Hello all, newberry here. I've been playing about two weeks now and lovin every minute....well, until recently, bit that's another thread.
Anyway, I don't own a headset yet so I don't know if others are trying to communicate with me. Because of this IGÇÖve been pretty much running solo. Can anyone in blue talk to me? Does not being able to hear them screw up a battle.
What sort of headset do I need. Are those little bluetooth ones or the single speaker headset any good?

Hi, welcome to hell (New Eden). Blueberries can talk to you but mostly in all battles they never have a Mic. I suggest you join a corp and join a squad. Communication is vital in a squad as this seems to be the only players that use mics. The MIC I use is the Playstation 2.0 Bluetooth headset it is great, cost only around $30. If you need a corp join 703rd we squad a lot. Fill the Ranks.
Well, time to go Commando.

Whenever you join a battle, you automatically join the team chat voice channel if you do not have it activated on another channel previously, regardless if you have a headset plugged in or not. Most of the time, nobody uses that channel aside mobile radios and annoying static people, so leaving the team voice chat is advisable.
Personally, getting a bluetooth headset(or a corded one with at least a three meter cable) is the best solution, even more if you can set the in-game audio to play through your headphones as well, not just the voice chat. It helps a lot with your awareness of your surroundings, and to hear your squadmates a lot better.

I would recommend you get a full headset (i.e. both ears) with a mic.
The teamwork and intel you get through the use of one is invaluable. |

Ask anyone who has played with a headset if they gave it up. I bet you won't find many, so yeah, get one.
Because, that's why.

For starting out, I would recommend you join a chat channel created for new players. They answer your questions and squad with you to show you the ropes. The Learning Coalition is one of those channels. It's helpful to join these channels so you don't have to commit to a corp just yet.
In addition, if you're playing solo and want to continue doing that, I would suggest you jump into the most full squad. Either use squad finder or when you first get into a game, open the 'Team' channel and add yourself to the most full squad. Turn on 'activate voice' on squad. Team chat can get really annoying. It's usually static or just one person in particular yelling. Squad chat is where most people are, in there own little pods.
- A poor squad won't be on chat and will be a bunch of aimless greens scattered around the map. Usually that's an SL hoping to get a orbital out of you.
- A good squad will use mics to convey basic information. We are heading to objective #. There's someone behind you. Sniper on the hill, etc.
- A GREAT squad uses both mics and SL commands.
Sometimes I run into a few squads who have worked together so often, they don't even use mics and are efficient machines, but in general, being able to give that extra eyes is just so valuable. *Grenade under you, move, move! *Someone scan for me. *Jump out of DS in 3..2..1...go!
All of that really adds to the team feel and makes this game night and day different. If you find a squad that works really well together and you are working well with them, after a match, mention how fun it was to squad with them. They might give you a chat invite for future games or even a corp invite. Both are great for your continued survival in this game.
Good luck, OP!

