I was bored, but I decided to make this post after reading a post from an otaku.
1. Monster
2. Code Geass R1 and R2 ( you will like Guilty Crown if you liked this)
3. Steins;Gate
Other good ones are Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary), Cowboy Bebop, Deadman Wonderland (kind of messed up, but still a good watch), and Death Note (Highly recommended for people who have a brain and need something a bit more sophisticated. Code Geass is recommended if you like this).

Edit - Deadman Wonderland you'd have to read the manga. The anime is really bad.
Same with Dethnote. The anime just doesn't live up to how good of a story it is.
Cowboy Bebop is a rarity among english dubbed anime however. Was excellent and had superb voice actors.
Some good anime : Berserk (manga is better though), Attack on Titan, Furi Kuri (japanese subtitle, english dubbed had great voice actors, but was shoddy in the translation), |

Other good animes: Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei (you have to be a little crazy to like this one, but if you are, there's no substitute), Mushishi (a true masterpiece of animation, audio, and storytelling. Not for action nuts.) , Chobits (takes on a whole different tone when you realize it was made by the only all-female anime studio in Japan). Darker Than Black had its moments but was like 6 or 7/10 overall.
Bojo: Studio Ghibli is like the gateway drug of anime. Try out other things in this thread and you'll discover true anime bliss.

Good to see you included Cowboy Bebop, just found it lying around and watched it; God did it age well 
GANTZ is a must if you can stomach the gore and the unnecessary awkward sex... much like 300's sloppy bedtime fun that added nothing to the plot...
(the manga is WAY better and it "recently" was finished)

Samurai Champloo, another one from Shinichiro Watanabe, makes up for a great watch.
Hellsing, is not as good as the Manga but the OVA compensates it

Oh Samurai Champloo is amazing. A masterpiece of cinematography independent of the great soundtrack and compelling story/characters. Besides you really can't hate hip-hop samurai.

Personally I really don't like most anime, because I can't stand how over the top and ridiculous most of it is.
So these are the rare few that I absolutely love:
Neon Genesis Evangelion (really surprised nobody mentioned it)
Hellsing (the original...but it got really weird toward the end, kinda like Eva)
Love Hina ( yes it's a goddamned harem anime, and I don't care. it's hillarious and clever )
Danganronpa ( originally a PSP game, made into an anime. Watched it for kicks after seeing an abridged version on youtube, and was very surprised by how good it was )

Ughh no don't do it. Ergo proxy is so tempting, it leads you on the whole time and pretends like it has something interesting to say (naming minor characters Deleuze and Gattari FFS) but ends up just blueballing you. Don't watch it. The whole show ends up being one big f--king cop out. It's on par with Lost for unsatisfying.

I mean, I guess finish it up because it's well-animated and the atmosphere is good. Just don't expect a satisfying message. Mostly it pissed me off how they named so many characters after philosophers and then didn't do anything with the rich intellectual soil they had set up.

Oh yeah there's definitely some good scenes, both fight and otherwise, and some really cool settings still to come if you're only on episode 15. I just found it unsatisfying overall compared to the level of potential I felt like it had.

OMG I LOVE YOU! I enjoyed that anime too and it's trully a master piece yet very underrated, everyone needs to watch it but as Marauder said, it's pretty deep so it's good to pay close attention to every chapter.
Also another master piece for me is Nagi no Asukara, it's very recent and it has a very deep story, lovely characters and beautiful animation.

I would hesitate to call any anime a "masterpiece" but then again I think the word's new meaning is used too lightly anyway.
Piece of trivia, a "masterpiece" used to be the work that allowed a student of a craft to graduate from being a student to a fully-fledged craftsman. Fine enough a piece that it proved their mastery.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a good watch, essentially politics and Prussian cavalry battles in space. Grand enough in scale and character it might tentatively be called an epic.
The Tatami Galaxy, a wry and very funny piece about a soul charred by idleness and wasted passion, reviewing how his days at Kyoto University could have played out.
Paranoia Agent. A very well thought-out piece which does a wonderful job of showing how technology and mass-media affects people's daily lives, how people generally take in information passively without realizing it's overarching effects on how they live and how they think. It's about how a phenomenon born from people's stresses takes off and is given life by the media, and eventually people start looking to it for a release, a quick answer, to the problems of modern culture and the modern psyche... and what happens when everyone starts building over their problems with easy answers and simplified solutions.
Essentially it's about stress, commitment and how people deal with them. It's cast is colourful and diverse, representing a vast range of the personalities found in modern society, wonderfully brought to life. Satoshi Kon was an amazing director and I would strongly recommend all of his works. If you're looking for anything with the insight and creativity to actually be laudable as a genuine masterpiece his oeuvre is a very good place to start. |
