We all know CCP is currently working to release the new armors and some new weapons in order to bring the balance to New Eden, so all races have light, medium and heavy frames along with racial weapons.
But I'm looking forward...
Right now, every mercenary who starts fighting has little to none knowledge of what he's doing.
NEW PLAYERS All new characters will start with 0 SP, passive SP disabled and 0 ISK. Don't worry, you will receive your starting 500,000 SP later along with some money.
M.O.U.T. (Military Operation in Urban Terrain) I can't believe there is no base training in this game.. Every new character will attend basic training, a "scripted" map where you will learn:
- BASIC MOVEMENT
- - Walk and run
- - Jump, climb stairs and using dumpners
- WEAPONS TRAINING
- - Fire and reload
- - Resupply and change outfit
- VEHICLES
- - LAV driving
- - HAV driving
- - Dropshis piloting
- COMMANDS
- - Attack, Defend, Conquer and Regroup orders
- - Warbarge strike
- EQUIPMENTS
- - Nanohives
- - Armor repairer
- - Drop uplinks
- - Nanite Injectors
The first part takes place inside a building, where you have to follow the path to reach the exit. The second part takes place in a firing range with some Depots to allow the player to resupply and to test multiple weapons. To further familiarize with shields and armors, some targets return fire with a special AR, whose bullets deal 3 HP damage instead of 34 HP. The third part takes place in an open field, where you drive the first two vehicles and later by piloting a dropship above some mountains to reach the next area. The fourth part takes place in a fictional combat zone, where there are two BOT squads, 5 allies and 5 enemies, and you become the squad leader as soon as you reach a specific spot (high ground), from where you can easily aim to each objective (defend A, attack enemy OBJ, conquer C, regroup at landmark X). Finally, you're given the opportunity to call a Warbarge strike aiming to a specific location/target. The final part takes place in a long hallway, where you change outfit using a mk.0 (or gk.0) Logistic frame outfitted with the 4 equipments, and you use them one by one. Once you have learnt the basis, you can reach the EXIT to finish the MOUT.
Now you can deploy into test battles: they are almost the same as now, with the difference you can't use anything else than MLT gear (now you can spend SP and gain access to ADV weapons or armors, or even buy tanks or dropships). Each character must reach 6,000 WP and win at least 4 battles to graduate.
Once you have completed the MOUT, won at least 4 battles and reached 6,000 WP, you are rewarded with 500,000 SP + 2.000 SP for each battle you took part into + all the WP you gained; you're also rewarded with enough ISK to buy what you need + all the ISK you earned for each battle.
BEGINNING Now that new characters are ready to deploy into real battles and face much stronger enemies, they receive another very important bonus: GÇó each WP earnt in battle will give you 3x SP until you reach 5,000,000 SP Below I've written down some examples GÇó When you reach 10,000,000 SP, your weekly SP limit is raised to 240,000 SP (with a +50,000). GÇó When you reach 20,000,000 SP, your weekly SP limit is raised to 290,000 SP (another +50,000). GÇó When you (eventually) reach 30,000,000 SP, your weekly SP limit is raised to 340,000 SP. In this way both new and old players are very encouraged to play more, where the first ones can get more points than usual, and the other ones will need to play more in order to collect all the available weekly SP. About the weekly SP amount, I've been thinking for several days what could be done: without a weekly limit, one player could theorically play restlessly for a month and obtain more SP than anyone else; but since too many old players are reporting they reach the 190,000 SP too early, I've realized that raising that number is the best option so far.
SP BOOSTERS The SP Boosters are another hot topic here, a couple of days ago someone revived a very old discussion yelling that the weekly or montly SP boosters are useless because collecting 190,000 SP requires no more than 3 days, so the other 96 hours are useless (week version ofc).
I have 3 possible solutions:
1) the Booster is based on the WP earnt in battle: you must reach a minimum amount of WP to have it working: let's say for example 200 WP. Also, unlike now, the new Boosters are SP-based instead of time-based, which means they will work until you deplete the amount of extra SP given. They keep working as they do now, meaning every 2 SP you'll gain 1 extra one from the offered pool. So, if you leave the battle or you remain on the MCC camping, you won't gain any bonus. The SP pools are: 100,000 SP / 200,000 SP and 500,000 SP (not sure about a possible 1M SP booster...)
2) the SP Boosters remain just like they are right now, but the timer works only when deployed in battle. I recognize this would still make matches after the "cap" quite useless, still you wouldn't waste the booster.
3) the SP Boosters remain just like they are right now, but you can activate/deactivate it whenever you want. Since it's a fairly exploitable use, I was thinking adding a sort of time-based penalty, something like "-60 minutes for every activation except the first one".
I'll add more considerations later.
Examples of SP/WP Boosting for new players with less than 5,000,000 SP: EARNT in battle .................................. SP only ...... WP w/ bonus ..... TOTAL GÇó 3,000 total SP (500 WP) become GåÆ 2,500 SP + 1,500 WP = 4.000 SP (+33%) GÇó 5,000 total SP (1,000 WP) become GåÆ 4,000 SP + 3,000 WP = 7,000 SP (+40%) GÇó 6,000 total SP (2,000 WP) become GåÆ 4,000 SP

