Hi to all,
(hopefully this is a General Discussion topic)...
In short, I tinkered a bit with the beta version a year ago when I bought my PS3 (came with some codes/promo pack for some 'free' AUR, etc.)... and always got my butt handed to me (I'm an ~older on-and-off gamer type and actually had never played a fps before)... and basically just gave up after constantly getting fried by (sorry guys) what I'm assuming/whining about were teams consisting of a bunch of mass driver noobs. :)
Anyways, my 13 yr old son and his friend told me that they just started playing last week and they think I'm crazy and actually had a ton of fun playing it... so, TODAY I decided to try once more, and so I created a new character, with a new PSN account I've been using, etc...
My question is simply, is there any true benefit to taking advantage of the old account during this revisiting of the game I am about to embark on, given 1. (Note: I haven't a clue when I LAST used it, I'm guessing it was before the May launch but/yet...) I somehow have for this older character almost 6 million ISK, almost 10 million SP and still have 2,500 AUR left over from what I think was initially 15,000 AUR due to the promo pack), compared to 2. The character I created today using a newer PSN account, which starts me out with 250,000 ISK, 500,000 SP and 0.0 AUR to work with
In a perfect world I'd just stick to #1 but I hardly ever use that PSN account anymore in general (was/am trying to keep all my ps3 play to within this newer PSN account, I dunno I'm weird like that), am under the impression that I am not able to just transfer the game data from #1 to the newer PSN account, and so I was just hoping some of you could chime in your thoughts on this. For example, assuming I don't give up this time around, if it's only a small number of game play hours before I reach the ISK and SP numbers I have on #1, then perhaps I'll just suck it up and not bother using this old character that I have, that's on an older PSN account that I never use anymore.
It's not a world-changing inquiry, but thanks for reading nonetheless; I spent an hour or so googling around but didn't find much about this... regardless, looking forward to seeing how I hold up this time around :p

Your first like
Anyway to your question, your previous character is better as it has more skill points, enough to be heavily specialized in a role actually. But I insist that you spend these skill points wisely, so try the new account to get a know how on what you want to level into. Or even better use the old account so that you accumulate sp with it, but instead of using them, use it after a month has passed. |

Awwww!!!! Now YOU are a friendly stranger lol. My post becomes sillier each time I read it... perhaps I'll just deal with the logging out/in and continue figuring this stuff out on the old character. hmmmm |

Be very careful on how you spend that 10 million Skill points as there will be no more respecs anytime SoonGäó.
AKA do not spend those skill points until you have done your research.

Use your existing character and plot out what you're going to spend your SP on before doing so. 10mil SP is a years worth of passive SP. It would take ~6 months of active play (capping each week without boosters) to reach that amount. With 10mil SP you can put together a very resepctable set up for a single role. You'll want to play around with the various frames (scout, assault, logi, heavy), weapons and roles (slayer, logi, point defense hvy, shotgun scout, etc.) to see what you enjoy before investing your SP. I could use my limited expertise to help you if you message me in game.

I say use the old account. If I were someone who broke forum rules I would suggest another option to do with that other account, but I don't, so I won't.

Awesome... I just dug around for another few minutes to figure out what seems to have happened (guessing at some point while I was absent from the game over this past year that my (or maybe everybody's upon launch back then?... and/or if one chose/chooses to?) SP were all reset, aka became 'unallocated' ... anyways, so I check back up here and wow... these replies have been great. Sorry about the ignorance and thanks for responding despite it.
I'm definitely going to fool around with the old character but without allocating a single SP until I figure out what my likes are/what I'm good at and so forth. The suggestion to spend the time researching the matter was key... not to whine at all, but I just didn't want to invest all that time right away since I did that last year... only to constantly get destroyed and eventually just walk away... OK OK I'll stop...
I will admit here, as I felt a year ago, that the concept of Dust 514 is freaking stellar imo... Hoping this time around I'll be able to survive more than a few nanoseconds. Ha. Wish me luck :) |

The best advice I can give you is leave the old character alone for a few weeks to a month. Don't do ANYTHING to it.
Use your new character. Use the free SP to skill into a bunch of weapons at STD level and see which ones you like. Not all the weapons have militia counterparts and are definitely not on your starter suits. Realistically just going with the 4 racial rifles is sufficient as everything else is pretty inferior in comparison for the moment. But, if you want to be thorough, you can pick 3-4 differnt weapons, use them, then delete that character and start over with the next 3-4, repeat till you've gone through them all.
Play around with militia suits, assault, heavy, logi. Decide which ones you like.
THEN do your research and spend your SP. Regardless, go with core skills first, and the weapon/suit you like. Spent well, that 10 million makes you immeditately competitive in terms of gear.

I would also recommend that you are careful where you spend SP beyond level 3 with all weapons and suits, and perhaps some equipment as well.
Dust seems to change drastically between builds, just ask many people who have proto swarm launchers. I myself went lvl 5 with sniper rifles, which I haven't used for weeks if not months, as well as SMG, which I found to be significantly less effective once 1.7 hit. These are not the only examples.
Hacking is always a good skill to have so I don't think that could hurt, as well as armor and shield skills. Otherwise, don't be afraid to save much of that SP until builds have become less frequent and balance issues have been largely ironed out.

Lots of good advice, and definitely make use of the old account, that 10 Mil SP will make your life a hell of a lot easier.
My advice, make sure to check out the Rookie Training Grounds forum https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=899.
Lots of good info for the beginner and intermediate level, so there should be some posts in there that will help you work out how to use your SP wisely. |

Join a corp, too. There are specific learning corps, like d-UNI and others, or established corps with veteran players who can guide you along the way.
Shameless plug: Feel free to message me in game as well, my corp is small but more than half of our members have 15 million SP, and probably at least one person in each role with 20 million +.(pretty sure most of us are over 30 in age too, I think the only under-20 players are other members kids, lol)
