Ive been thinking about this for a while as I understand the time commitment involved with it and the possible levels of frustration associated with the position. After going through the forums yet again today, I came to the decision that I truly feel that I want to offer up my candidacy for the role of CPM in the upcoming elections.
Why do I want to be a CPM?
Because I honestly believe that this game can be great but it has been backlogged by continuous back and forth adjustments by CCP and them focusing on things that add minimal improvement to the game at the risk of losing players. I hope that my involvement in the CPM would help to focus this game towards something that would appeal to both newberry and bitter vet alike. I understand that the role is not about improving one aspect of the game but appealing to the masses as a whole.
What qualifies me to be a CPM?
I have been around this game for a long time now. While I might not be as old as some of the longer closed beta vets, I have seen its evolution for over a year now and have listed to those who have played it from its earliest introduction. I understand that this game has to not only be enjoyable for veterans who continue to play this game but for players who just installed it yesterday. This game needs to keep those whom have knowledge about where this game has been but it also has to be able to reliably bring in new blood to expand the playerbase. Beyond that, I already have worked in a consultant role as part of a board of advisors for an organization so I am familiar with the responsibilities entailed.
What do I hope to accomplish during my term if elected?
- Expand the amount of options available to players beyond pub matches, factional warfare and planetary conquest. EVE has traders, miners, mission runners, industry, research and exploration. Dust needs alternate options for immersion as well to keep playerGÇÖs attention.
- Help to enrich the new player experience so that they have options other than pub matches against high level SP characters to gain SP and expand their skillsets. One thing that I would continue to push for is the development of diverse PVE experiences that opens the world of Dust and EVE to players.
- Help to expand new layers of PC to Dust. This will give more experienced corps something to move onto and make room for newer corps to get into PC without sacrificing the enjoyment for those that have been around a while. This can be done through expansion into new areas with higher rewards that would make it less attractive to stay in lower levels of PC. I would push for the ability for any corporation to have a fair start beyond just buying clone packs and to increase the opportunities available. I would also push for escalating ISK investment as corps move into higher tiers so that the ISK is used competing against other corps of the same tier instead of just buying proto suits for pub matches.

Skype - I will be creating a skype for Dust shortly
You mention other options outside of public matches to help new player experience, could you provide a few examples of what you mean?
New Eden is all about immersion. It is something that is beyond just a PVP interaction with other players. The biggest issue for new players in this game is that they have a comically short introduction before being thrown to the wolves. In EVE, players have the option to go through tutorials on all the options they could choose right when they create their character. These tutorials can last hours and, when done, give the player a good sense of what each role does and how to perform all the functions. Players are then given the ability to begin their careers in high sec where they have a certain level of safety. The reward for their actions/battle escalates as they allow for added risk to be involved.
This is something that needs to be added into Dust. New players need activities other than simple pub matches to be able to gain SP and ISK. Dust needs these activities as well to invest these players into New Eden and the future of this game.
Part of the new player experience is also giving veterans something to do other than protostomping in pub matches. CCP needs to think along means of opening up new and rewarding activities for high sp/isk players so it is less attractive for them to pick on new players instead of creating ways to limit their actions in the game.

The other candidates mentioned.. Aeon, Appia, and Radar are all veterans who know this game back and front. If I do not receive candidacy, I would be more than happy to put my backing behind them for the betterment of the game.
As far as my personal background and how it relates to the CPM role.
I have my bachelors (and soon to be masters in 3 months) in Marketing. The job of a marketer is to find a common ground between what people want and what market can deliver. It is about managing the process of product development to live up to its billing and it is about communicating to consumers in a way that they understand the product and wish to adopt it.
I feel that it pertains completely to the role of the CPM right now as a members job is to advice CCP on the direction of this game and how they should be communicating it to the player base. The constant trend of this game has been that players feel that CCP over-promises and under-delivers. They feel that they do not have a clear idea of where this product is heading which makes them hesitant to invest in it. I feel that CCP needs to develop better ways to poll their players so that they can understand what they should be working on next and what they need to be communicating to people.
Again, this is just preliminaries. It is about giving people many voices to choose from for candidacy and deciding what the makeup of those candidates should be. Being a vet should not be seen as a limiting factor for CPM as long as those vets will use their experience to benefit the game as a whole and not just themselves. I can say that all of those mentioned are truly invested in the future of this game and would make worth members.

PEST was a basic analysis and while its a little too basic for the real world, it does get you thinking about all the external factors that can impact your business. My main issue with school was that professors were still fixated on the outdated Hierarchy of Needs in trying to explain consumer behavior. It has long been proven that it does not relate to the world that we live in and yet it still gets shoved down the throats of undergrads and grads alike. I can say that I have enjoyed my time in grad school as, while it has given me new information here and there, it has also opened me up to new ways of thinking and a broader view of what impacts businesses and consumers. My background has been strategy which requires you to be able to see as many options available as possible and to always be open to new ways of looking at the world. I always liked marketing because I felt it was an interesting mix of business and psychology.

