GET YOUR PASSIVE SKILLS TO 5
seriously do it, get your CPU and PG maxed, your armor and your shields.
get your 5%stam/regen/sprint speed
get your 25%!!!!!!!!!!!!! hacking bonus
get your passive scanning so heavys will no longer sneak up on you (their one true weakness is that if you max your passive scans you will see them coming a mile away)
get all those skills that improve every dropsuit you will ever use. and just make everything about your suits better.
THEN if you have enough left over, get a proto suit. |

But I have those maxed out.
The only skills I don't have points in are the shield modules ones and that's cause I don't really use extenders, energizer or regulators. They maybe have 1-3 for them.

FWIW, after 1.8 drops, I expect I'll have every core upgrade skill maxed out (except the useless melee modules) -- including all equipment.
The major questions in my mind are (a) what suit(s) will I choose, (b) will I add one of the new sidearms, and (c) how many points will be spent on tanks/dropships to add another role to my main character. |

My recommendation is get your engineering and electrical both to 5 first, if you haven't already. Each one maxed is just over 1.5 mil sp total I believe.
Then make sure you have your armor and shields maxed.
With TTK coming back to earth, I standard suit will be viable in the face of a CR or RR, at least long enough to find some cover.
With your fitting skills maxed and your passive armor/shield bonus maxed, you can squeeze 550-600 eHp on a standard suit or bpo and play some games to see what suit you want to specialize in before sinking the 2.5 mil into the racial proto.
I know quite a few guys with these skills at 3 yet run proto suits and weapons. Don't say we didn't tell you!

Truly... Only chase after improving mod stats on mods you actually use. Mistakes I have made thinking they had some passive benefit.

hacking makes it so you get shoot in the back while hacking alot less.
and the core scanning skills make it so your not so surprized that there was some guy camping that corner you were about the run around :P
both prevent unnessesary deaths :P and by extension save isk.
GET THEM FOLKS even if you dont plan on using the mods associated with em they make every suit you run better. |

While I agree that people need to max out their passives, I would consider Hacking an ancillary skill, its very handy and I'm finally gonna have it done, but at a x5 skill, there are many more pressing matters for people under 20mil SP.
As someone that'll have 40mil after we get the TMCC points, I wish I had the skill for awhile, and come 1.8, I shall have it to work with my new suits.

Yeah, I'm spending my MCC event SP on going from 4-5 on engineering and electronics. That 770K SP is so hard to wait to save up for, I always end up impulsively spending it on a weapon or something instead! (I have like 6 proto weapons but only 1 proto suit, lol)

Melee is a way of life. Your ignorance of the great Myrofibril Stimulant is saddening.
Those "useless" mods can augment your melee damage something fierce.

Again, don't get me wrong, it is important, there's a reason I have my friend have his Proto Min Logi decked out with Complex Codebreakers. The number of games we've won because he successfully hacked/rehacked the entire map can't be undersold. But, I'd suggest having some weapon skill before getting it to 5. 3 would work 'til you have some other skills up.