I love it. I sometimes wish they'd give qualifying players their own 'Dev kit', the players work on w/e they feel, send it back, and CCP analyzes it, does a bit of q/a, then builds it into the game, in exchange for awardin the contributing player(s) a few BPC's. Like 100 of 6 different items.

Your weekly skillpoint cap idea is completely backwards. cap needs to be higher for new players. The current cap is supposed to stop hardcore players from putting to much sp distance between themselves and more casual players.
What it actually does is limit new players from catching up with people who already have 10-20-30milliom sp. At 30million you don't need a skillpoint boost. The new guys need to be able to put some time in and get some decent skills to try and compete.
should be much higher for new players and lower overtime as their lifetime sp goes up. |

CCP already has a better scheme for SP which involves you having an sp pool that grows over time, so no sp cap persay since your pool will just keep growing allowing you to earn that sp whenever you feel like playing. Boosters will simply increase the speed your SP pool accumulates.
As far as new players may of us have demanded a better NPE for a very long time. CCP has slowly improved to too but it still has a ways to go. A more explicit tutorial teaching about hacking points and how to win matches would go a long way towards supporting player growth.

That's why players with less than 5,000,000 SP get a permanent bonus on their WP. Raising their cap is not very useful since you can't know if they'll keep playing for enough time, or enough to reach the week limit. Also, remember that since they mostly use MLT gear they'll be dead meat for most of the time. And this is very bad. Let them reach 5 M SP fast so they can setup something decent to fight in a reasonable way

That's some bad news, PvE should be implemented somehow. Yet, what I suggested is a bunch of BOTs which do the same thing over and over, no need for some serious AI. And as for the firing range targets, you can probably apply the AI used for fixed turrets

I think that the basic movement tutorial should happen in your merc quarters. Then you start the PvE Tutorial which teaches you all the basics in battle, crouch, shoot, switch weapons, grenade, hack drop uplink/nanohive, etc. WHen youve completed the PvE tutorial you go into the Academy, like new players do now, to learn the difference between PvE and PvP. At a certain number of SP or WP, you get out into the general population.
How the weapons work are fine as they are, sure there's bugs to fix and balancing to do, but different levels of weapons fits with EVE where you get various Tech 1 types, Officer and faction types then Tech 2's (Of all modules in fact, not just weapons)
I would like to see different ammo types, but that's not a necessity for me.
Dropsuits and vehicles are good as well, again, bug fixes and balancing, of course.
At least that's just my thoughts. I'm sure people either agree or disagree with me and some of you might even say so either way.
When I play as a sniper, I'm more likely to be nearer to the opponents redline than my own.

