Remember how happy the community was when the stats for the new suits came out?
"Woohoo! Scouts get an extra equipment slot."
"Commando's gonna be beast!"
"Dat Caldari Sentinel!"
Granted, there was some furor just before we saw the actual stats, when there was talks of removing the sidearm for scouts, but the community spoke out against it. CCP listened and people were grateful.
That's all gone now.
First, it was the absurd levels of secrecy regarding the release date of 1.8. The year started with some awkward holidays so I'm not totally unsympathetic towards CCP for pushing 1.8 back a bit. I am however most unsympathetic towards the way CCP has handled any mentions of an actual release date. If I hadn't known better, I would have thought that 1.8 contained sensitive details about Putins invasion of Crimea. "March" was all we got, not late March or mid-late March just "March". They narrowed it down to which 8,33% of the year would contain 1.8. If pregnancies can be narrowed down to the specific date, why can't a patch?
Next came the news that TTK was going up, but practically nothing was done to de-shitify the AR. The rail rifle is still going to reign supreme, followed by the combat rifle or (if in skilled hands) the scrambler. Although this is based solely on numbers and not on actual gameplay so who knows; maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. I doubt it though.
Now, it's the DS command respec/refund (depending on who you talk to). The people who wanted a respec (including me) are disappointed because it was the absolute least amount of respec we could have gotten, and the people who didn't want a respec are disappointed (I assume) because there is going to be a respec. Probably less so than the pro-respec group but disappointed nonetheless.
What can CCP do to make the community happy again, or at least happier? For me, the answer is simple:
OPEN UP THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS!
Why is there such secrecy about the release dates of patches? Why aren't patch notes, or at least preliminary patch notes released more than one week in advance? Is it because of Q&A, or Sony or something else?
To quote the latest dev blog:
"After lengthy discussions with the CPM and large amounts of community feedback, the decision has been made to refund all skill points currently spent in the Dropsuit Command tree to playersGÇÖ unallocated SP pools. So, if your preferred racial frame didnGÇÖt previously exist, youGÇÖll be able to switch to one of the newly available suit frames without penalty."
Fair enough, but what arguments were taken into consideration to decide against respeccing DS upgrades and weaponry? Was it to prevent FOTM-bandwagon jumping, or to promote the use of boosters, or was it to keep some semblance of choices mattering or was it something else?
If the reasoning behind why certain decisions are made public, the atmosphere on the forums would not be as hostile as it is now.

Yes, but the rest of us would know and wouldn't have to resort to QQ'ing to let our frustrations be known. |