Communication
Sharing information and intentions is key to working effectively as a squad or as a team. While there is certainly some advantage for a bunch of green dots sticking together over lone wolfing, without communication the squad is just a green amebic mass with no clear sense of direction or purpose. Granted, a group of experienced players may all individually know what needs to be done, causing the squad to move together and work toward the same goal, but this can break down quickly if there is more than one logical path to take.
At the very minimum the squad leader should have a mic and the rest of the squad should have voice active so they can hear the squad leaderGÇÖs directions. This allows the squad to know where they are going and coordinate their actions.
Ideally everyone in the squad will have a mic. While the squad leader makes the command decisions on where the squad is going, and what they are trying to achieve, it is each squad memberGÇÖs responsibility to keep the squad leader informed of the tactical situation, and to provide information to help the squad coordinate.
- Call out enemy movements, sniper positions, and vehicle sightings. - Warn squad mates if they are being flanked. - Announce what you are doing if relevant. (eg. GÇ£I am flanking left.GÇ¥) - Acknowledge orders. - Remind the Squad Leader to put up a defend order, if no Squad commands are up. (Easy to forget.) - Let the Squad Leader know if you notice that your squad has earned an orbital strike. (Easy to miss.) - Discussion of tactical objectives, if the squad leader is open to suggestions. But remember who is in command.
When referring to Skirmish Objectives the military terms for the letters should be used because B, C, D, and E sound very similar and can be confused over coms.
A = Alpha B = Bravo C = Charley D = Delta E = Echo
Direction, Distance, and Position
Calling locations is both one of the most important, and one of the most challenging aspects of communication.
Direction: On the spawn map, North is up. On the ground the little GÇ£NGÇ¥ that orbits your radar screen tells you which way is North. So, if the GÇ£NGÇ¥ is in the 3 oGÇÖclock position you are facing West.
Direction can also be given as a relation to other landmarks. I can say that I was sniped at Charley and the shot came from the Alpha direction. Lining those two objectives up gives an approximate vector.
GÇ£Out fromGÇ¥ or GÇ£BehindGÇ¥ usually means on the side closest to the edge of the map.
Analog clock positions can be used to give a direction based on the position and orientation of the person you are talking to or the object you are talking about. 12 oGÇÖclock (in front), 3 oGÇÖclock (to the right), 6 oGÇÖclock (behind), and 9 oGÇÖclock (to the left). The term GÇ£on your 6" is short form for GÇ£on your 6 oGÇÖclockGÇ¥.
Distance: It can be very tricky to figure out distance in DUST. Here are a few things you should know: - The edge of your radar screen is approximately 100m out from your location. - The text that comes up just left of centre at the bottom of your screen when you are aiming at something with a health bar shows the distance to that object. - The grids on the map images posted on the forums do not correspond to a set distance. Different maps have different grid sizes. - Knowing the optimal and effective range of your weapon will help you get a feel for judging distance in DUST. For instance an SMG does optimal damage out to around 10m while it is not really effective beyond 30m. Optimal and Effective ranges for the Assault Rifle are 40m & 65m.
Position: The most effective way of identifying position in DUST is to use landmarks. If you are trying to identify a position which is not close to a landmark you may have to use a direction and distance in relation to the nearest landmark.
The most common landmarks are the Skirmish Objectives. If you are not in a Skirmish then it is common to refer to where the Objectives would be in a Skirmish match. GÇ£Their MCCGÇ¥ and GÇ£Our MCCGÇ¥ are also consistent landmarks in Skirmish.
Other landmarks include what is seen in the landscape such as GÇ£that tall towerGÇ¥, GÇ£that hill to the NorthGÇ¥, or GÇ£the saddle in the ridge lineGÇ¥.
There are some buildings and land forms that are distinct enough to act as reliable and unique references such as GÇ£the MushroomGÇ¥ in the Communications Complex, GÇ£the MazeGÇ¥ and GÇ£the Car PortGÇ¥ in the Biomass Outpost, or the GÇ£PipesGÇ¥ in Ashland. If you play with the same people all the time you can name a lot of landmarks, but when playing with new people it is best to keep it obvious.
Here are a few examples of how to communication position:
- GÇ£3 Reds at AlphaGÇ¥ or GÇ£3 Reds where Alpha would beGÇ¥
- GÇ£Lets take the CRU behind AlphaGÇ¥
- GÇ£The tank is on the road between Charley and Delta.GÇ¥
- GÇ£Sniper on the North ridge in the saddle.GÇ¥
- GÇ£2 Reds incoming from CharleyGÇ¥

