Both are valid points but consider the Minmatar Commando's boosts: +2% explosive damage from light weapons per level, and 25% reduction to reload speed. Add in proficiency and it has more anti armour potential than it currently has. At least it's more viable than the never used plasma cannon

Oh, I've seen the PLC used. Just not for vehicles but infantry for ***** and giggles ;)

The reload time is something, but bare in mind that A: you're doing a flat -20 percent against shields and can't benefit from proficiency against it. And B: That in 1.7 with 3Dmg mods, you still struggle with proto swarms against even basic tanks and you might as well not try against seasoned ads pilots most of the time. With the complex mods of now. That afforded you up to 15 percent from proficiency and around 23 ish percent With the mods.
Overall you still lose out due to the loss of the complex mods giving 10 but the reload may be relevant.
Overall I'd wait till after 1.8 drops and ask proto swarmers how they feel now, before investing any sp, but I believe the general consensus is that swarms are likely receiving an indirect nerf due to the changes in proficiency and the changes to damage mods, but the only real way we'll know is through trail and error.
So with that, wait and see. Who knows. Maybe that reload time will make the difference :) |

Well swarms are not nearly as strong as they were. At the same time, I'm assault/logi class. So I don't have the liberty of the forge gun. So when tanks get rampant, I just can't sit there and try to avoid them. I switch to my swarms and have at it. Sometimes I go up against guys who know how to fit their tanks properly and they just laugh at me. Then plenty others, they run like hell.
I think I was playing with Molon Labe in a pub one time and those guys had the ground covered. Me and another merc chased or destroyed tanks that came into the city. So in some matches, they do have their place. I can't rule them out entirely

Sorry to bump a dead thread, but how well does a minmatar commando with dual swarms do in general?

Using Proto Swarms and a PLC (admittedly on two different suits, swapped out at the Depot I was using for cover) I've been able to solo Somas and Sicas.
Swarms against Drop Ships, in my experience, can be a deterrent even if run solo but require at least 3 firing simultaneously to bring down Assault Drop Ships before they move out of range.

Pretty much this.
As proto minmatar commando with prof 3 in swarms I can deal with Sicas and Somas but that's just about it. You have no business going solo against Assault Dropships or mad Madrugars.
Yesterday we had 2 proto swarmers dealing with a Madrugar who always got away in a nick of time. Frustrating. Got it in the end though, but with well placed proximity mines.
I can't help but think swarms need some love from CCP. At the very least fix the dropship bug Judge Rhadamanthus has pointed out.

I thought you were just supposed to harass drop ships with swarms - that's why they give you some WP just for getting past it's shields. Because generally that (and making it run away) is as good as you get. |

You can't even do that against (hardened) assault derpships. They're back the same instant you switch your attention to something else or run out of ammo.

My proto swarms do chase away DS. However, it almost never kills them. I get them down to next to nothing but they run away on fire, heal and are back in no time. I don't mind tho, so long as that DS is focusing on me, my team can do what they need to and more often than not, a forger will pop up and help me take it down eventually.
For tanks, I'm much more effective. I'm skilling into commando just so I can get the other light weapon to defend myself. I often make tanks run like crazy but get taken down by random infantry around. However, the sacrifice of getting that last lockon swarm before dying is oh so satisfying.
I will say, however, the most success I've ever had taking down HAVs and even LAVs is proxies. In the past 2 weeks alone I've fried at least 6 tanks and 2 lavs with just proxies. They are worth their weight in gold.

The one thing I hate about Drop Ships isn't that they almost always get away, it's that if/when you do actually take one down, the entire crew has ample time to bail out before it explodes. So a fully packed Drop Ship should be worth 7 kills + the Drop Ship itself, but hose 7 will all bail and survive. HAVs and LAVs don't have this, so why do Drop Ships?

Swarm Launchers are without a doubt a viable option. You just need to keep several things in mind:
-You are on AV duty. Everything else is secondary. -You are best friends with your teams vehicle operators, especially tankers. -You WILL run out of ammo.
I run a Gallente MLT Suit with a CBR7 (ADV Lvl) and a K-2 (ADV Lvl) Nanohive. SMG and Flux nades for anti-personnel suppression. Total Fitting is about 14k-16k ISK, depending on Mods. If the opposing team steadily supplies vehicles, I have a pretty steady amount of WP flowing in. Usually, under prime conditions, AV situations run like this for me:
-MLT/STD LAV: 1 Flux + 1~2 Swarms OR 3~5 Swarms -MLT HAV: 1-2 Flux + 4~9 Swarms OR 7~12+ Swarms -STD HAV: Find a vehicle operator or AV partners. -MLT/STD DS: 1-2 Flux + 2~4 Swarms OR 5~9 Swarms -ADS: Find a Rail Tanker or Forge Gunner to partner with. -Turrets: 4-5 Swarms (depending on reload)
With vehicle damage (75wp each) + the vehicle destruction (40-150wp) + the driver/pilot and passenger kills (50wp each), you will usually net about 240wp minimum per vehicle + its operator.
On average, you'll get about 75wp per 2-3 Swarms. In a squad, a SL specialist could steadily supply WP, but that depends on the other teams supply of vehicular support and one's own ammo reserves |

Don't expect to solo anything with proto swarms, not even unfit militia vehicles. That being said if you sync shots with a mate you might kill a militia if you surprise him or if he is a **** player.

Although when you manage to solo a HAV, it's all the more satisfying.

Well, I don't think this would be a problem if you got points for all of the ones who don't reach the ground alive. Nearly everyone in every damage induced crash I've ever seen has died. Most of the time, you would still get 5-3 kills per ship (assuming it's not just the pilot on-board to begin with). |

Every time I take down a Drop Ship, either on this character or my alt, the crew manage to bail and I only get the 75WP for the Drop ship itself.

It does very well
My AV fit is a min commando with lvl 4 swarms and a BK-42 combat rifle, the suit gives a damage bonus to both. You wont destroy every vehicle with this, but if you position yourself well and keep harassing them then the ones that survive will be pushed back till they're no longer relevant.
Getting kills is fun, but you don't have to destroy the vehicle to make a difference. |

learn how to use swarms then i have taken out plenty of tanks and i do ahve to say when going 1v1 A/V vs. tanker nothing pisses me orr more than a tanker that jumps out last second to save their sorry skin because they would have lost to a A/V player especaily blaster tank pilots. i run proto min commando dual swarms and rep tool so i can keep people alive an provide A/V cover, yes i am really squishy but as long as you can protect your troops from tanks and derpships they should be able to protect you from ground troops
