I see a lot of contempt and disdain thrown at new players or players that just aren't that skilled. I mean sometimes it is pretty funny what they do, but it isn't a sign of their character. I randomly squadded up with a 4 man squad running tanks in a Dom match. They each had over 2000 WP and lots of kills, yet we lost because they were busy racking up kills instead of doing what needed to be done which would have meant they died more and killed less. Which is more worthy of respect, the guy who went 0-12 doing his damnedest for his team, or this squad who couldn't be bothered? |

It's simple for me: I look at the leaderboard. The opposing team has six or more members of the same corp? Yeah, **** you. I'll hog the redline with my charge sniper or something. If it's the beginning of the match, I'll be friendly enough to put a drop uplink somewhere, because the blueberries are guaranteed to not do that.
On the other hand, a good sign of winning is when a team member is standing in front of your face and doing stupid **** while you are sniping with a constant stream of kills. I wasn't aware that it was possible to invade someone's private space in a videogame, but this opened my eyes. |

When I see this I do the smart thing. I don't quit. I find a tactical place for an uplink!....then I hide as my "team" refuses to utilize this advantage I have given them. In the end I have few (or no) unnecessary deaths, maybe a few spawn WPs, and an end game bonus of SP and ISK.

so as a new player, can you explain me what winning is actually good for?
my main goal as new player is getting as many skillpoints per week as possible and not running out of isk, so at some point i can use weapons and equipment that allows me to be usefull. (calling a militia tank may be "cheap", but if you end up with making 2 kills and 90 warpoints and have lost your tank there is a good chance that you have lost more isk then gained, we dont even talk about getting killed in a tank twice)
i still have not completly discovered how skillpoints are distributed, but for isk it seems pretty clear.
1. win or lose seem to make no difference at all. 2. it seems like there is a fixed "pool" of isk given to both teams at the end of each game and that isk pool is divided between all players (mostly) depending on how many warpoints they made.
an example example:
- i had a game were my team got stomped realy bad. i made like 200 warpoints thanks to a drop uplink within our own redline zone, while most of the other guys got 0 warpoints. we have lost that game with i think 0 kills (there were like 10 tanks at the redline border + lots of sniper somewhere). i made 340k isk in thise fight with 0 kills and 200 warpoints.
- the other side, i played in squad with some realy good people andthere was another squad in our team with realy good people. i made 1200 warpoints in this match, thats the best i ever got at that point. the problem was i was only #12 because everyone else made more warpoints. one dude got 3500 and the top player 4100 warpoints.
i got 110k isk out of this match.
those arethe 2 most extrem examples, but all my games so far tell me that this is the way isk are distributed. so if i would play for maximum isk i would not like that my team mates make as much warpoints as i do or even more. actually best would be if i would be the only one to make warpoints. (the best for maximum isk/game)
skill distribution seems to work a bit different, the amount of skillpoints i get stands in no relation to the isk i get afterthe fight.
i got fights with like 50 warpoints at the end ofthe match 15 losses 0 kills, game lost but 5000 skillpoints gained. that example above where i made 340k isk, i got something between 1000 and 2000 skillpoints out of that fight.
i suspect that actual combat stats like damage taken and damage dealt and such stuff may play a role for skillpoints. the more i shoot and the more people shoot at me the more skillpoints. games where i used and lost multiple tanks were so far the games with most skillpoints. i cant tell if winning or loosing a game have any impact on skillpoints gained.
so again. if i, as a new player, join a random game alone, why does it matter to me if we win or loose the game? (aside from the fact that i couldnt do **** the first weeks towards winning a game). |

This is a highly competitive game, excluding everything else. So its not surprising that guys air out their frustrations about hapless blueberries.
And lets be honest here, if you want to do the damnedest for your team, then maybe 12 deaths is the wrong way to do it.

I've seen all of those "signs" and still won many games... You must be in a very... negative influence on your team because you give up. Well, you giving up is probably what constitutes to what you believe to be true because your inactivity could well cause the argument to become true. I've had 1,2,3,5, and 7 all in the same game several times and still won. It's usually idiots who rush the redline, so they are easily distracted while all the points get reclaimed. :/

DeathwindRising wrote:surely ccp has some kind of data that supports all this... not only that, but the game is fundamentally broken at its most basic design elements. you must reward the player for actively participating and provide an means of escape when things go wrong.
wp dont count because you get them regardless of whether or not you do anything. thats broken
sp dont count because you get that as well for doing nothing. thats broken
isk dont count either when you get it for both losing and winning whether you contributed to that win or loss. thats broken
nobody has any reason for trying to win a match that does not readily appear to be in their favor.
new players hide in the redlines because they neither have the isk, or skills to contribute towards a win. which means that anyone being matched with a new player is already at a disadvantage. that leads to poor team moral, which leads to a team giving up.
ccp needs to keep new players together. period. that way they will feelas though things are even.
ccp also needs to provide a militia gear only mode and forcibly set everyone's sp skill level to 3 for the match. everybody gets the same gear to choose from, and everybody uses that gear at the same level of sp investment. this is what our public contract modes should have been done like
The single most predictive variable for the matchmaker is players' historical rankings on the end-of-match board, with your ranking weighted by who you were fighting with and who you were fighting against.
I support SP rollover.

As for ISK, I'm really not sure. I heard that the game gains more if the opposing team uses more expensive equipment or something. A while ago I made third place on the ranking with just 200,000 ISK. Which I also get when I'm in the middle of the leaderboard and even in the lower part I generally get around 150,000. It also seems to depend on time, as I only get 10,000 or so if I join an almost finished match. |
