yeah and an Assault rifle can pick off targets at very long ranges, I don't think an SMG can do that in rl (aside from some) but this isn't real life so ignore that.
In most FPS the SMGs usually have slightly higher DPS or better hipfire abilities and speed multipliers. While ARs have way longer range. Also in Most FPS games an SMG is a main gun, except for older FPS games. Therefore no as long as an SMG is a sidearm it should not be equal to an AR, and definitely not as long as the long range to short range weapon balance is so... unexistant.

Why not? The do the same DPS, damage =/= DPS therefore higher damage =/= greater killing potential. Range is the same, dps is the same therefore if the SMG is to behave like the AR then the AR in the light weapon slot is obsolete. Don't tell me to use common sense when you so obviously lack it yourself.
