I run either a combat logi fit or medic logi fit but can proto min or cal assault and with 2 other other alts I can adv or proto everything. I also have a tanker alt. 
Have av and sniper logi fits on this char as well. You are right but for new players its best to specialise until they can effectively make alternate load outs I believe.

That's fine if you have the SP to do it. Specialsing in one role first makes it so you can be effective in at least one role. Once you've got a specialisation you can generalise and not worry about hurting the team along the way.
I've specialised at sniper rilfes, but then have put SP into AR and RR as well
When I play as a sniper, I'm more likely to be nearer to the opponents redline than my own.
