As a Tanker and AV man, the Overview map is a crucial tool for me as red tanks and dropships are large enough that they render on the map without their tags popping up. so i can find them anywhere that has an open top and isnt in the red zone.

Unfortunately the map isn't marked and labeled well for communicating things.
Perhaps we should pester CPM to pester CCP about doing something about that.

This game is full of wannabe's.
The PC and SL should fit into the Sidearm slot so it's accessible and practical to carry one.

Map takes too long to load for this to be useful most of the time.
Map takes too long to quit for this to be useful most of the time.
Map lags too much behind the game for this to be useful most of the time. For me at least, the information shown in the map is not synchronized with was really is happening.
All 3 of those things make using the map pretty useless for me. I only look at it when I'm dead and waiting to respawn, or when I want to locate a tank.

Does team chat even work? I haven't used it since pre 1.7 got a fatal error pretty much every time I switched to it and when I didn't get a fatal error I got no sound. Haven't dared to use it in ages to see if its fixed.
Also bringing up the map mid fight is a pain it takes far too long.

If there was a VITA app available I would use the map more, I am still VERY disappointed with how the VITA app is being handled. I try no to complain much but they showed a working app, asked for suggestions and gave a date to announce what was going to happen and nothing. That was like a year ago. They should at least said **** off, but you know me I am a fanboy so CCP can't do wrong.
I do use the map in game sometimes but more often than not it is a fat fingered button press when I am trying to PTT. I am almost always on coms but I don't talk often. If the the squad I am in is using coms -for actual teamwork- then I will talk more but for the most part I am fairly silent. Which is kind of odd to me because I am a talker and very outspoken. The map is helpful and I am glad we have it.

Used to do it pretty hardcore back in Beta (as well as a few PC matches with ANONYMOUS) but until we get better functionality for the role it's sort of a difficult thing to muster.

Maybe if team chat worked well.
Maybe if we had that Vita app to use to keep the map up.
Maybe if we had commander mode.

The only time I stop is when the game warns me that it'd about to kick me. It's my preferable method of placing orders. Oh, and you should be able to see players names when you hover the cursor on their dot, so I can talk which if my allies are where

I use the tactical map quite a bit and and find it invaluable. I do make full use of the zoom functions and the limited ability to give squad orders and have some recommendations to improve the system, more on this in a moment.
With a little bit of practice the tactical map is a powerful enabler to the GC; this is the most basic and functional tool the tactical commander has to visualize the battlefield in the macro and direct actions for his unit. You can zoom in on most maps pretty far down to give you a chance of picking out locations of individual enemies which can be vary useful for locating HAVs, drop uplinks, and the occasional sniper or forge gunner.
The tactical map is also an excellent tool for seeing how coherent your squads are in combat, directing interdiction points or points of dominance, and gaining a better since of how you can counter the opposing team based on your relative positions and maneuverability on the given terrain.
Some recommendations for increasing functionality of the tactical map: 1. Have easy to read N,S,W,E indicators on the mini-map and tactical map.
2. Put the alpha-numeric grid reference system on the tactical map similar to the one supplied in the map feedback section. This would greatly increase the ability to communicate critical info such as "Sniper vicinity B-3, John's team clear it".
3. The ability to activate more than one squad order at a time. I would advocate on to for the squad leader as well but it's key for the GC with multiple squads under his control.
4. Even the zoom function out on each map...subjectively it seems that sometimes you can zoom in further than others, this should be consistent.
5) The zoom parameters should be able to encompass the entire field of play and redlines at max zoom out. At max zoom in you should be able to pick up a very small image of an un-highlighted enemy, weapons fire, explosive bursts, and faint equipment blooms from uplinks and hives.
Lastly...if you are interested in a possible Commander Role Dropsuit and how that would fit in I can discuss that as well.
Thanks for bringing this up, IWS.

Lately I use the squad commands to gather info and help my squad.
For example, if I'm trying to figure out the best spot to drop an orbital...say on a pesky thale sniper...I'll ask where squad members believe him to be and from the overhead map I'll place rally points in the described spots to confirm before using the strike.
Also if I see a tank and we have ways to kill the tank I'll mark it with an attack order to keep its position up for a moment. It can be hard to properly describe a tanks location at times so a mark usually works better.
As far as team command, I only ever tried it in corporations and it was usually in a disciplined organized manner where everyone mutually understood the need to be quiet and follow orders. In public games not nearly enough people listen or show any kind of respect towards a random person trying to give a team direction. Of course it's unfair to expect anyone to listen to someone they've never met or heard from before.
It might be nice if there were a way to visually identify a decent leader in game. Like say a player meta level or something. Of course that could be bad if it could be manipulated in some way by the individual so I'd prefer something that was assigned through newer game features in an earned manner.
Like maybe a commander deploy where you can try to take lead of a battle, if you win you earn points in command that effect your player meta level. Of course it's not completely a thought out idea but there you go.
Anyways, I'm not sure what kind of info this thread is looking for.
I could say, yeah I was primary ground commander of the PFBHz open beta tournament team and I should be listened to but that's in the past and I can't be expected to represent myself like that. I could say I was elected ground commander of the multi corp effort to get a district for the corp Caitlin Stasey Doo and that wouldn't mean a thing. If I had a solid number to point to that I earned over time and perseverance then I might have room to be listened to. (This games history is full of silly)
People's memories are short and cruel. Also, most of the player base doesn't even care. |

When I am tactical tanking - for sure I check the overview map periodically to see where my next targets are.
Any chance we could get a PROPER commander mode / commander interface screen? Would be awesome! (I'm thinking something like DICE has done with Battlefield for the commander)