Yeah it was basic, but like the hierachy of needs got shoved down our throats for too long, i did prefer the strategic management modules that we had though, but while I enjoyed marketing, I felt that it was a bit too repetetive.

The Vet thing was because X number of vets are running each wanting those valuable first choice selection on an ticket, which seems to be a small group to draw from as a voter base. Vets number around 250-300 ish which might get 1-2 if a well made ticket is made.

Canari,
I appreciate your well written and articulate candidacy post and look forward to following you and the others in the campaign.
In addition to the general questions I ask of all candidates I have one specific to you (and may pose this to a couple others):
You are in a positiion of leadership in one of the top Corps / Alliances in the game. Much of the conversation in the forums relates to the disparity in ISK, PC, general opportunities between the small upper tier and everone else. Can you please elaborate on how you intend to represent the rest of the community, i.e. the other 90%? How we will know you aren't soley shaping things for the elites?
Here are a few specific questions for you (same as I pose to all candidates):
1) Other than the forums how do you intend to collect and communicate requests, needs, POV of the community? In particular, those outside your corp / alliance.
2) What level of interaction would you like to establish between the CPM and CSM?
3) What are the top 3 short term (next 2mo's) changes you would encourage CCP to make? I'm looking for concrete examples that are realistic to achieve.
4) What are the top 3 mid term (next 6mo's) changes you would encourage CCP to make?
5) In Spring of 2015, when CPM1's term is up, what would you want people to have said about your tenure as a CPM member?
6) Will you be creating a channel for folks to meet and sqd with you during the period before the election?
Thank you for your time.

The reward for their actions/battle escalates as they allow for added risk to be involved. I like choice when selecting Risk vs Reward. I have been thinking that it might be beneficial to add a minor league for Pub matches so that players can choose between higher risk with higher rewards, or lower risk with lower rewards.
From a Lore perspective the minor league would be NPC Corporations entering into a gentlemanGÇÖs agreement to settle disputes through the outcome of a staged battle. Could be Corporations belonging to the same faction. Or matches organized for the rich and powerful to bet on.
The Minor League matches would be restricted to Militia and Standard Gear. Anything higher than Meta 2 would make a fit invalid in this mode. The ISK payout and the skill points earned would be a third less than in the Major Leagues (unrestricted Pub matches).
This way new players could chose to take greater risks for higher rewards by playing in the major leagues, or play it safe in the minor leagues and accept a smaller payout.
To be fair to new players you could have both Leagues have the same payouts at first and have those payouts slowly drop to 2/3 for Minor League matches as either the playerGÇÖs Skill Points or War Points increase.
Yes, it would split the player base, but it is a separation that many have been asking for from the match maker system. It would mean that anyone facing Proto stompers would be accepting that risk. It would mean that when new players get slaughtered in the Minor Leagues they know it is due to skill and team work rather than equipment. It may even encourage new players to work together, and the benefits of coordination wonGÇÖt be masked by gear differences.

Jaysyn, Here are the answers to your questions..
Because just representing one subset of the playerbase does not help the game as a whole. In the Dusters Blog question thread, I stated that there needs to be a threefold approach to interesting and retaining players
-How should CCP attract new players -How should CCP retain new players once they have tried the game -How should CCP retain veteran players once they have played the game for a while
Everyone goes through these three points during their career in Dust. You cannot ignore any one of them without alienating them and driving them away from the game. If you think about these three things then you find rewarding options for veterans that allows them to move on which allows newer players environments of their own to grow and play against other new players
________________________________________ Here are a few specific questions for you (same as I pose to all candidates):
1) Other than the forums how do you intend to collect and communicate requests, needs, POV of the community? In particular, those outside your corp / alliance.
I will be available on the forums, through skype, via a specific email for CPM activities and can be reached via EVE.
2) What level of interaction would you like to establish between the CPM and CSM?
I believe that there needs to be some interaction between the two advising bodies in New Eden but that their goals should be focused on the platforms they are responsible for. There should be regular meetings to discuss the vision for how the two platforms should interact but their base responsibilities should not be forgotten.
3) What are the top 3 short term (next 2mo's) changes you would encourage CCP to make? I'm looking for concrete examples that are realistic to achieve.
The problem with the next two months is that CCP has already been in development for those changes for a while now. The job of the CPM is to advise on changes before the developers get to that point. I think that the short term goals for CCP should be to expand the new player experience in Dust beyond a short tutorial. It is complicated to say how I would want to steer CCP as I am not privy to their plans beyond what they have shared with their community. The initial task of the newly elected CPM should be to understand where CCP is taking this game and then understand how it will impact the playerbase.
What the CPM should push for to be immediate on CCPs development process are the further development of the NPE (especially with the possible influx of players due to the MAG server shutdowns) and the expansion of the VPE (veteran player experience) to move them away from a focus on pub games to give new players another avenue to grow. I feel that the failing of CCP over the past year has been that they have been focusing too much on the short term and lost sight of where this game needs to go.
4) What are the top 3 mid term (next 6mo's) changes you would encourage CCP to make? This is the same answer to my previous question. To expand on it someone, my belief of what the priorities of CCP should be are as follows (top down):
New Player Experience Veteran Player Experience Tightening the bond between Dust and New Eden Evolving Dust as a game Giving depth to the activities that can be done within the game Expanding on the meaning of what a sandcastle is in Dust Fine tuning the game
5) In Spring of 2015, when CPM1's term is up, what would you want people to have said about your tenure as a CPM member?
That I did not try to advocate for one particular player base. The success of the CPM as a whole should be in the evolution of Dust over the past year. That the game is continuing to grow and its playerbase as well.
6) Will you be creating a channel for folks to meet and sqd with you during the period before the election?
I will have a channel open to speak to players within the game. However, I would like for them to approach me with an issue via text of some sort (forum, email or skype) prior so that I can understand their issue and look into it before speaking to them personally.
Lastly, I would like to give some insight to players that is coming from a veteran and member of an active PC corporation. Many veterans do not like imbalance in the game and constant protostomps. It is boring and it leads to less enjoyment of the product itself. The issue is that there is nowhere for high sp/isk veterans to go beyond these pub matches. PC is in a very crude state now and battles are few and far between. I speak about the VPE because by expanding it, it gets vets and their protosuits out of simple pub games and gives them something to move on to.
Thank you for the chance to speak.

