Like that line of gates thing we see every so often.
Or what that new massive caldari structure is in the background.
Or even some of the outposts we fight around.
These structures are not unknown artifact buildings, these are structures that are designed, and created NY the 4 empires. Which means even from a roll play perspective, we SHOULD, AND NEED to know what these buildings are used for. Making us guess does not make sense, and it personally ruins any immersion for me.
You know what I think? I think the designers at ccp that create these objects for us to look at, and look at don't even know what they're used for. I think they just made them because it looked cool. Not because fit in with the lore. So they probably don't even have a description for them. So they make us guess because they don't actually have an answer.

I agree, I think they should be giving more back stories and names. It does break immersion when I look at something and think why is this here. I would very much like to see some descriptions of the structures around us, it does give RPs more tools to have fun with and that gives everyone content in the end.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride.

The city would be good for living in, but we're not after nice houses and restaurants. While a city is bigger, the outposts we fight over are likely worth more because of whatever function they perform; for example, I'm guessing Research Lab outposts are full of extremely valuable intel and equipment.
Also, giving them specific backstories and names would hurt immersion since they appear in the background on many districts on many planets, so its not just one city, its many cities (built in some standardized way). One explanation would not suffice. How much explanation is required anyway? people want to live on habitable planets, they build cities there, and live there.

It isn't really about giving the structures a backstory, but an actual purpose. Like you said, the Research Lab could contain valuable intel and equipment, but how do we know? In some maps there is the large pyramid-like structure which is said to be a storage facility. What does it store? Clones, prototype tech, blueprints? Getting to know why we are fighting over these buildings in the first place would be great for the immersion factor.

Maybe, but seems pointless to me. As long as you can think of plausible reasons why it would be valuable, its good enough in my opinion; as long as its not something an amusement park. We are mercenaries, we fight over stuff because someone pays us to, employers wouldn't provide extensive explanations, just the money.

yeah these SI and other buildings look awesome but they really have no practial function other being a place to fight for us, i think the buildings need more interior spaces and they need to look like people acctually use them for some serious internet spaceship bussiness. |

What you fail to realise is that doing such a thing would require effort on CCP's part. This is evidently quite difficult.

I want to know what that giant invisible building is past the southwest bottom of Ashland map is. You see the lights in the sky and when it goes to the victory/defeat screen you can actually see it.
I want to go to there.

When the research outpost was released it came with a nice description of the different functions within the facility and a description of each socket item in the infrastructure set. I'm expecting the same role playing background information when production and cargo are released.
It's definitely getting better in that regard.

Need to know basis. You don't have the proper security clearance so I can't tell you what's there. Just get control of the sector and our recovery team will take care of the rest.

you are a mercenary hired to protect a friendly structure or attack an enemy one. that is the extent of your job. you are on a need to know basis and unless the guy paying the contract wants you to know then you do not need to know.
as for the structures in the background. they are just background to add depth. all you need to know is that they are buildings in the distance and not going to have an impact on any fighting. as long as that distant structure is not on any maps then it is just a structure. it doesn't need any lore or backstory. i look out of my RL window and i don't know any back story about anything out there as it has no impact on where i am now or anything relating to me or my job. the same applies to dust. i'm fighting for this structure on a contract. once i complete my contract my job is done and i vacate the planet. i dont need to know where the best nightclub is at the weekend because i'm not going to be there once the contract is done. there is no sight seeing, no shore leave, no R+R. your only concern is the contract and the client knowing what the purpose is of the structure you are protecting/attacking is irelavant to your job. aside from the main plot of eve ccp leave us to write the story because from their point of view its irelavant as it has no impact on what we do
ccp like us to speculate to what things are because this is a RL thing we do and ccp like things to follow a more familiar flow.
most of the eve lore is also written by people who play eve and dust. all you need to do if you want more info is speculate and create your own story behind it.
also those are not gate things...... there are too many to start with, would be kind of expensive to have so many on 1 spot on a planet.also if they were gates why put the gate at the top of the tower and not the bottom? my guess would be terraformers. this fits in with eve lore as most of the planets were terraformed.
another thing to consider. every planet/district is different and there are thousands of them. you expect ccp to write a story for each one. there are too many possible backstories and ccp are never going to concern themselves with that. |
