For starting out, I would recommend you join a chat channel created for new players. They answer your questions and squad with you to show you the ropes. The Learning Coalition is one of those channels. It's helpful to join these channels so you don't have to commit to a corp just yet.
In addition, if you're playing solo and want to continue doing that, I would suggest you jump into the most full squad. Either use squad finder or when you first get into a game, open the 'Team' channel and add yourself to the most full squad. Turn on 'activate voice' on squad. Team chat can get really annoying. It's usually static or just one person in particular yelling. Squad chat is where most people are, in there own little pods.
- A poor squad won't be on chat and will be a bunch of aimless greens scattered around the map. Usually that's an SL hoping to get a orbital out of you.
- A good squad will use mics to convey basic information. We are heading to objective #. There's someone behind you. Sniper on the hill, etc.
- A GREAT squad uses both mics and SL commands.
Sometimes I run into a few squads who have worked together so often, they don't even use mics and are efficient machines, but in general, being able to give that extra eyes is just so valuable. *Grenade under you, move, move! *Someone scan for me. *Jump out of DS in 3..2..1...go!
All of that really adds to the team feel and makes this game night and day different. If you find a squad that works really well together and you are working well with them, after a match, mention how fun it was to squad with them. They might give you a chat invite for future games or even a corp invite. Both are great for your continued survival in this game.
Good luck, OP!

Haha, yes, there is more than that. That's just those who have a mic and are running solo and forget the mic is on. The ones mumbling or coughing are the good ones. It's the one that's yell/whistle/put on blarring background music or have a baby crying non stop that will make you want to break your tv.
It's squad chat you really want. Just ran with a squad with the most excellent communication and SL commands I've ever seen. It's thrilling and totally engaging when you get a squad that good. It sounds corny but it really puts you in the 'got your back mentality' instead of just spraying and hoping your kdr comes out better than everyone.
