UPDATE:
So I've learned more of the nuances of the game having gotten some great advice from this and other threads and from in game experience. I've discovered the wonders of the mouse. I also have an idea of what fits my play style, which seems to be some combo of frontline and scout. I haven't decided a weapon to spec but I'll wait until after 1.8 drops for that. So in these aspects things seem to be improving.
However, just when I think I'm climbing out of the rut, they pull me right back in. These last few sp grind sessions have been fierce suckfests. Even with the magic of the mouse at my hand I've been getting tuned up left and right and left again. I can handle it when its a proto heavy with boundless hmg that puts me down, what can you do about that? But when its other scrappers with militia gear that paint my hud red I get that useless feeling all over again. Why do I bother I wonder as I'm shopping for a safe spawn point.
And I'm lying about the munchkin with proto hmg, screw him and that ammo spewing lawnmower he rode in on. |

I think you need to find some good squadmates. Not only can they give you more in depth advice, but the teamwork that results will likely mean your KDR should get better.

being in a full squad is always going to be the best result from the game and if you all have microphones.. well that makes the game a lot easier to play.
now you just need to figure out what kind of game you want to play and go for that.
personally I have an idea on what I like... though that changes every few weeks/months

For a combo frontline scout my alt is a Gallente scout with a rifle mainly AR, but she is also a test bed for RR and CR.
My warrior scout essentially is lots of armoured plates and use the passive scan distance and precision for advantages. Stay close to a group, flank, hit hard and melt away. Remove the enemy flankers relying on stealth... once you play scout you will recognise the paths.
If scanning is becomming an issue slip on a suit with a better set of Dampeners until you disappear again and if possible hit the scanner hard from behind. Nothing quite as tasty as watching someone twirl around with a scanner and then melt them down with a shotgun. |

Once I get a headset I'll jump into squadding.Definitely looking to do that.
No FragFX yet. Rather expensive and I've learned it has issues with diagonal aiming. I'll wait until they've corrected that.

Something may actually be working but I wouldn't know because I'm using militia gear. Maybe that guy I riddled with my MAR would have been a kill but instead all I seemed to do was tap him on the shoulder and then point to the bullseye on my chest. So I think I need to upgrade my gear options but I don't want to invest skills in weapons and armor that I wont ever use again.
What's a newb to do in this situation?
I would suggest HMG heavy for a low SP character.
For some reason there is much less difference between standard heavies and proto, e.g. standard heavy has about 1200 HP versus 1500 for proto, while standard medium (assault/logi) has about 300 HP versus 800+ for proto. Also there is bonus SP for HMG kills until Wednesday.
Only problem is there's no militia HMG, so it takes 100,000s of SP to test. So make a new character, try out HMG heavy in academy and a few 'real' games on that character, and if you like it spend the SP on your main. |

Actually, there's an entry level hmg in the loyalty market. I grabbed a few, used it once. Guy drops right in front of me and opens up his rifle in my face. Normally I'd be done for, but i just pull the trigger and he drops in a split second. I switched back to starter fit medic right after. |

This could also be accredited to two other things, not related to your improving other skills.
1. There are uptimes and downtimes of proto players on each server. You might have actually hit an uptime of usually very good squads running cheap suits to conserve money. A tip to help put in perspective how well you are actually doing. I run solo more often now that my mic is broken and I feel bad I can't communicate with my team, but otherwise, I hate it. I fluctuate between 1st and almost dead last in standings. Every time you feel you did specifically very poorly, take a look at your opponent listing. Are most all of those people from the same corp? That's why it ended up so badly for you. Just because they are running militia gear, does NOT mean they are new players. Remember that.
2. You had an off day. We ALL have time. Sometimes, its even an off week. I remember a high day where I felt untouchable. It was like the hand of god was with me and I smite everything in my path. Mind you, I'm a support logi. I don't kill ANYTHING usually (I'm also a very bad shot myself) but this day I was on fire. Then there are other days where I die 3 times in less than a minute. I feel like my rounds are bouncing off people. And my frustration also sometimes leads to mistakes like blowing myself up with my own RE just trying to accomplish anything at all.
Be mindful of those two scenarios. We're not going to do well every game, every day. If we did, we would get bored. We're all going to have disappointing days. But I can guarantee with a squad, you'll have more good days than bad. And with a great squad, even those bad days can be funny with the right attitude among really cool peeps.

