So someone asked me the other day "What is CCP's vision for Dust? I mean were do they think its going?" So I thought about it for a while because I had nothing better to do and I remembered CCP's demo that they showed at Fanfest in 2011.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e92Wpt7_RV8&list=PLBF559AD5A9B47E90&index=13
The gameplay starts at about 12:30 ish.
This is what Dust 514 is meant to be, this was the vision CCP had for it and I think maybe the Devs need to sit down and watch this demo again to rediscover and re-evaluate what they are going to do with the game. To me the Dust 514 in this video is far superior to what we are playing today. It has large maps that have very varied terrain so that you could potentially have Five tanks on the map and its not suddenly a massive problem. In fact tanks are being used to break through a defensive line which is really what they should be used for rather then scull-king around the red line snipping at people from across the map. It has skirmish 1.0 which was just awesome when compared to skirmish 2.0. It even has ideas that would make the Dust-EVE link much stronger then it currently is, some of it is shown like the orbital strike requiring way more co-ordination then it currently has (i.e the authentication code) and some of it is talked about by the Devs in passing such as biomass being sold to EVE players for profit. Even the turrets and supply depots look far cooler then the ones we use today.
Some of the things in this video are probably nothing new to those of us that played the very early beta but many people who play today might not have ever seen what Dust 514 used to be and in my opinion needs to become once again if we are to see 2015 together as a community.

Wasn't this demo played on a decent PC? The layout is much more intricate. Looking more and more at the past videos produced just tells me, hardware limitations is what holding back a chunk of development.Otherwise why ship out something that is a shell of itself |

This as all done on the PS3, they even had the demo playable by the public at that fan fest and held the very first Dust tournament the day after that presentation.

It had a completely different engine.
Shield regeneration bonus for Gallente Assault is about as useful as Sharpshooter for Nova Knives.

If I remember correctly, the engine you're mentioning was the Carbon, right? I'm tired right now, so I'm roughly 65% sure it's the Carbon.

The game really evolved backwards

It actually doesn't look that far off from what we have nowadays. I don't know why they went back though. Maybe extreme balancing issues? I also don't know why they removed Skirmish 1.0 in the first place.

Jenza,
Not sure if you have the capability but I would be very keen to know if the recently installed EP, CCP Rouge, has seen this. I think a pretty fascinating chat discussion could be started by the EP asking the collected Devs and CPM the following questions after re watching the video: 1) is this what we still want in Dust? 2) how did we arrive at where we are at now and is this moving us closer or further to the vision for Dust?

I would very much like to play this version of Dust. This version of Skirmish looks wicked fun, and the map was huuuuuge. 10/10 would play. |

In the meantime DEVs will claim they stick to the Long-Term-Plan, they just happen to change it all the time to fit their shortcomings. |
