Yes. Were you here when massholes were running rampant? You couldn't hardly move anywhere. There were masshole squads everywhere. So not only will you have to still worry about tanks (oh god, they only have to worry about rails! boo hoo I say), you will have to worry about massholes when you hear that "THOK!" launching sound.
It's going to be an interesting month in March. I expect adjustments to roll out soon after 1.8 drops...

I'm actually really looking forward to using it again, it was my absolute FAVORITE weapon since closed beta (ie. i was one of the first people to use it) i used it ALL the time, but then.... people started using it too much and soon it became overused and ccp had to nerf it. Sometimes i like to think i started the mass driver trend.

It's a 33% damage increase for the Standard Mass Driver, 27% damage increase for the Advanced 'normal' Mass Driver, and 22% increase for the Prototype 'normal' Mass Driver (that's for direct damage, not splash). Damage of a Basic MD was 225/115 and a Freedom MD 270/138. That is becoming 300/145 Basic and 330/159.5 Prototype.
So, yes, I feel that the MD damage buff is significant. However, it is losing 15% damage against Shields from the Proficiency changes and 10% damage if two Complex Damage Mods are used because of the Damage Mod effectiveness reduction. I think the MD may kill just a little bit faster than before. With the Rifles getting leveled out a bit, the gap between the MD and the Rifles will probably be fairly small. |

I hope it's significant anyway. While I don't relish the thought of being lumped in with the FOTM massholes I do hope my mass driver can go back to being a serious threat again. |

Mass Drivers have been around for a good while and became really nice in Chromosome. So no you did not start no trend. ((Double Negative))
Anyways yes the buff is big, as a user I think it may be a little too big, but then again I looked at the resistance on a Amarr Heavy and thought "That's about right"
It's going to become heavy and scout spam in 1.8 and CCP knows it. Will I be a FOTM Mass Driver scrub in 1.8 (or be called one) Yes. But I've stuck by the weapon's side through thin (I refused to use it in 1.4 or 1.3 though) and I will be that 1.8 scrub.
So who the hell cares, Laser Rifle is getting a big buff too and we all remember those.

Try it out for a while. It's considerably harder - considerably - to lay out dps into a target with the MD than with a hitscan bullet hose.
Also, as far as I understand, the 11 rounds isn't happening. Not that this matters considering the ridiculous ammo held in the hitscan weapons.
Also, pre 1.4 the AR users outnumbered 10 of the 12 weapons in the game at the time combined. So everybody and their mother ran ARs not MDs. Fully 10 times as many people ran ARs as MDs. It's just that anytime a player gets killed by something other than what they're using, the temptation is high to cry OP. Doubly so when it's the vast majority of the playerbase.
Expect the crying to happen again. Expect it to be wrong again. |

Look, arguing over what was used more and watching every MD user drop the weapon they "loved" once hit detection got fixed both aren't going to get us anywhere. I'm just happy now that I know the Minmatar assault bonus was changed.
Not sure how you think spamming the ground with explosives is not the not same as spamming AR/ScR/CR/RR.

If you were to simply buff the damage to a level comparable now in 1.7 the base MD would not stand much of a chance in the mid-short range it is restricted to against rifles and makes it a less viable weapon . All of the effort to buff the MD I think is a step to make it a more competitive weapon. One of the obvious problems I saw was that there was trouble applying DPS in mobile situations and within it's best range to quickly apply it especially where the base weapon was concerned the damage now simply makes it more consistent in the clip size and ammo you are restricted to.
The issue of spam is no different than arguing against the range of the Rail Rifle or the overarching effectiveness of the combat rifle compared to the other rifles.

Yes here you are right but I am concerned that in this case the problems occur as with vehicle vs av. CCP nerfs Rifles quite a bit while on the same time buffing the MD quite a bit...I mean they changed these things for a reason a while back...
But its like always with CCP they are always moving in circles balancing wise and of course it has to be the big solution instead of smaller tweaks |

Yes, the MD get a buff of ~+25% damage, which is significant even though they are changing the Prof skill.
I used the MD at various occasions over the last year but not consistently. But when I used it again yesterday I felt that even in its current form it still is a very effective weapon when used against all those militia guys who seem to make up at least 50% of each team in every match. So I'm slightly worried that the damage buff is a bit too much and I'm worried that CCP will over-nerf it and it becomes useless again in a future update.
Can't say if MD will be FOTM again, but I'll definitely give it a try in 1.8, and I think it will at least be a viable choice again.
@JebusMcKing // TIERICIDE, just do it, CCP.

I've used it in PC environments and I can assure you that the MD one on one mid range combat is pathetic to a rifle (doesn't matter which one). It only shines when you use it from second row and without direct line of sight. It is very good in certain situations and when you manage to disorient the enemy (hit direction indicator is your friend...). If a good rifle user sees you first, you are toast most of the time.
That said, I know for sure, that the QQ about the MD will be endless, since no rifle user can stand if somebody kills him with a speciallist weapon. It is absolutely childish, they even have a hard time being killed by another rifle type, but a lazor or MD will make them rage! They will also QQ about not being able to solo heavies anymore... It's just pathetic and I foresee that CCP will go back to rifle supremacy in the near future, which will make the game bland again. |

I think most of the hate comes from the fact the MD is an explosive weapon with splash damage and quite a radius. Those weapons are always hard to balance especially in regard of scalability.
Even is one MD is fine 6 could be easily OP. And in some regard CCP acts really funny on the one hand they are lowering the amount of grenades to lower explosive spam and on the other hand they double buff the MD (ok the double buff is only true when using the Minni Assault).
And not to forget the increase is quite a big one again CCP decided to make lots of big changes all of a sudden instead tweaking these weapons step by step through smaller adjustments. |
