When I see people post scores like these, I can't help but cut the kill count in half of what they are actually boasting about. How's about you godly players take a picture if the score board, and prove your score that way. I'm not saying its impossible to get a score like that, but you people make it sound like you get that score on nearly every game you people play. Yeah, those scores really aren't hard to get. Maybe the 46-6 one, but that's purely because its hard to find that many people. I mean, my best ever record in the last two years of playing was 63-6 with a shotgun But 20-0? Come on man, that's easy! A good sniper will get that almost every round, and I can do that pretty often too. I mean, think about it, look at the K/d's of the top 100 players in kills. If someone has an AVERAGE K/d of 4-5, is it not possible for them to get lucky and role high every once in a while? In my opinion, when a score goes above 20 kills, and the K/d is still above 7, that's when things start to get a lot less likely. I mean, I just went 14-2 with my Laser rifle suit....... The match before that I went 25-5 in my standard heavy suit. And honestly I don't think either of those scores are that great for me.
I think Marston VC, in his followup post, makes a good point, namely that having 36M SP and the knowledge/fits to prevail in any given situation on a given map, goes quite a long way.
But the points he makes in the above quote are bogus, in my experience. DISCLAIMER: I make no claim to be an uber player, and I only play pub matches.
I primarily snipe, so I'm always checking for killboards after a match to see how I stack up against other snipers. On matches where I snipe and do well (which for me would be 10+/0-1), it is super uncommon to see anyone else on the board with <= 1 death. It just really doesn't happen that often, and if it does, it was either another sniper or (actually more likely) a proto frontline fit with hella much logi support. A good sniper doesn't go 20/0 most rounds unless they drop matches a lot to cherry pick maps.
I'd also point out that a lot of the top 100 players are throwaway alts where a player had a few ridiculously good round and stopped using that toon. Anyone that owns one of those characters and brags about it is a lamer.
Have you seen my baseball?

Anyone that owns one of those characters and brags about it is a lamer. I disagree, I think a good sniper can consistently pull in over 20 kills. Perhaps not in ambush, but certainly in skirmish or dom if they know the map well enough. At the very least, unless they get counter sniped, a sniper should be able to at least pull in good K/ds. And I said top 100 players in KILLS. You cant have a top 100 in kills throwaway alt. Its a full time job. (otherwise you get beat out by somebody). That's why the top 5 guys in total kills are competing so closely to each other (within 1000 kills usually). Yes, many of the top 100 in kills players are tankers so for them the theory doesn't apply. But usually you can pick out which ones are tankers because their K/ds are typically going to be above 6-7 or more. But to be in the top 100 in the world, and still maintain a 4-5 k/d, not only is that impressive, but its also not uncommon. And other then that, yeah your right, the SP is definitely important. Im not "amazing" by any stretch of the imagination. BUT I do have enough SP so that my gear collection is varied enough to deal with any situation.
I missed the part about the kills specifically--you're spot-on. I was referring to the top 100, period, which I think most folks agree is bunk.
I guess there aren't that many good snipers in public matches, since I don't usually see scores of 20+/0-1 for most folks that pop up in the killfeed with sniper rifles. But I agree that they should, at least, be getting good KDRs, since they shouldn't be dying much. Not hard to get a KDR of 5+ when you don't die!
My other dropsuit is a Python.
