I'm pretty sure this has been mentioned here and there around the forms, but searching didn't turn up anything specific, so here goes. I think a very interesting feature to add to Sniper Rifles would be the ability to tag enemies. So basically when you have an enemy in your sights, you can press some secondary fire button (probably L2) to tag the enemy, effectively lighting him up like an active scanner would. Only let the tags last significantly longer than a scanner would, but balance this by only giving the sniper a handful of active tags that he can have available at one time (say maybe 3-6). Potentially increase number of active tags with gear level (although I know everyone rails against creating a bigger gap between STD and PRO) and/or add a skill to the SR to increase active tags available.
I believe this would help give snipers an actual team-based role on the battlefield. And giving them WP for the intel assists would actually encourage them to actively help out their squad, so we have less snipers just sitting in one place the whole match trying to do nothing but rack up kills.

This is definitely something I'd like to see. When sniping, I've often offered intel to my squad, but sometimes it's a bit harder to convey it over voice.
I'd like to be your CPM1 candidate

I like the general idea
My only problem is that currently the game mechanic is:
If your actively scanned - the enemy is a fair distance away but at least your told your highlighted. Giving you the option to back off / search for the scanner. If your passively scanned - your not told about it but the enemy is close by, so your own suit scanner has a chance of picking him up as well.
Also the changes to the scanner are specifically to prevent an enemy scanning you indefinitely. I know there is general LOS issues but this mechanic will allow permascanning to continue, but again without the warning.

I hadn't exactly thought about the warning mechanic, but I don't see why this couldn't also just give them same message. Seems pretty fair, given the effective range it would work at.
In regards to how long the scans last, I do believe they should last longer than Active Scanner scans. But like I said, this would be balanced by being able to tag far less people at a time than Active Scanners.

I like the idea in general but think it should be opened up a little - all players should get some sort of tagging ability, whether sniper, scout, AV, whatever. You can tag one or two players at a time but that tag only remains as long as you maintain line of sight on the target, so it would not be as OP as active scanning.
Perhaps certain things like snipers and scouts give a buff to the number of tags you can have active and/or the length of time the tag lasts after losing LOS? Then sniper scouts would suddenly become really useful - oh yes I think the registry lads will like this!

This would be nice... but you'd have to fix the rendering issues first. The Z-fighting/culling issues around Surface Installations and mountainous terrain being the biggest thing needed to achieve something like this.
It really doesn't matter if you can tag someone... when no body renders in the area you are looking in.

This would just revert us back to before 1.4 where everyone could see anyone because of shared team vision.

sniper irfle tagging has been mentioned (by me) in literally every single thread complaining about sniper rifles since beta.
general idea was to nerf scanners, and let snipers have basically the same effect we have now.
then you can have various sniper rifles with various lengths of tag time, i.e the tactical rifle would tag longer then the charged. |

2 things:
1. Any enemy in the crosshairs of a Sniper Rifle should be marked on TacNet for everyone on the Sniper's team as long as the Sniper is scoped in on the target and has high enough Scan Precision to pick up the enemy.
2. Scouts should also light up enemies when they're scoped in with the target in the crosshairs, but only within a limited range, where Sniper Rifles should have a much more generous range limit.
3. Any enemy lit up on the TacNet should remain visible after being lit up for a period of time based on their Scan Profile.
These would encourage Snipers to work as more of a team asset rather than a purely solo role, as well as buffing Scout Snipers in particular (a role CCP keep trying to promote without really doing anything to support it) and adding another layer of usefulness to both Profile Dampeners AND Precision Amplifiers. |
