With the loss of the reduction to heat build-up of the amarrian assault suits, does this mean that the laser is still going to be kinda meh? Especially at standard levels?
To put it another way... they laser is pretty horrible on non-assault suits at present, will these changes mean that the standard laser = laser on non-assault suits now, but with more range? I use the standard laser rifle on my Commando and do just fine
Not that a buff isn't needed, but calling it "meh" is grossly over-exaggerating how bad it is.

Also all the other rifles get increased range as they progress though the tiers. I don't personally like this but the laser should get it too.
Oh well something is better than nothing. It gets more damage in the form of omega damage. The longer you hold the laser rifle, the more damage it does. And this isn't one-to-one either; as time moves linearly the damage increases exponentially. So by having less heat build up with higher tiers, you are able to tap into damage values far higher than the standard laser rifle can possibly achieve.

Exponential? I was under the impression it was linear.
Long long ago in beta some claimed that Wolfman said on IRC that the formula was something like:
Damage = base damage + 0.8 * shots fired
This seems to fit with my personal, vague observations.
I wonder if once of the devs could tell use how it works at the moment. |

Here we go. This is the original tertiary source (code itself would be primary source, Wolfman describing the code secondary, observation of Wolfman describing the code tertiary).
It's more than a year old but I suspect that it's still correct (if it was ever correct). Perhaps the scale factor has changed but the form is probably the same. |

The best defense against a Laser Weapon would be thick heat thick armor with great heat dispersion qualities. Even if the other empires managed to develop 100% reflective surfaces, the Amarr could just use different wavelength frequencies to bypass it completely. Mirrors don't stop Radio Waves... This is all down to frequency. Oh, and mirrors do stop radio waves. They're called radio telescopes.
Mirrors aren't effective against real military lasers because most of them are in the infrared, and thus are essentially "heat" lasers. A proper reflector made to the correct frequency would though. As you've stated though, some absorption would still occur, especially for higher power lasers.

The Minmitar Sentinel must get their bonus through good head dispersion, because it certainly is not from reflection.

My concern is that they are nerfing the Infantry Rifles and buffing the Laser Rifle at the same time. You know what happens when CCP nerf one thing and buff another...
Yup, that 15% resistance to lasers on the Minmatar Sentinel is definitely looking better and batter...

Short range damage is about right because it is so powerful at optimal.
The LR needs a wider optimal, about 20M more range added and a fall off that isn't so steep.
I don't think we need to go all overboard with it, it just needs a few minor tweaks to become a very good weapon, it is already probably the best weapon in its optimal.

It seems to me that the rifles aren't the only thing getting nerfed. CCP is looking at TTK as a whole.
I'm wondering if they aren't going to roll back the blanket 10% damage buff they did after removing the Weaponry Skill bonus... that would leave all weapons in relatively the same state of balance, with longer overall TTK.
Anyway, yes. I am finding myself both excited that the Laser Rifle is getting a buff and happy I'm planning on speccing into Minmatar Sentinel at the same time...
(Total side note, I always wanted to know the math behind how the Laser Rifle works. Now I know. Fuggin awesome. Now I need to figure out how many shots the Laser Rifle fires a second, and I can finally figure out the damn DPS of the thing...)