Locating and calling Sniper Positions
Knowing where enemy snipers are is important for your entire squad. If you have counter snipers, they will need to locate the enemy snipers to take them out, and the rest of your squad will want to try to keep cover between them and the snipers as much as possible.
If you see the contrail of a sniper bullet it will point you back to the sniperGÇÖs location, but you probably wonGÇÖt see it if you are the target. If you are hit by a sniper, or you hear a sniper bullet strike close to you, pay attention to your cover and which directions have an open field of fire on your position. If you are standing against a wall you can narrow the sniperGÇÖs location to a 180 degrees radius. If you are standing in a corner, you can narrow it down to a 45 degrees. If there are other structures or obstructions nearby you can narrow it down further. Then from the possible directions which are left you can try to identify if there are any popular sniper nests that have a line of fire on your position.
Call out where you think the sniper may be.
If you get killed by a Sniper, look at the kill report. Call out the name of the sniper, and the distance of the shot, as well as where you were when you died. Your position and the sniperGÇÖs distance from you will indicate whether the sniper is at the edge of the map, or somewhere much closer. The name is important for your squadGÇÖs counter sniper to know if they got the right guy. Often when looking for an experienced Sniper you will first find an inexperienced sniper who is less skilled at disguising their position.
If you see a sniper, call it out. Describe their location as clearly as possible. Knowing exactly where the sniper is, is always better than knowing approximately where the sniper is. Just remember, there may be more Snipers out there, so donGÇÖt let your guard down.

It is worth mentioning that when you install DUST the voice option is deactivated by default. So to hear people you will first have to go into the Options menu and turn voice on. If you do this you will be able to hear other people, even if you donGÇÖt have a mic to talk yourself.

Haha, yes, there is more than that. That's just those who have a mic and are running solo and forget the mic is on. The ones mumbling or coughing are the good ones. It's the one that's yell/whistle/put on blarring background music or have a baby crying non stop that will make you want to break your tv.
It's squad chat you really want. Just ran with a squad with the most excellent communication and SL commands I've ever seen. It's thrilling and totally engaging when you get a squad that good. It sounds corny but it really puts you in the 'got your back mentality' instead of just spraying and hoping your kdr comes out better than everyone.

What are you missing???
1. Better results. Your game will improve as teamwork is an integral part of DUST and communication is an integral opart of teamwork.
2. Accelerated learning curve. Being able to talk to more experienced players will help you improve more quickly.
What should you get???
Right now, I think the best value for your money is the ps3 wireless headset

Yes I do own them and to me they feel confortable although I don't have big ears.
As for the investment, I suppose if you are looking for the cheapest product these are not for you, but I stand by my statement that these are the best bang for your dollar. Here is a comparison of products I have tried...
1. PS3 blue tooth ear piece. - Not very confortable and kept falling out of my ear. - Broke in about 6 months. - Mic was good, - Good noise cancellation. - others heard me well. - Sound quality is not really an issue as it is only used for chatting. - Wireless - Spent about $45 on it. - Can use it with you phone
2. PDP Afterglow Universal Wired Gaming Headset - Great sound. (Lots of bass. Very crisp and clear) - No Mic support for PS3, Mic only works with XBOX - Not very confortable for people with big heads. Comfort for ears was fine. - Spent about $45 on it. - Wired (not wireless) - Quality : felt cheap
3. Turtle Beach P11 - Poor sound. Hissing is very noticable, requires to turn volume very low not to hear it. Bass is very poor. - Mic was fine, but required turning up volume which increased hissing. - Confortable. - Wired. - Quality: average - $59 when I bought it
4. PS3 Headset - Good sound (very impressed with bass considering it has 40 mm speakers, clear sound) - Confortable - Wireless - Good Mic (Good noise cancellation. Others heard me well.) - Supported by Sony and benefits from PS3 software upgrades. - Quality: very sturdy. - $59 right now.

As far as Type of head set and the COST. I own a 35 USD Logi-tech Full wired head set. It works GREAT for 35 buck. Light, Comfy and can wear it for HOURS at a time. Has a mute and volume button built into the wire.
The only 'down ' side was that I had to get an extension for my USB cable. My screen is like 16 feet away. But what, 4 buck? , meh
The mute button comes in very handy for those pub matches with the guys Blaring the music in the back round and their Wives or Mommies screaming at them with a crying babe in their arms. LOL

bought a sony pulse headset a while back.. 100 bucks at walmart and it is very much worth it.
with a decent headset and in a squad that uses them you can hear and relay intel to your squad on the fly..
see a few reds by a supply depot.. shout out the intel with location and ambush them. etc etc.
and well to be honest just having the ability to say say xyz.. how are you between matches is nice. the solo play can be good, but being able to talk with people and laugh does make the game more enjoyable in general.
