personally i don't take any gun past spec 3 anymore, I know within a month or two it'll be a completely different gun so I see little merit in taking it further then 3.
I just suspect everything to get flaylocked |

Yep, learnt my lesson after putting all that SP into the assault rifle; but then it was the only gun we had for so long. Only put level 1 with RR and CR. And I'm doing fine with them.

Any weapon on a starter fit is worth bringing to spec 5, so assault rifles, scrambler pistols, and smgs...
Sees prototompers...
Sees blueberries start to snipe...
Pulls out commando suit with laser rifle and swarm launcher...

I have 4 on my sniper rifle, but I can't fathom sitting around to unlock the 5th level. I have 2 or 3 on ARs (before they were made obsolete) and the first level of swarms (what a waste that's turned out to be!) Just unlocked the 2nd level for HMGs in the past week, though, and will likely take it to level 3 before turning my attention elsewhere.
Life is killing me.

Then I've got ADV Rail rifles, Snipers and Shotguns! Getting them to 5 is a relatively small SP amount so I'm not too fussed. But I'll never get the FOTM weapons like RR and Flaylock as they will always get nerfed.

Nobody who knows better specs lvl 5 in EVE (and therefore DUST) if it doesn't lead to a higher tier. That is the only reason it is there. You are wasting sp for what you get.

I took SR to operation 5 proficiency 1 and wish now I had done something else. I also got hand helds up to lvl 3 before I realized they don't do **** for the SR. That's a ton of FotM I missed out on :(

I'm not getting lvl5 Cal ADS. I only need to to fire as fast as I can accurately (usually a trigger pull), and lvl3 does it just fine (I may get lvl4 eventually though).
ADS Kills: Lost count a while ago...

I don't bother speccing 5 into other light weapons because my Assault Rifle is my bestfriend. YEAH, I SAID IT. It's not having the best of times currently but it's still here.
Err-Anyway.
I'll specc into the SMG at least to Prof 1 one day and hopefully the ion Pistol too. I'm still speccing into things tho. Just got my CPU, PG, and Shield Extension skills to level 5. Working on my profile dampening right now. Only got two more skill levels for that. I might do my scanner next since I run Galletente Logi when needed and I already have the Scanner at level 3 skill.

Another important rule is to not pick a weapon because it's OP but because you actually like it's role and use. Like, the Rail Rifle will receive a nerf but it is still THE rifle for long distance strikes and high damage output or the Scrambler Rifle could be nerf but it's still a high-alpha damage focused weapon for medium to long range combat.
It's only rare situations where weapons get their role specific attributes changed or become completely unviable(e.g. the laser rifle).

In order to overcome the shield-regen on a tank, you'll need Prof 5 on Swarms, and 3 damage-mods - less than Prof 5, and you can give up trying to kill tanks with swarms.

I never go Lvl 5 unless it unlocks something at proto that I need, or grants a fitting bonus that I absolutely need. If it's just an extra percentage stat like weapon proficiency, I don't bother and stick with Lvl 4 or Lvl 3.
And SP to get from 0 to 4 is equal to the SP to get from 4 to 5. |