It's also worth remembering that skilled vets will tens of millions of SP have skilled up their dropsuit's core upgrades...which means even their militia fits have substantially more PG, CPU, armor, and shields than those of someone who hasn't maxed those out yet.
If we get a SP refund in 1.8 then I'm maxing out my core upgrades first, and then using militia fits until I get a better idea of how everything is working. |

Focus on getting a proto weapon, than the suit.
And expect to die a lot. This "tiered system" is killer on noobs that have to face proto equipment most every match.
Their gun goes pew pew yr dead.
Yr gun just goes Pew pew, non stop.
(You might notice a difference by getting a weapon skill up to level 4, so that you can use the specialized variants.

Do you have experience in other shooters? I am new and I just move by the group. I have learned to pick my engagements. Use the feed in the bottom right. Find a blue PRO and follow him. Watch his back and you can get kills when he is reloading.

Where did you learn that? I've not noticed it.
That said, please look me up once you get a headset -- I'm always happy to help newer players.
Take care...Leadfoot
p.s. get a full headset with mic -- do not fall into the trap of the earpiece....they generally always suffer from feedback/echo which makes squadding with people who use them painful. |

I'm going to toss this out there.
Don't feel bad if other people are beating you in militia suits. It could be vets running them, could be you are having an off day, could be any number of things.
Also consider what role you are playing, how you play, etc.
If you're the type of person who is always playing in a high risk environment, you could actually be doing quite well but still getting killed.
What are you doing? I've died 4+ times sometimes defending a point because I knew that the rest of my squad was inbound to help defend a point, all I had to do was buy them time to get there.
There will be times when you are killed and you did nothing wrong, so don't feel bad about 'em. |

I must strongly endorse getting armor, shield, and PG/CPU upgrades to level 5. THEN focus on a proto weapon.
But that's just me.

I concur with Zaaeed.
By all means if there is a weapon you like, get it up to Adv and a few levels in supplementary skills so that killing people is easier. But suits and core skills take priority IMO over proto weapons. |

Specialize. You're likely spread out all over with your SP into too many things.
Pick a weapon. Max it out. The old saying "This is my rifle... there are many like it, but this one is mine." holds very true.
Core Dropsuit skills are essential. Anything that gives a passive bonus to your armor, shields, PG/CPU should get maxed out. Get ADV plates and Shield extenders. When you're young TANK > GANK IMO.
Be sneaky. Let other guys running ADV or Proto stick their heads out first and clean up what they don't kill.
Run as logi. Stay in cover and spam militia droplinks. Stab people with space-morphine for WP, or be a miniliogibro with a milita rep tool.
You aren't Rambo. Even if you're running by yourself, work with others around you. Follow them. Provide cover fire. Watch thier backs. |

I will say to keep trying out items to see if you find a good fit, preferably on alts, but also just want to say don't give up on the LR.
The LR was nerfed a bit ago and so when I see one on the field, my eyebrows raise. However, 1.8 is supposedly bringing a buff for the LR. It might make the gun more in line with its previous ability and be a viable choice again.

having choice is great.. got laser rifle 5 prof 4 myself.. loved it for a bit got bored.. got AR 5 ptof 4 used it a while.
see the pattern I have fallen into. I personally have most weapons to at least level 3 with a few to level 5 so far.
sticking with only minmatar suits, meaning I am a repping logi when in a good squad. or the future minmatar heavy suits for my HMG paladins.
and one day many months from now i'll get bored of the minmatar and i'll then start speccing into maybe caldari?? maybe if they can get the ECM abilities in their suits then yeah ecm bursting ammo hub guy with pen and basic rep for reviving people. hmmm maybe a claocky scanning gallante scout or some new at that time cov ops specialists scout suit for scanning in hostile regions. or maybe the lure of the queen of the ammarians can convert me to their righteous cause of purification of the non beleivers and I be back in a proto level commando heavy with scrambler rifle laser rifle mix of shield killing laser fire swapped to scrambler full auto model to kill his armor.
one thing I like about ccp games all the crazy options you can do. the length of time its taking to get the stuff we all want is taking a hell of a long time. but hey eve took at least 7 years to get great.. and 10 to make people want to hop back in the pod and go hunting in lowsec.
not sure if you have done it but research into your race in eve and make sure that their phlosyfy matches that of whae you can envison when starting this game. a big part people forget is that no matter how silly it maybe but yeah we make a persona of who this guy I am playing is. in dust this toon is a brother of a pod pilot, to say that the family is a military one I think is not needed to be mentioned. and this guy is a gallanete that has taken on the cause to find minmatars a home world and liberty and all that.
lol.. so yeah why I am a gallante but run minmatar gear, to blend in and not be noticed. |
