The DS3 controller has a fundamental design flaw (which thankfully is fixed on the DS4 controller). The thumb sticks (joysticks) have a convex top and rely solely on a slightly course frictional surface to maintain contact between your thumb and the controller. I find that this does not work very well.
In karting games my thumb often slips of the left thumb stick and hits the PlayStation button, pausing the game, much to my wifeGÇÖs annoyance when we are playing two player. In DUST I find that I have to apply so much force to the thumb stick to maintain precise control that when I pull the trigger I often melee instead of shoot. This has cost me many kills. I also generally find it hard to keep my thumb from sliding around on the top of the stick, which gives me less control.
I complained about this in a thread a while ago and someone suggested I try these: http://www.kontrolfreek.com/fps.html
So I ordered this: http://www.kontrolfreek.com/fps/fps-freek-ultra.html
I realized after that it extends the length of the stick quite a bit, so if you have smaller hands you might want to order this instead. http://www.kontrolfreek.com/fps-freek-cqc.html
There is a comparison chart here: http://www.kontrolfreek.com/ldr/fps-freeks-compare
These clip to the top of the DS3 stick (make sure you order the DS3 ones as they have DS4 versions as well). I was surprised at how securely they attach. There is no wiggle. They have a Concave top which gives vastly better control. You donGÇÖt really have to push down on them at all. You can just hook the lip with your thumb and pull it sideways. (There are some convex ones available as well if you prefer.)
They also make the stick longer, which is like dropping the sensitivity setting without losing any reaction speed. Or you can set your sensitivity up for faster reaction speed without sacrificing your ability for fine adjustments. Basically think of the stick as the radius of a circle, and the movement of the stick is registered as degrees of arc. If you make the stick 40% longer (the one I got) then the distance you move your thumb to achieve a degree of arc is 40% farther than on the shorter (default) stick.
If you have large hands with tendons/nerves which have been abused through years of manual labor, or in my case Rock Climbing, you may find it hard to make very small precise movements. Making the stick 40% longer allows you to make the same precise adjustment by moving your thumb 40% farther. For older people, or people with big hands, it is easier to make the larger movements.
If you have smaller hands, or you donGÇÖt want to change the sensitivity as much, I would suggest one of the ones with a height of 0.3 rather than the one I ordered which has an added height of 0.45. (I assume that is in inches.) The 0.45 ones increases movement range by 40%. There is also a 0.49 one which might be good for sniping.
Keep in mind that it will take you a few games to get used to, just like it would take a few games to get used to if you changed your sensitivity settings dramatically.
This is not a software mode. It is simply a hunk of plastic with a bit of rubber on it that makes the joysticks longer and give better grip. But if you have trouble with your thumb sliding on the DS3 controller, then you will probably love these little hunks of plastic.
I have no affiliation with this company. I am simply a satisfied customer sharing my experience.

Still loving these things.
In fact I like them so much that I also ordered the lower profile ones that are basically just caps with a concave top for the top of the thumb sticks. They are great too, but donGÇÖt give the extra control (leverage) when aiming at something a long ways away that the longer ones give.
I now realize why the low profile ones are referred to as being for CQC. They are still better than the DS3 thumb sticks without the caps in every way. But if you are using a Sniper Rifle, Rail Gun, or Railgun Tank you might prefer the ones that make the sticks longer as the leverage you get from the longer sticks gives you finer movement control.

This is a great suggestion, and I've had something similar on my DS3 controller for a long time. Highly recommended and liked. |

As a slightly more expensive solution, you could get a PS4 controller and use it on your PS3. It requires a corded connection at all times, but I much prefer the whole feel over the DS3. |

Have you been able to confirm compatibility? I understood that the PS4 controllers would not work on PS3 machines.

Good stuff. I need something. I bought a new DS3 controller thinking that would cure my woes. It didn't. I still use my old beat up one. I like it because its loose but I need some precise movements for those tight situations.
I will have to look into these...

I have squadded with a person who was using a DS4 controller.
