Please can someone tell me which weapon skills are for the very first weapon that one gets as a beginner?
I understand that I have a wildly inaccurate weapon to start off; some form of militia weapon, but what are the skills for that particular weapon?
I have decided to try to lean a weapon that I have an inexhaustible supply of as I tend to get killed a dozen or times a mission and there's no point in using weapons that aren't appearing from nowhere.
I will worry about the skills for weapons that I should be training for later on. But first, I want to be able to fire this one with a modicum of skill.

Its to waste your sp so buying boosters is more appealing. If you don't it will take longer to survive against those Black suit guys you see in every match.

You have an assault rifle and a sub machine gun, you can skill into those, I wouldn't spend a lot skilling into the AR now though, better to put you SP into armor and shields and weapons upgrades. |

I understand your reasoning, and you are right in assuming that skilling into your freebie weapons will make you better with those weapons, but it may not work out for you in the long run. You're better off buying yourself a stock of militia weapons of various types, and finding out which weapons you like best. You can also use Aurum or Loyalty Points (earned from Faction Warfare) to buy weapons without spending any skill points. Once you've done that, pick two Light Weapons (or one Light and one Heavy), and one Sidearm, and skill into those. You'll have more fun, and play better, with weapons you enjoy using.

I should also note that you can edit your starting, free suits. This is how you can determine which weapons they are equipped with. You can also duplicate them, and put a new weapon on, just to try it out.

Quick tip for saving isk:
You can modify they starter fits and change the weapons, so for example I could use the starter medic fit, and swap the assault rifle for a MLT sniper and then BAM a 90% free/limitless suit, all you need to pay to restock is the sniper, everything else is free!
Hope this helps :)

Have you played FPS before and are skilled at them? Then go first into weapons.
If you havn't go for core skills (armour, shields, electronics)
Having said this getting the biggest jump for weapon upgrades is often the MLT to STD (Miltia to Standard) as the quarter to third extra ammo may be the difference between death or a win. You can always quick change (tap R2) to a sidearm and SMGs are particularly good (fast to change to and similarly characteristics to an AR).
Shotguns take a fairly high weaponry skill to spec into. But the MLT shotgun is very good... If you are using a shotgun you typically have only a couple of shots required to kill them, if more then they are engaging you back pedaling and you need to swap out to an SMG.
Try out a bunch of weapons. Certain scenarios are better for different ones.

Thanks, I wasn't sure that I had a Sub Machine Gun - the fitting screen seems to be awkward to use but it's certainly somesort of automatic something or other. And I have a hand gun or sorts.
I wll try and put points into the armour and try to find a better weapon to use but since this is my first FPS on a console I am cack at it. Before this my only other games that I played were on the PC which tended to be Eve as an industrialist so no real combat gaming skills within the wetware.
Thanks again, I will have a go again to see if I can buy something. As long as it's cheap as I tend to go through a dozen respawns a scenario.

depends on what weapon and playstyle you like..
i could suggest make an alt character and do this..
Weaponry 3 -> Light weapon operation 1.
doing the above gives you acess to 4 main (light) weapons of which you will want to get 1 level in to unlock the use of the "standard" weapon. standard is better then militia and not that much more costly.
Assault rifle. base main stay for close to mid range fights, dont have a scope except for "tactical" ones.
Combat rifle. a nice rifle with burst fire good stopping power nice and accurate from hip and down sights for close to medium range.
rail rifle. supposedly very accurate from the hip. nice scope great at mid to mid-long range at close range you may want the close range alternative (only available in advanced or above)
scrambler rifle, feels reminiscent of something from Quake or unreal tournament.. great dmg and rate of fire and the charged shot is killer.. and works well with aim assist. nice scope and good for close-ish to mid-long.

The Assault Rifle (you start with a Militia Assault Rifle) is quite deadly without any skills. The Assault Rifle skill will reduce the kick, but letting go of the trigger for just a fraction of an instant will reset the kick, so without skills trained you can still do quite well just feathering the trigger.
I think this might have been deliberate, giving new players a Rifle that is still effective even without skills.
However, as Tch Tch pointed out, the Standard Assault Rifle which you can get with Level 1 Assault Rifle skill, does have a larger clip size which does make a difference.
As Tch Tch mentioned, the Shotgun is another weapon which is still quite effective without skills.
The SMG is a different story. Without skills it is good enough to finish off an opponent if your Assault Rifle runs out of ammo, but to become a dominant weapon in its own right the SMG requires full SMG Operation skill and some levels of SMG Sharpshooter.
Edit: Actually I think some of the Starter Suits may have a Scrambler Pistol rather than a SMG. I would recommend the SMG over the Scrambler Pistol unless you can take advantage of the headshot bonus.

- Terminus There have been many EVE players, including myself this time last year, who are in the same boat. If your gun game is getting you discouraged, try skilling into Remote Explosives (under Explosives in the Weapon tree.) They will get you some kills and allow you to make a valuable contribution to the team until your gun game improves.

The SMG plays as a short range AR so the skills in one plays to another.
Much like Nova knives play as a short range shotgun ;)
I'd practice swapping weapons (quick R2 tap, if you hold down R2 you can select weapons or equipment). The quick swap is very good when starting out as you tend to need more shots to hit/kill someone.
But when starting out I find SMG is the best starter secondary ie spray and pray. Scambler pistol will improve your firing discipline though and long term you will appreciate that... But a safer way is sniping.
RR has a 0.25 second spool up time, so you have to wait that long before it fires. It's aimed accuracy is pin point so at range it's great. The scrambler and SMG are both good with it.

Thank you for this. I am going to print out all of your guides and then give them a good reading.
After yesterday's fiasco I am going to need all the knowledge that I can get. It seems that Dust HQ have decided that I am a seasoned player so I don't have access to the beginner fights any more. And yesterday was embarrasing; I think that everyone on the opposing side was wearing Cloak Shield tech as I never saw a Red all game...
Lots to read and I will have another go to ruin my side's chances of getting the target.
