Around two months back I skilled into shotguns, knives and the Gallante Scout suit. I did it because I could no longer fight effectively with the Swarm Launcher and Minmatar Assault I had earlier.
I thought it was going to be incredibly hard, considering how much people complain. Though, I find them surprisingly easier to operate in. This is because of Scanners. I don't care how good you are, or say you are, you won't survive against 6 players with proto gear that are all chasing you down because they scanned you. This is especially true if you play solo like I do.
Now everytime I play something that is not a scout suit I get scanned and completely murdered by 3+ guys shooting me at the same time. Yet I can walk right around them in a scout suit and survive, and even shotgun them all down before they even see me. My Proto Minmatar Suit with 3 the HP can't even get half as many kills as my standard scout suit.
So much for Scouts not being viable

But you will need to sacrifice two low slots to run dampeners and two more to a cardiac regulator and kinetic catalyzer. And yet, you still will not match me in jumping ability, nor profile dampening and you will never match me in walking speed. Also, at top levels I will get better dampening by running one standard dampener than you could with running three Complex; I would have more slots and more CPU/PG to run armor and damage modifiers.
And come 1.8, I will automatically avoid advanced scanners.

I was going to run the Minmatar Scout as it would allow me to run more armor. This is because I can run an Enhanced Armor mod and Enhanced Reactive Plate and still be faster than the Gallante Scout.
I decided against it because I would need to run dampeners anyway so that would not allow me to effectively armor tank while maintaining stealth. I don't think the Minmatar Scout is bad because of HP I think it is bad because:
Stealth > Speed

my std gallente scout at gall scout 3 with just FCKN MILLITA DAMPNER BITCHES. gets underneath adv scanners.
not to many people use the proto one but if they due i use my 'ahem'' aurm scout gko with dual enchanced proflie damps to go below.
scouts that use buffer are dead scouts scouts that use dampening are win.

When I come up against full 6 man proto scanner squad, I pull out my amarr assault viziam 3 dmg mod and reck face. Sure I'm on their radar, but I usually still out play them and use my blues as meat shields.
On city maps though, This doesn't work :( so I pull out scout and do better

Try some PC in a scout suit and see how far you get.
Scouts are not competitive. It is a lot different when there is only one full proto squad in a pub Vs. an entire proto team in PC. Scout does fine in pubs against a buch of std and adv gear and poorly fit protos, but you'll quickly get slaughtered in PC.

My beef is the scout vs. map design. Crossing open areas is like...nope
But scout suits are the greatest lonewolf suits hands down, due to stealth and omniscience. However I'll be damned if I come across any more dampened Assault C.k0s. They are the bane of a scout as well as other scouts....and HMGs.

I need only one militia dampener to avoid proto scans except focused which are terribly biased against a scout. No scout should need 4 complex dampeners.... But honestly I have enhanced plated scouts and they have a relatively high armor count for a scout so it's like running a ***** stealth medium frame which is honestly much easier than running no HP scouts. My no HP fits are effective but hyper-niche, the moment I'm caught out in the open is the moment I am dead.

The problem here really is that people are relying on their scanners too much now, even the protostompers who use prototype scanners rely solely on the information it provides. When you have invested into the scout suits and profile dampening to avoid these scanners, it suddenly gets a lot easier to sneak behind enemies.
Seeing those bright glowing red dots on the map seem to be really mesmerizing, making everyone chase them and ignore everything else. If you know your way around maps, getting behind red dots who are focusing on your buddies starts getting really easy. Even if their teammates are dying right behind them, they keep firing at your buddies, allowing you to slaughter everyone before they even realize what's going on.
Added with the fact that scouts can never be passively scanned unless you're using ridicilous complex precision enhancer fits, I could run around red dots and they will never see me coming unless they point their crosshairs at me. Heck, I've had times when I've walked right past red dots and they ignored me completely, because I wasn't showing up red on their radar or tacnet. The problem really lies in the fact that even with all of this, investing in profile dampening, learning the maps and taking all the effort to sneak behind enemies, as soon as someone sees you you're dead.
And really, the issue isn't that scouts aren't hard to use when you've invested enough skills into them, it's the fact that how much effort it takes before you can get there. When you have to invest over 4 million SP to your scout skills and profile dampening, and sacrifice health/utility modules to avoid advanced scanners, a logi can just invest under a million SP and use one of their equipment slots to use a proto scanner, forcing you to use even more SP to max out your scout suits and dampening.

Since when has the minmatar assault become obsolete? I've regularly been getting 25-30 kills and <10 deaths... and a bad game has me only slightly over a 1:1 ratio. Is this a bad result? or are you just suggesting I'd do much better with a scout |

well i used for a very long time a minmatar light frame (not the racial) and you should really try that. compared to that, gal racial scout is super ez mode! u get scanned like everyone else or u sacrifice All your lows for dampers and criple your already low CPU even more with that (and still get scanned sometimes)....not able to run a weapon above adv on a proto suit cause of your limited resources... dying in a blink of an eye (in proto suit) cause you have less ehp than a proto nanohive and losing a lot of isk since your suits are even more expensive than a racial suit.. even though i mostly used adv min light frame (still damn expensive for it's crappy performance). so dont talk so high of yourself and what little whiners we all are...there are (were) reasons for the complains... |

The Gallente scout gives you all around bonuses to both profile dampening and passive scan range. I have an alt standing by that has moderately high passive scan range on a Gallente Scout Gk.0 and I can already see up to 60 meters with just enhanced range amps.
And since passive scanning at that level makes active scanners unnecessary for the Scout Gk.0, I can see every suit in the field except another scout. There is also the additional benefit of NOT alerting the enemy since passive scanning doesn't reveal your position in any way. The Gallente Scout is a triple threat.

Also, I think that the buff to scout slots has more to do with the buffs that are being done to the other suit classes.
All assaults are getting RoF increase + buffer increase or increase to damage output (Minmatar).
All sentinels are getting a huge resistance increase.
Commandos are getting a damage output increase.
You can't do these kind of buffs and just leave the scouts the way they are. I still have reservations that the scout buff may not be enough given the magnitude of the buffs to the other classes. Only time will tell.

is there a noticable difference in dmg increase (or TTK) with the dmg mods?
i dont use dmg mods and i'm just curios.... and i hope scouts wont be the next FOTM, cause i like the challenge being a scout.
with the new updates the good scouts will still do fine (& change their playstyles to overcome the changes) and the dumb crappy ones (like me lol) which refuse to adapt & overcome probaly get stomped and frustrated :/ |

I kinda had the same thing, after SL becoming almost useless I went rail rifle/slayer logi, but it started to bore me.
By accident I got in a squad with MakiMaki from NyanSan, seeing him how he was murdering people in a scout suit and hear him explain how he runs it.
I thought like why not I still got like 70 black eagle's, lets try it. I thought I would be gang raped with only 300 EHP. I actually did way better and in general I'm getting way more kills as a scout then my slayer fits with over 700 EHP.
I dont have any points in scout suits so after I ran out of black eagle's, I bought the LP min basic scout suit and LP gal basic shotty. With just the basic suit and no skillpoints in scout suits and just an advanced dampner I barely get scanned.
If we get a respecc I'll definitly gonna put some points into a cal scout.
Scouts are badass, just dont go face-to-face with a heavy

IF some Scout invest all his sp in to dampening - it work for him temporary, as soon he is spotted, he is dead. If Assault invest all his sp in to tanking skills, as soon he is spotted, he have plenty time to defend himself.
Skills are not equal to other skills in this game.