My response and criticism:
M.O.U.T is an excellent idea. Every FPS whether it be on the console, PC, or handheld controls completely different. Being able to just spend a couple minutes getting used to the control before one team or another starts getting slaughtered is desperately needed. Teaches them to shoot the gun, how to move, and can even teach the veteran players how to do things like fly a dropship.
Your SP changes are, as others have said, completely and totally backwards. The last thing the developers want is "I play more, so I get more SP." This is already true as 1,000 WP = 1,000 SP. Miniscule but it adds up. Say you play an extra 30 games a week after cap. That's 30k SP. Given a month, 120k. A year, 1,440,000 SP. Skill Points do far, far more in this game than extra levels do in Call of Duty. Someone with 9 million in a specific role will beat someone hands down with 3 million in that role. Increasing the SP gap is not a great idea.
Once CCP actually adds the rollover system, having an Active Booster on will increase the bonus you gain as well as giving you bonus after a match so the booster thing will fix itself.
I have too much vested interest in Tanks (14 million of my 20 million SP) to comment fairly on the gunner being it's own position as it isn't a balance update but a complete overhaul that would leave me incapable of doing my chosen role.
Weapon customization is pretty interesting. EVE has these things called Scripts that could do the same thing. For example, say you have a module that increases your targeting speed by 10% and your targeting distance by 10%. There would be a Script that could go into the module that would change the stats. Maybe it would go from 10%/10% to 15%/0 or 0/20%. I forget the actual numbers as I have not played EVE in years but the concept is there. There isn't too much need to customize everything to the smallest degree like weapon scopes, grips, etc, as your character fitting and your SP is your customization. Call of Duty would have more weapon customization/modification as it is the only actual customization in those games, aside from choose 3 perks (but one is going to be Stopping Power and another is going to be Commando).
Imagine a new player that logs on to DUST, never playing EVE or DUST before, and sees their character sheet. "Okay, I can put points where ever I want." "Oh, look! I can also fit my guy with stuff. What, why can't that thing go there? High Slot, Low Slot, equipment? Okay, that's a little weird." "Wait, now I have to do the same thing for my gun now?!" There is a disadvantage in having too much customization...
I do like the idea of starting new players with zero, sip, nada SP. Each training tutorial they finish will reward them with a 50,000-100,000 SP. This is incredibly important as every starting player would probably think that it is easy to get SP as, well, they started you with 500,000. No other game I have seen, even EVE, is as unforgiving of completely wet-behind-the-ears new player as DUST. I read online that one player was in a terrible situation because he put all his points into Turrets because he thought Tanks spawned on the map like Battlefield. It is easy to make a massive mistake like that. Giving the SP over an extended period of time would limit that opportunity. Hell, even Hearthstone makes you play a deck to level 10 before giving you all the basic cards so you can learn how the class in question works. |

I understand that this tuning looks unbalanced, but remember that old players need more SP than the new ones, because advanced skill levels require even 1 M SP, and not everyone is willing to save and save (and save) SP until they eventually reach their goal. Giving an higher SP cap offers them the freedom to keep playing, but nowhere on Earth they are forced to collect those points, that's why new characters receive that WP/SP bonus. I initially considered even giving a 4x boost, but I realized that would doubled the SP in too many ways: since they are allowed to use a 3 days booster they would gather even more SP (I'll do some math if you ask me). There is a Corp member with > 40,000,000 SP and he still demands to get more.
Joseph Ridgeson wrote:I have too much vested interest in Tanks (14 million of my 20 million SP) to comment fairly on the gunner being it's own position as it isn't a balance update but a complete overhaul that would leave me incapable of doing my chosen role.
I know that tank pilots will hate me for my suggestions, but what is totally unfair right now is DUST v.1.8: please count how many matches you have done so far where no HAVs were ever called. My answer most likely is "NONE". DUST is based on infantry warfare, where tanks appear as extremely useful support; a tank-based game is something entirely different, and I don't think that CCP wanted this for their PS3 game... Does using a tank have a drawback? None I can think of it (some could say "You can't hack NULL cannons", but with 15 more players is not a real issue until they all start driving around in their HAVs). Really, how can someone consider the current tanks "balanced" for DUST gameplay?
Joseph Ridgeson wrote:Weapon customization is pretty interesting. {...}

Mmm... I see what you're thinking... yes, forcing people to customize everything may become boring in the long run. Ok, CCP could add some "pre-fitted" weapons which would basically be the current ADV and PRO versions of each weapon, so you don't have to manually change/check everything. IF you want to do that, you'll get even deeper immersion, otherwise you can still quickly setup your outfit.
Joseph Ridgeson wrote:I do like the idea of starting new players with zero, sip, nada SP. Each training tutorial they finish will reward them with a 50,000-100,000 SP. {...}
I must really dissent here: the purpose of not giving any SP until each soldier "graduates" is to prevent them from tossing their SP in some stupid way; another point is to reduce the massive clone-killing where someone (everyone) creates a new character, transfers the money from secondary to main account and then kills him just to rinse and repeat it 10 hours later. With the new system, you'll have to complete the MOUT everytime and play around 8~10 battles before you can obtain the starting ISKs.
