The real problem is that there isn't really any "academy" at all. Throwing 32 people who have never played the game before into matches with each other isn't an "academy," it's a cluster****.
The "academy" should be a series of actual new player training exercises that actually teaches players how the game works.
Drop Uplinks 101
Player spawns alone in a domination map
Cortana Voice: "Drop Uplinks are used to give a squad a reliable spawn point. Reach Objective A and place a Drop Uplink within the highlighted area."
Player reaches highlighted area and drops the uplink
Cortana Voice: "Good. For training purposes your clone will now be terminated, please respawn on the newly placed uplink to complete training exercise"
System forces a Suicide.
Player respawns on uplink.
Cortana Voice: "Good. As you can see, Drop Uplinks save time when spawning, and allow you to choose a tactical position to spawn when your clone is killed in action. It is advised that you take care in your placement of Drop Uplinks and protect them at all costs. A good Drop Uplink placement can mean the difference between winning and losing."
END SCENARIO
Squads 101
Starts as a tutorial video showing the neocom interface.
Cortana Voice: "To be effective in New Eden, it is important not just to find your own niche, but to also work with others who's skills compliment your own."
video shows squad finder being pulled up
Cortana Voice: "The easiest way to find other players to work with is through the Squad Finder Tool. This tool lists all squads currently looking to fill out their squad"
Video shows choosing a squad from list and joining, then jump cuts to "in game" footage of 6 varying disciplined characters (a couple heavies, a scout, a logi, a couple assualts) all standing together. If they wanted to get fancy they could do a cut scene with some fancy shots of the different roles working together, a logi repping a heavy, a heavy with a forge taking out a dropship, a scout running out ahead with a scanner, an assault guy clearing corners, etc.
Cortana Voice: "Alone, a single mercenary's options are limited, but in a squad a group's strengths can be leveraged and their weaknesses minimized. New Eden is a harsh place, and you will not survive long on your own"
END SCENARIO
Basically, there needs to be a "101" for each piece of the game. Players shouldn't be required to do them, but the screen that lists all of them should come up at the beginning of every play session until they are out of academy, and there should be a clear SP and ISK bonus for completing them all. |
