You stated in another thread that you've been playing only a few weeks, OP. This is going to be a very difficult place for you for a while. That being said, you need to find yourself a squad. I again really urge you to join The Learning Coalition to get some tips from great scouts, heavies and assault or even tanker and pilots.
For the skills, I've VERY glad you haven't skilled into anything yet. I would recommend you search these forums for Fox Gaden. He has written a crap ton of guides that speak to each roles and how best to work with them in the game as it is. He painstakingly goes back through each one after each update to ensure all information is correct.
First and foremost: skill into core upgrades on your main!
That means, under skills: Dropsuit Upgrades -> Armor/Shields also Core -> Electronics and Engineering.
No matter what role you end up loving, these skills will help you. What they provide is:
Armor: +5% armor per level Shield: +5% shield per level Electronics/Engineering: +5% CPU/PG per level
That means if you max out these core skills, without having skilling into ANY suit, no matter what you wear will have 25% more armor, more shields and more pg/cpu for you to use. This goes a very long way towards your survivability.
Now, you're going to need to start testing weapons and EQ to see what really resonates with you. What you want to do is start creating alt characters. You'll notice you can create up to 3 per account. Create a new character but keep your main. Make sure passive stays on your main and that you skill into core consistently.
On the alt character, spend all available sp into one suit and one weapon. Go out and test it. Do you like it? Not sure? makes some mental notes on how it overall feels. If you really hate it, stop, but if you don't play with it a few weeks and use the earned sp in battle to level it up some more. After you are through, delete the alt. Now create a new alt character. Do the same thing with the next suit/weapon.
Keeping doing this. By the time you find your niche, that 'omg this fits me exactly', you can delete all your alts and go back to your main and spend all that passive SP on the thing you love.

Also, just some extra thoughts. Once you get some experience on your side, you'll start to notice that the level of suit only gets you so far and individual player skills are what really win in this game. ONLY when you have found your niche and have some good experience on your belt (this helps because you'll have muscle memory on controls and a good idea of map layouts already), I'd recommend you also use an alt to practice 3 things:
1. strafing. Learn it. Love it. Use it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYXffQMXXxM
2. gun game. Once you get really comfortable with the game, you may or may not have better gun game than other players. to improve that, create an alt and equip him with nothing but a scrambler pistol. You're going to die...A LOT. but this alt character will teach you to conserve ammo and really tighten your aim (use the sights!!). With only 5 shots in the gun to start, you really have to make them count.
3. flanking. The last thing and really the thing that wins the game. Everyone isn't winning against you because they're better with better gear (sometimes yes, but not always). They are usually beating you because they're getting you from behind or your sides where you can't see them. They're using scanners so they know exactly where you are and how to run around you to kill you before you can turn. You need to start learning how to flank. Stop running straight on into someone. I know you're eager. You're looking down the barrel and you see his health bar just so close to dying, so you keep shooting, you keep your weak body out of cover and go for it aaaaannnnnd die.

While this is generally useful, I disagree with maxing electronics and engineering, armor/shields definitely, but engineering and electronics cost about 1.5+ mil SP just to max out. For a new player that's a lot. For the equivalent SP spent on getting them to level 5 you could effectively have 4 proto weapons with some SP left over for weapon support skills... I'd say get Engineering and Electronics at most to level 4 for now, or even to level 3, and then top up to mix/max your fit. Other than that, +1 for the rest.
Having just created an alt, I have to agree with you. Getting that much sp to start would be hard for those newer to the game. I'm having fun just dinking around but I think that's because I have the security of my main to fall back on. I edited my original post. Thanks, waffle.
dammit!....now I want waffles.

Meisterjager Jagermeister wrote:UPDATE:
So I've learned more of the nuances of the game having gotten some great advice from this and other threads and from in game experience. I've discovered the wonders of the mouse. I also have an idea of what fits my play style, which seems to be some combo of frontline and scout. I haven't decided a weapon to spec but I'll wait until after 1.8 drops for that. So in these aspects things seem to be improving.
However, just when I think I'm climbing out of the rut, they pull me right back in. These last few sp grind sessions have been fierce suckfests. Even with the magic of the mouse at my hand I've been getting tuned up left and right and left again. I can handle it when its a proto heavy with boundless hmg that puts me down, what can you do about that? But when its other scrappers with militia gear that paint my hud red I get that useless feeling all over again. Why do I bother I wonder as I'm shopping for a safe spawn point.
And I'm lying about the munchkin with proto hmg, screw him and that ammo spewing lawnmower he rode in on.
This could also be accredited to two other things, not related to your improving other skills.
1. There are uptimes and downtimes of proto players on each server. You might have actually hit an uptime of usually very good squads running cheap suits to conserve money. A tip to help put in perspective how well you are actually doing. I run solo more often now that my mic is broken and I feel bad I can't communicate with my team, but otherwise, I hate it. I fluctuate between 1st and almost dead last in standings. Every time you feel you did specifically very poorly, take a look at your opponent listing. Are most all of those people from the same corp? That's why it ended up so badly for you. Just because they are running militia gear, does NOT mean they are new players. Remember that.
2. You had an off day. We ALL have time. Sometimes, its even an off week. I remember a high day where I felt untouchable. It was like the hand of god was with me and I smite everything in my path. Mind you, I'm a support logi. I don't kill ANYTHING usually (I'm also a very bad shot myself) but this day I was on fire. Then there are other days where I die 3 times in less than a minute. I feel like my rounds are bouncing off people. And my frustration also sometimes leads to mistakes like blowing myself up with my own RE just trying to accomplish anything at all.
Be mindful of those two scenarios. We're not going to do well every game, every day. If we did, we would get bored. We're all going to have disappointing days. But I can guarantee with a squad, you'll have more good days than bad. And with a great squad, even those bad days can be funny with the right attitude among really cool peeps.

It takes longer to make a kill than boiling water in a microwave. Got a bunch of kill assists though and forced them to fall back from their vantage point a few times.
I will say to keep trying out items to see if you find a good fit, preferably on alts, but also just want to say don't give up on the LR.
The LR was nerfed a bit ago and so when I see one on the field, my eyebrows raise. However, 1.8 is supposedly bringing a buff for the LR. It might make the gun more in line with its previous ability and be a viable choice again.
