANE??? I only have my cpu and pg levels to 3 And I doubt I would have trouble killing other scouts, my eyes are pretty good compared to most half blind mercs, so I think I'm okay. As for the LOLcloaks, if I see them cloak, I can kill them easily, but I agree if they are camping (not moving at all), then I might have trouble.