Killar, Here are the responses to your questions
In what ways would you wish to see the Connection between capsuleers and infantry expanded?
To truly develop a link between capsuleers and infantry, there needs to be a level of need generated on both sides. In an open world, you cannot force people to interact but you can make it beneficial for them to do so. To do that, you have to figure out what drivers there are for both sides that it would make it worth an interaction. The motivation for PC is acquisition of land and power and this should align to EVE players who want the same thing. Dust needs to expand beyond just that though. There needs to be options for players to interact with other career paths in Dust. That Dust corporations can choose to remain in high sec and aide in non PVP actions in EVE though for lesser reward.
How high on your list of priorities is having dust able to perform a constant framrate of say 30 FPS?
Game quality is a consistent issue within Dust and I, like many other players, would like to see it improved. However, as just a general player right now, I do not know how the PS3 might be a limiting factor in stabilizing framerate and what CCP can do given this.
Would you wish for the return of Corporation Battles or rather the introduction of Team Deploy for Factional warfare?
I do not believe that it should be an OR scenario. I think that the more that you can give mercs a chance to work together, the greater their enjoyment of the game. Corp battles is a great way for corps to prepare themselves for PC should that be their goal. It allows for competition at full scale and the ability to try out new tactics and learn what does and does not work.

Canari,
Thanks for the response - I definitely appreciate your perspective on managing the NPE to VPE continuum.
It's key that the CPM have deep understanding in high end gameplay for Dust, however, most of the player base doesn't fall into that bin...thus my concern. The CPM has to account for the perspectives of the entire community and often that's a difficult thing to manage.

Yes, it would split the player base, but it is a separation that many have been asking for from the match maker system anyway. It would likely increase player retention as it provides a more even playing field for new players, plus it generates the excitement of getting better gear so that some day you will be ready for the big leagues.
While I agree that risk/reward should separate players, I just dont think that pub matches are the medium for doing so. It is the basest form of gameplay and I think that focusing on it would only limit the future potential of the game. Again, my goal is to give incentive to move on to other aspects of the game rather than impose restrictions on players doing the same thing over and over. My fear is that it would only lead to boredom with the game and cause a loss of players as they plateau out.

The thing to remember is that every player was once a low SP/ISK newberry in this game. Only a select few were at the earliest stages to where they were always on top.
This game only grows with a strong and increasing playerbase. To not think about the experiences of all players is to risk the failure of the game we are trying to better.

From another thread...
Killar-12 wrote:Soraya Xel wrote:You have to have a hook, Canari. If a solo player steps into a team game, and is instantly obliterated, and has a bad time, why would he stick around to get invested? The NPE needs to push corps and squads, especially by suggesting, say, with Skirmish, that they should find a squad in the squad finder before entering that game mode. For a new player, it wouldn't be bad to put a one-time notification there, that it's a very squad-based game mode.
But even as someone who runs an alliance and participates in PC, sometimes I just want a nice fun match by myself. I don't want to squad up and chat with people. Right now, that leaves me with a poor experience. Solo play sucks. And given the number of solo players I see in the game, CCP not tailoring a portion of the game for them is leaving money on the table. first part yes second no Newbies need help I got 4 new members from SOCOM and a few others from MAG I am incredibly happy I have a staff of trainers in the corp. (aimed at Canari) It's odd dealing with people so new seriously ever squadded with someone new to dust?
I have and I will continue to do so. I create alts now and again to see what the game is like from a new player's point of view. Its the same with almost any game. Some are utterly confused and admit it while others automatically think they know everything. The amount of misinformation that gets passed around is amazing. New players are not prepared for what they face even within the first day of the game.
