So far as i have seen... Grenades can do 500+ damage, even MLT. Massdrivers can do about 20-30ish splash damage per shot. And other times on direct hits do about 50~ if you're lucky. As locus grenades are min,and massdrivers are min...i don't know why they aren't more effective. While using a massdriver i thought i could be a good 'area denial' unit...until the enemies realised the sounds of the explosions were more dangerous than the damage the shots actually delivered. A group of 4 players less than 3 meters apart charged at meee,i unloaded all 6 shots into the center of the group before getting gunned down. End result? About 25 damage for all 6 shots,i couldn't even take the 2 MLT fits running at meee down 30% of their SHIELDS.

Actually the lowest splash damage is 75 hp. Direct hits can do upwards of 400hp. Get better at reading and math.

I don't understand the crying about the Mass Driver. It might be that I've had extensive experience, but it's never been a TERRIBLE weapon. Even when it was super-gimped back in Uprising 1.2 or whatever, I could use it on my Gallente Logistics and dominate the field. The problem is, and it's not even a problem as much as it is something people don't understand, is that it takes a lot of skill to use in certain situations. Unless you do what Deadly does, and stack Complex Damage Mods with an Assault Mass Driver, you need to train with it a little bit for it to be very effective.
When I have my PS3 available to me again, I'll look at the Mass Driver. I'll run a Proto Mass Driver with 3 Basic Damage Mods on my Gallente Logistics (maybe 3 Enhanced, but Basics are more likely so I can fit my ADV Logi-Gear and Hives). I'll (maybe) post my K/D and other statistics here, along with scenarios where I worked really well, and scenarios where I think the Mass Driver SHOULD'VE done better, but didn't. Stay tuned. Maybe. Because I might forget about this thread all together. :P

Also, you might be using it wrong for it's intended role. Run this fit:
Gallente Medium Frame G/1-Series (ADV) 1x EX0-5 Mass Driver All high slots with Enhanced Damage Mods (yey) 1x Enhanced Armor Plate* 1x Enhanced Reactive Armor Plate* 1x Enhanced Armor Repairer* 1x Advanced Nanite Injector OR Remote Explosives** 1x Locus Grenade
I think I got the slot counts right there. I dunno.
*This blend of plates and reps will give you a good amount of HP, as well as a decent amount of regenerative capability. I never run an Assault fit of any kind without a similar setup to this. Even my Gallente Logistics has 2 Complex Plates, 2 Complex Reactives, and 1 Enhanced Armor Repairer (I don't have complex reps D:).
**Choice between Nanite Injector or Explosives is a choice between defensive and offensive. I suggest going with the Nanite Injector, as it will allow you to better be a defense and area denial fighter. I once held off an objective with my squad using a Mass Driver. Got a decent amount of kills, and if any of them died, I could bring them back up. If you use Explosives, however, you can be a little more aggressive about point defense. Place an RE on a doorway, wait for them to walk through, make them feel sorry for it. The downside is you can only do that for a short amount of time, unless you have a resupplier with you.
Run that. Don't focus on killing as much as you focus on defending from intruders and making sure your squad is kept alive. If you're in a city map, use a Mass Driver to flush them out of cover. Don't go for kills, go for either defense OR offense. But not killing offense. Does this make any sense?
1) Defend a point from above.
OR
2) Flush people out of a place so your squadmates can clean up the mess.

Allow me artificer. I have been a proto masshole since the day it came out. I can tell you right now the only thing downside to using a mass driver is ammo. The damage is great. I still often go 25/3 with a mass driver. anyone complaining about it needs to learn proper tactics for using it. There is a time and a place for it. And up close with 3 guys who have AR/SCR/RR/or CR is not that time. You will die every time.
Not everyone can use the mass driver. It takes a lot of skill to use.
Now to prove my point better i will use math. An assault mass driver has a fire rate of 1.1 rounds per second. That being said it can have a DPS of between 75-200. I should also add that mass drivers have a 20% reduction to damage on shields and a 20% buff to armor damage.
So now that we have the math out of the way lets talk DPS. If the round per second is 1.1 we can assume that our DPS is roughly one round worth of damage. Which for a direct hit can be up to 400 Hp (on the breach variants) So with a DPS of 75-400 we can see a huge disparity. While It is not as high DPS as most other guns which fall in the range of 600-900.
So we can see that the Dps of the mass driver is half of most rifles. Yes that is quite a bit smaller but does that make it a worse weapon . No. It does not make it a worse weapon because it has abilities that rifles do not. Those abilities would very easily become over powered if there was any buff to damage done by the mass driver. If you are wondering what those abilities are they are massive range huge splash radii and an arced firing trajectory. These make it a very powerful weapon. If you doubt this you have obviously never been against me while I was using my M/D.
The mass driver is an area denial weapon. It is extremely effective at keeping enemies at bay. Especially when coupled with flux grenades. It is also best suited for logis as they are often behind their own team giving them close range protection and the ability to herd enemies into traps. By being behind your team you can effectively resupply and heal your team mates while setting traps. It is a great support weapon and a terrible offensive weapon. Knowing the different roles for specific guns is extremely important and quite frankly as long as you people do not figure it out I can pad my KDR by simply out thinking you. Again read the art of war.

Most weapons don't need a buff or a nerf. Just a little tweak here and there until it-s balanced like what your suggesting here. This makes since.

More than 1 damage mod is trivial because of your inability to remove shields from the equation. And the way Heavies, Assaults, and Commandos are going to be in 1.8, using more than 1 is going to become foolish as well.
I would love to have the smoke effect from the MD come back. With AA and hit detection fixed, there is currently no excuse to stop the MD from using the smokescreen. |

Considering it's only going to be useful against half the suits in the game 1.8, it should be only useful on certain maps against certain suits? |

I have Proto and find them pretty terrible even at that level. They used to be a defensive weapon with some offensive ability. Now they are noise makers.

These are some very bogus numbers
Even if you nerfed the Assault MD splash damage by 25 points the least damage you could deal would be 40 unless CCP finally implemented a radius falloff which I doubt.

If the rifles are nerfed as planned next build, things might not be so bad.
However, it's ridiculous to expect people to spend millions of SP and deal with high fitting reqs for a weapon that's only effective in some situations and then only good for taking out links/hives the rest of the time. Of course we don't want MD spamfests either. Although that was only a problem when hit detection for rifles was shite. I actually quit using it during that build.
So what I think is needed is: A clips worth of extra ammo and direct damage increase. Perhaps about 10% more DD while leaving splash radius and damage as it currently is.
That way, noobs can't spam it with too much splash damage and Massholes can have a chance when enemies get too close if their aim is good enough. It will also result in better area denial ability since players will want to avoid any kind of direct hits without the splash being over powered.
I think this would be the best balance for the weapon.

Exactly this +1
I would even leave the DD the same, if they increased the fire rate of the Breach to that of the standard MDs. That would make the Breach the "Massholes" MD because he knows how to aim. Also make all MD's have 8 rounds in the clip with the same amount of clips = 24 rounds.
I don't use the assault MD, since it's a spam weapon, and it's hard to use it whenever friendly fire is on.
