I turned off my Aim Assist for about 15 matches. I discovered some very unexplainable things and it's worse than I thought.
First, I should state that DUST 514 is the first FPS I used AA on. I played it with KB/M when I first started, but my USB port broke, so I have to use a controller now. I've just always had AA on since 1.4. My internet speed is 0.8d/0.45u. I do not have an after market hard drive. I used an SCR and RR.
So, when I turned it off, I did extremely poor in pub matches(also because I was picking very select gunfights and situations to test my sight with). However, I would be shooting at people who were hacking an objective, standing still, from 10m away with my sight red over them, and I apparently was missing. Shots went everywhere except into the target. There was almost no hit detection what-so-ever. Anything beyond 30-35m was just plain impossible to hit. My shots would ghost right through players, even ones that were standing still.
It seems AA is also linked to hit detection. Its basically the game landing the shots for you. All aim is meaningless.
Another observation was ALL hitmarkers disappeared. I had no clue if I was landing shots or not. They'd either drop dead eventually, or a +25 Assist would pop up. I only knew if I was landing shots if I was close enough to see the impact of the shots fired.
My RR wasn't able to hit anything, because the kick and dispersion of the weapon was far to great. Shots that were dead-to-rights on target simply didn't hit and anything coming out of my muzzle. I'm rather sure that's how the game intended the weapon to work.
Lastly, something very strange, but my guns would fire noticeably faster without AA turned on. The response from pulling the trigger to the gun firing was substantial enough for me to notice and something I had to try and adapt to.
When I turned it back on, the same shots would register. My sight never pulled to an opponent (it never has done that, but that could be my slow internet and non-use of an after-market hard drive).
So, it is my conclusion that Aim Assist may be the wrong term for whatever mechanics are at work here. I believe the aim assist is nothing more than a mere bridge between players for shot registration. This is why fully-automatic weapons have reign supreme in this game, and blatant DPS is the dominate factor in this game. Spamming as much fire power in the general direction of an opponent, and allowing the game to decide whether or not you bullets hit or not, is how this game seems to be played at the offensive level.
This is no different than every other shooter made since 1995. However, the original scope of the gunplay in this game (or my understanding of it from dev blogs, etc) was that it was a slower paced tactical shooter. Fire, move up, fire, push up, etc. Working as a unit from landmark to landmark. What this game turned into was a total free-for-all of people jumping in mosh pits and spraying there weapons at one another, very much like a twitch shooter. Using uplinks to continually have direct access to the chaos. A very short TTK evolved. Thus, CCP attempting to slow down things in 1.8 and bringing back sound tactics. This however will fail is the absent hit detection problem isn't solved.

I've never used aim assist, and I always do perfectly fine.
If you consider that I rarely use anything above standard, I'm doing ******* awesome for not using aim assist.

Yea, I've still never ran with AA... I really feel like I'm missing out on something when these threads pop up.. But then I realize I give not even a single sh*t.

I would really love to see a comprehensive video on this matter to show the differences between the two. It's one thing to read about it but to see it unfold is different. I could imagine about the RR. Once she starts spitting, she gets wild.

I'm rather sure it works better on some guns, and worse on others.

If anything, low-ROF weapons would have it the worst, but my shotgunning and sniping is fine.

Shotguns don't need AA, they belt out one mass of damage. You're so close that you probably can't miss with them.
Snipers aren't real snipers. They have zero projectile travel time.
However, as afar as hit detection, those two guns have the worst in this game in my opinion.

It's always been my belief that CCP never fixed the poor aiming DUST had at the launch of 1.0 - they tweaked some parameters but eventually AA was slapped over top and that was that. Likewise, the hit detection changed abruptly with the introduction of AA.
To date, CCP has not learned that poor mechanics will hobble the game with their target audience. They are certainly aware of the reviews of DUST's core FPS mechanics and what a large part of the playerbase thinks about it(a significant part of which have left the game).
But the sad reality for CCP is that this game isn't going anywhere until core mechanics work, work well, and the game is a pleasure to handle. And all the content in the world and truckloads full of marketingspeak are not going to change that.
As we stand, there is no positive evidence or even cause for plausible inference of any change of attitude that can be discerned from CCP's actions.
I support SP rollover.

They probably laugh asking themselves how a bunch of morons are still playing this wrecked game...or they are really sweating hard cause they hqve no clue how to fix anything core, or sinc chinese people hacked the game with no experience provided qith the result we have they have invested cash into firing current employes to rebuild the game... All of the above may be also false...its like the xfiles....

I keep AA off exactly for this reason. I know I'm not the best shot and I don't need to make myself worse by sticking to AA. When I do mess with it, I realize how much I get dragged to a shot. It's funny really, I still prefer without AA because I have less limits and what not but to compete with my own bad aim I feel like it's better to have it on in Public matches.

played a couple games with AA off the other day.
Even using the ScR and LR, which require a precise shot placement/steady aim, I was doing well in ranged fights but up close with ScR it was really messy. Nothing that some practice wouldnt fix but in a world of 1000 hp logis and lolRRs.. I rather not put myself at such disadvantage right now. |

This is the same type of discovery that can be made during a Blue on Blue duel.
AA is way too strong and determines outcomes way too much.
The rifle nerfs are nice, but as long as hitscan weapons act like dropsuit-seeking lasers, there's going to be a balance problem. |

Did the same test back in 1.5 (or 1.6) and I did just fine.

snip True or not that has got to be the scariest things I have read on these forums since the Uprising 1.7 patch-notes.
Before we know it bullet-magnetism will be linked to aim-assist and the next sound we'll hear is bunch of people throwing their keyboards out the window.
Here, have some candy and a Like. :-)

I dont get how people can go 70/4 in a pub match without aim assist. The hit detection is so fking broken.
Conclusion: Everyone use aim assist, no one admit doing so.

People make it sound like autoaim. You give it way too much credit. Aim assist just slightly follow the target if it hits your crosshairs. And if they move faster than the tracking, it stops working. You have to do some tracking yourself. I think its a nuisance, but it does help when using the laser rifle. |

When they brought in this new AA and messed with the mouse my ability to shoot absolutely tanked, once I bought a 3rd party mouse emulator and got aim assist my scores doubled overnight, its not the "aim assist" that makes the difference its the bullet magnetism, someone with the ability to make videos should show just how much of a difference there is between AA on/off and how damage is detected. |
