I too have been curious. Has Dust 514's Business Model brought in any money and made a profit?
I think CCP could potentially make alot more money buy selling permanent items (like the BPOs which they just decided to get rid of). Offering custom skins and the ability to buy a custom paintjob for your suits would, in my opinion, make CCP alot of money.
Spending money on a consumable virtual good that is lost each battle doesn't make me want to spend any money. |

Boosters are probably the only worthwhile investments in Dust as they are the only item that stays with your character (gets you SP at a quicker rate which stays with your character)

ccp works on the assumption that a game will be successful eventually if you put enough work into it. I kind of assume that dust 514 is out performing their planned growth. |

CCP seems to be smart in how they manage their finances and have kept themselves profitable. They aren't raking in major cash profits but they aren't hemorrhaging it either. They won't write off DUST until they finish it, market it and then see it fail. We still have some time. However, I'm betting that Valkyrie makes a big splash leaving DUST to be the smallest published title.

I did some basic calculations based on some assumptions a while back (maybe the pro forum warriors out there can find the thread) that led me to believe that CCP are losing money on Dust, but that it would be covered by just a few thousand Eve subscriptions.
If CCP were thinking about Dust as a stand-alone game then they'd almost certainly probably pull the plug.
But they aren't. Dust is simply one of a number of "clients" that people will be able to use to enter the New Eden universe. From that perspective the economics are very different. The mere fact that Dust exists helps to keep Eve subscriber numbers up.
CCP know that the lifetime of any one game, even one as successful and long-running as Eve, is limited. There's not really a lot they can do to change that. The New Eden game universe, however, can potentially last forever.
So no, Dust probably isn't profitable. But New Eden, including the PS3 FPS client which we call Dust, most certainly is.

It is most likely generating enough money to justify its existence; which is amazing considering just how little advertising CCP has done. Give the devs a chance to add more dropsuits, weapons, vehicles, maps, PvE, and game modes and it will be a gem of a F2P game. Take that gem and put even a small advertising campaign behind it and watch some serious money roll in.
In my mind, I can see CCP releasing Dust 514 a little too early on purpose. It's 60% playable in its current state, enough to make people play a few hours a week. Meanwhile, the devs continue to work on content and a trickle of money comes in. CCP gets to monitor player data for tens of thousands of hours instead of just hundreds like a during a beta. It's kind of genius really.
Somewhere around version 2.0 - 2.2 we will have the real launch day for Dust 514. Then it will go from "paying for itself" to really profitable.

Well I am surprised in the fact that most people I know and play with seem to always have boosters running. I recently bought a few boosters on my main for this event.
Its not much but it helps to keep money rolling in for CCP. The game is really starting to shape up. Granted it still has some quite big problems right now but overall I am a lot more content with the game than I was about 2-4 months ago. |

Lets say they have 20 staff on $100k a year and 20 staff on $50k a year (grotesque underestimation). That's $3 mil a year in basic cheques written for salaries, nothing else.
If we have 3,000 concurrent players, we can be generous and assume that means 30k real account holders. That means $100 a year each if everyone buys stuff or $1,000 per year if only 10% of the account holders are dedicated enough in a F2P game.
Unless they are paying Chinese granny sweatshop rates with programmers earning $5k a year there is not even the slightest possibility Dust is breaking even. |

The only valuable item is the Passive booster. With the skill cap if you are any good at this game you can reach the limit without the active booster in a reasonable amount of time.
I don't believe that buying perishable items will be a long term viable market strategy. In other games I've spent $50 to buy a single ship (total over $300). I've only spent $30 on this game and $20 was to get into beta and $10 was to get an Exile AR.
To make the game profitable CCP will have to bring Blueprints back...but maybe with a crafting mechanism. So blueprints would allow you to make special items that requires a reduced isk cost but maybe add wreckage/building materials to offset the cost. |

I'm trying to remember who suggested that this was being at least partially paid for by Chinese EVE subscribers on Serenity. Because the money can't leave China because of their financial regs or something.

If it is, I can't imagine it's a large margin. I'd say it's mostly being supported by Eve Online until the player base increases enough to get a constant income.
I don't think this thread is meant to be "Well this is a good deal", or "I'd never buy that". More of a query.

What do you mean by the bolded part? Active Boosters add 50% to your cap and your gain, they don't shorten the cap.
Anywho, what I gathered from their financial statement is that CCP is pretty dang committed to keep working for quite awhile in their US offices, leases through 2022. Good for them. Also, DUST activity was lacking, but, this was 2012 info. |

Beyond Valkyrie, there are 3 books out already, plus plans for a comic book series and a TV mini-series.
And don't forget that John Lander has disappeared into CCP's newly formed "mobile" division. I'm expecting big things on that front.

And I think that's a key reason why we can expect DUST to stick around for a while, even if it isn't profitable.
I bet it generates a significant amount of cross-game revenue for the company, something that's bound to go up if they get a legitimate reason for podders to care about what's happening on the ground. (That is: introduce something new and shiny in EVE, and have an essential production element involve PC in DUST.)
