I resurected my laser fit for 45 minutes then deleted it.
It sucks when you have laser proficiency five/three complex damage mods and go 1 and 10.
When you can get more kills with a militia weapon instead of a maxxed out laser.
When you press R1 and the entire battlefield just pauses and looks about like lol!! easy kills.
When someone using basic nova knifes gets more kills than you managed with a "proto" laser.
Using a laser forcibly reminds you why you quit playing Dust 1.7 and why even a 45 minute sample in 3X SP week was a bad idea.
When an "Academy" graduate starter fit kills you with a basic rail rifle then sends you a text asking why you are using such a bad weapon(laser)....

Jeez Tech! How were you using it? That's... pretty bad. I've been doing fine with it lately, it took me a couple of hours to get back into the Laser Rifle mindset, but I've been pulling good numbers. You shouldn't use the PRO or ADV Lasers. They are fixing it (so CCP Remnant says), but until they do, stick to the Standard one.

Were you getting in a good perch? It doesn't work well at the run 'n gun that the other rifles can do, its a VERY Amarrian weapon and wants you to hunker down somewhere to defend a position... Maybe if you get back on sometime when I'm playing I'll help you get back into the Laser Groove.

Hint: today I went up versus five users that were only about lasers since closed beta. And what weapons were they using? RR and CR.
I was using the laser at "long range" along with a scanner. Just wanted to see how bad the laser performed versus railrifles, scrambler rifles and combat rifles.
The laser no longer has a usable niche. It is possible to kill starterfits with the laser. And thats it.
There is no laser groove to get into versus semicapable users of scamblers, CR or RR. These weapons have better range, optimals and damage than the laser.
I am undecided whats top of the useless heap since its either the massdriver or the laser for that spot.
Speaking of useless weapons I noticed that I was the only HMG heavy. Then I changed out the HM-82 for a combat rifle and viola!!! easy kills!!
There must be some magic instaskillup in the rail rifles and the combat rifles ??
Tomorrow I will try out the same fits only using combat rifles and rail rifles instead.
I suspect my KDR will improve.

1st game with my basic laser on my 3dmg mod amarr assault vs nyain squad ambush match I went 20/1
It's all bout positioning. Every game after ward I got less than 10 kills but rarely died. It is a hard weapon to go slayer with but I think it's dmg output at its optimal is pretty good. Except when you meet a kallikiota RR..

IMHo, lasers are best used moving from weaker to stronger targets, as the heat buildup by the end of the first kill is sufficient enough to quickly take down that stupid heavy/GalLogi. Of course, this is assuming that they do not spot you

you spent 5 minutes to flank a group of reds. for a perfect shot at optimal range, only to get mowed down by a RR in under a second at 94 meters .. |

In all the games today I was the only laser user but I did manage to see three core flaylock users...lol!!
Thats the problem with being a longtime laser user. I use my laser and manage 1 kill.....one kill!! then enemy folks go oh!! theres Tech!! so out come the kalakiota railrifles.
Not that it matters since massdrivers are also just meh!! for results and trying to use shotguns is kind of fail with all the scanners so it looks like its either give in and run RR or CR or just continue to skip playing dust until either 1.8 fixes things or I get a solid launch date on PS2.

Stay away from areas with lots of cover and NEVER go inside the city or compound unless you know what you're doing with the laser or you have a very good sidearm with you. Or just face the fact that maybe the laser rifle just doesn't suit your playstyle.

My playstyle is 80m to 100m but the problem is that the laser optimal dies after 85m(1% damage at higher ranges) and the RR has no such limitation in the 85m to 100m. This is kind of the same conversation as when telling Duvolle AR users that they needed to get in closer to the then OP TAC AR users.

I dont use the LR... but my brother does....
He went 15/0, 17/2, 16/3 last night... and regually does very well with it. You have to THINK when using it (shocker) and a scanner helps. He uses an Amarr assault, and his main problem is that damn rail rifle, but that just messes everything up at the moment so \o/
TBH it does need tweeking... but your just bad.... for shame...
The answer is "ForgeGun"... doesnt matter what the question is...

I've nearly hit my cap during this event (3-day omega booster pressure yo!) and the entire time I've been running an advanced Commando with a standard laser rifle, no proficiency, just an enhanced damage mod. I've had great success, killed many enemies and many protos with it. No problems at all except perhaps when engaging rail rifles it can be tricky since they out range you easily, but that should be getting fixed in 1.8.

If the range was the problem then others along with myself wouldn't be able to go 16/3 and what not. Haven't you seen the thread where some guy was saying the LR's range should be drastically increased with the CCP Dev later posting in that same thread that they wanted to hot-fix it next week or so? Then turning out it would be harder to accomplish as primarily thought so instead of hot-fixing it next week he said they were planning to fix it in release of 1.8.

Right now everyone wants that bonus so at minimal risk....so those of you saying 17/0 and 15/2.....its probably all mlt suits of people trying to be cheap
The laser needs a couple things..... 1 greater zoom.....its a long range sniper-esque weapon but we get a low zoom red dot....wtf
2 increased optimal range...I heard somewhere that its optimal is 60-84m....that needs to be 55-120m
3 I understand less damage the closer you are but this needs to be tuned back a little.....I'd say it does 50-60% damage until optimal
4 this one sounds farfetched but just give it a try and there wont need to be DMG buffs......get rid of the reload all together....this enables the lr user to flutter the heat on the weapon longer and provides more opportunities for kills.....then make each tier have more ammo and less overheat buildup and voila you've fixed the tiers
5 this Is just for fun.....at super close range have it do massive dmg .....kinda like using the disruption on the front as a boyonette......it would make the lr a neat alternative to nova knives on scouts

if the rail is going to supplant the LR as the longest range 'cqc' rifle then perhaps it needs a better drawback than it currently has?

The rail rifle isn't supposed to be a CQC weapon at least not the regular version, hinted by the fact that it has a zoomed scope. It's supposed to be a medium ranged rifle, but because the spool up time is so short it doesn't really have an effect up close. So you're right that maybe the rail rifle needs a better drawback, for starters I'd say increase the spool up time or maybe decrease the effeciency rating when aiming at a target up close. I know that, might not make complete sense but really alot of things in this game don't make sense kinda like how one tank can drive over another tank as if it was a bump in the road, or how dropships don't explode until they hit the ground. That's just my opinion though.
