Eve Online uses the term "expansion" to mean a themed set of releases over a period of roughly 6 months. Expansions are named, and releases have numbers, with release numbers resetting to 1.0 for each expansion.
For Dust, the current "expansion" is "Uprising" and the current release is "Uprising 1.7".
If everything had gone smoothly there would have been a winter expansion around October 2013, which would have had a new name. However, things clearly didn't go smoothly, so they are extending Uprising with monthly patches until they have a new roadmap ready.
Once that roadmap is ready and the dev teams have had time to start implementing it I imagine we'll see a new expansion, and then another one 6 months after that, etc.

You got it wrong. Expansions were available WAY before DLCs and so on and were available for SP games too. Basically DLCs are just mini expansions.
