As I've always understood it, the Commando's main role is second-line suppression. They're behind the front-line, perched on a hill or behind a low wall, just raining down constant significant damage on to any enemy in sight. Their 1.8 setup seems to be reinforcing this rather nicely; with two light weapons plus their reload speed bonus, 1.8 Commandos will spend very little time [i]not[/i ]shooting. And their damage bonus will ensure that a Commando's line of fire is definitely something you don't want to be standing in. Sounds like a good suppressive unit to me.
As for the Assault, well, honestly I'm not exactly sure what their intended role is necessarily supposed to be. I've seen many players attempt to explain it, but no real Dev confirmation on anything. If you're interested, here's my idea on how to give the Assault suits a more defined role.
If you don't feel like reading all of that, basically, I'd like to see them become adaptable shock troopers; able to quickly move around the battlefield, picking when and where their engagements are happening, and being able to effectively react to virtually any situation. In a nutshell, I'd do this by giving them the most Module slots of any suit, balancing the Assault's total slot count with the Logi's.

I do agree that Assault suits should have more module slots than Logi suits, because Logi suits are supposedly there for the equipment they can bring, but they can also fit more modules than Assault, which made them better slayers because of more damage mods and armor/rep/shields they could fit as well because of their higher cpu/pg.
Basic suits and Assault suits should both have more high/low slots than Logi, but assault should have some kind of role bonus to make it different. I wouldn't call Assault suits general troopers, I prefer the term 'adaptable shock trooper'. So they have flexibility both in battle and when making fits. The basic frames I see as (what should be) cheaper alternatives to the specialist suits, that lie somewhere in between the specialist suits they unlock. Here's Kagehoshi's ideas on how to alter the basic frames.
