My response and criticism:
M.O.U.T is an excellent idea. Every FPS whether it be on the console, PC, or handheld controls completely different. Being able to just spend a couple minutes getting used to the control before one team or another starts getting slaughtered is desperately needed. Teaches them to shoot the gun, how to move, and can even teach the veteran players how to do things like fly a dropship.
Your SP changes are, as others have said, completely and totally backwards. The last thing the developers want is "I play more, so I get more SP." This is already true as 1,000 WP = 1,000 SP. Miniscule but it adds up. Say you play an extra 30 games a week after cap. That's 30k SP. Given a month, 120k. A year, 1,440,000 SP. Skill Points do far, far more in this game than extra levels do in Call of Duty. Someone with 9 million in a specific role will beat someone hands down with 3 million in that role. Increasing the SP gap is not a great idea.
Once CCP actually adds the rollover system, having an Active Booster on will increase the bonus you gain as well as giving you bonus after a match so the booster thing will fix itself.
I have too much vested interest in Tanks (14 million of my 20 million SP) to comment fairly on the gunner being it's own position as it isn't a balance update but a complete overhaul that would leave me incapable of doing my chosen role.
Weapon customization is pretty interesting. EVE has these things called Scripts that could do the same thing. For example, say you have a module that increases your targeting speed by 10% and your targeting distance by 10%. There would be a Script that could go into the module that would change the stats. Maybe it would go from 10%/10% to 15%/0 or 0/20%. I forget the actual numbers as I have not played EVE in years but the concept is there. There isn't too much need to customize everything to the smallest degree like weapon scopes, grips, etc, as your character fitting and your SP is your customization. Call of Duty would have more weapon customization/modification as it is the only actual customization in those games, aside from choose 3 perks (but one is going to be Stopping Power and another is going to be Commando).
Imagine a new player that logs on to DUST, never playing EVE or DUST before, and sees their character sheet. "Okay, I can put points where ever I want." "Oh, look! I can also fit my guy with stuff. What, why can't that thing go there? High Slot, Low Slot, equipment? Okay, that's a little weird." "Wait, now I have to do the same thing for my gun now?!" There is a disadvantage in having too much customization...
I do like the idea of starting new players with zero, sip, nada SP. Each training tutorial they finish will reward them with a 50,000-100,000 SP. This is incredibly important as every starting player would probably think that it is easy to get SP as, well, they started you with 500,000. No other game I have seen, even EVE, is as unforgiving of completely wet-behind-the-ears new player as DUST. I read online that one player was in a terrible situation because he put all his points into Turrets because he thought Tanks spawned on the map like Battlefield. It is easy to make a massive mistake like that. Giving the SP over an extended period of time would limit that opportunity. Hell, even Hearthstone makes you play a deck to level 10 before giving you all the basic cards so you can learn how the class in question works. |
