I am a little confused about the upcoming changes for scanners coming in 1.8
First thing I get that you can no longer do the 360 scan thing. I can see that some feel this may be op but I was reading some post and it seems that the scan will only be a snap shot showing the location of the mercs at the time of the scan not real time marking of the mercs in the scan field. Is that true or does the person in the scan range stay marked for the duration of the scan? and then the squad can still see the reds turning and moving about in the scan location?
if the second guess is correct all is well for me but if the first condition is the new scan mode then I will agree that the use of a scanner will be minimal. |

I have actually wondered the same thing. Given the fact that the new equipment charts say that the enemy visibility time is still greater for quantum scanners, I would think that it would be the same function as it is now. Only without the 360 degree turns.
It's a trap! In this patch we can't repel firepower of that magnitude! - Admiral Ackbar would say in ambush w Nyain San

This. To the best of my knowledge they are using the term snapshot to say the scan is instant, ending 360 uber-scans. Tracking of scanned mercs should stay the same. |

Meh scanners never really bothered me as i have no way of avoiding them do to being a heavy. That being said though I enjoy being scanned as that usually means some poor sap is about to enter mah HMG thunderdome
Thanks CCP for making the HMG Heavy viable again :3
That's no excuse to slack off on releasing a heavy laser though =.=

Though with CCP making the scanning mechanic a 'snapshot' now, I guess they will do away with the scan interval time? So once you scan you will be able to put your scanner away immediately after instead of being vulnerable for the two or so seconds where you would usually spin.
That would actually kind of suck. Dampening and scouts are probably better off pre-1.8 since so many people use and depend on their scan results being accurate, despite the ease with which lights and many mediums can avoid scans. In 1.8, people will use scanners less frequently, have their gun out more, and will generally be more jumpy. This could make stealth play harder than it is with the current scan epidemic, as stealth players can easily avoid scans if they have a mind to. |

Stealth play will not be harder, don't forget we are also getting cloaks. Sure people will probably have better heads up play, but that's not a hit on stealth gameplay.
The changes are great, no more perma scans. This allows even suits with light dampening to enjoy the "fog of war."
Plus it will take real teamwork to be good at scanning. Now scanning will be a huge advantage and not achievable because one guy spins in a circle.

Scanning imparts a false sense of security, leading players to become sloppy. If the nerf hits as I expect, many will drop scanners and will train themselves to become more situationally aware, which will make stealth play harder.
Still, smart squads will find a way to get around the scan nerf. This will probably mean a dedicated Gal Logi using multiple scanners and hanging in the back. Or an LAV escort using vehicle scanners. |
