I've been trying out the weapon, and i got to say, it's pretty good. At close quarters i win most fights because i feel like the gun has this stun effect on the enemy.
A lot of people stack armour and the mass driver shreds armour.
I've only used the Exo (level 3.) I have level 4 now. I'm gonna get the freedom next week.
I'm doing pretty well for myself considering this is my first time ever using the mass driver. I got to say though, everyday i feel myself getting better with it, learning the ark more and more, pulling off fancy bank splash shots. Learning when to switch to my sidearm.
It's definitely a weapon that takes practice. But it's a great weapon. I don't know why we don't see it more often.

In a situation like that where you might teamkill, it's best to either wait for someone to die, or pull out your sidearm

I think weapon balance is becoming fairly well balanced. You can use a weapon that isn't popular anymore and still do well with it. The main rifles may be the most common but that makes sense. The rest are situational and specialized but are good in those situations.

Things seem normal, no sign of the enemy, hacking the objective, then I get an explosion and lose all of my pitiful shielding.
Turned to try and kill whoever it was that was killing me with huge splash damage and he was there. I don't know how, but he was perfectly nailing it over the railing. That guy had skills. He rocked that EXO-5 MD the whole game; made top too.

It's very situational, so most people will go for a more balanced rifle. When the situation arises though, I whip my MD and go nuts. Whether it's shooting through a door into a packed room, using it in a tight corridor full of advancing troops, or just on the rooftops above a mass of enemies I am cackling like a madman.

I only had 1 death in an ambush (I was the last kill before my team lost, btw), while I was using an MD on a minmatar assault. Everything was standard.
I prefer the old tactic of just doing area-denial from high ground.

I used it a lot before, but once I heard a nerf was rumored I felt I had to practice more with the assault rifle (being the widely used allround weapon unlikely to get nerfed). And when I realized I could run a completely BPO-based fit that cost me nothing to lose and still managed to get 1000 wp or more on average per match, I sort of didn't see the point of going back to the mass driver.
I break it out occasionally now and then (useful for guarding objectives and supplying artillery service when you are on the high ground), but not as much as before. |

It's definitely a weapon that takes practice. But it's a great weapon. I don't know why we don't see it more often. A few updates ago everyone was using the mass driver. It was like CoD: MW2 noob tube fest with a Dust514 twist. With the addition of aim assist most people switched to assault rifles or scrambler rifles.
With the TTK so low most people haven't gone back to the mass driver, especially with the addition of the rail rifle and combat rifle. Honestly I enjoy the current use of gun game more than the noob tube mass driver spam this game was a mere 2-3 months ago. After all the mass driver was meant to be an area denial weapon, I still see it used on occasion for it's intended purpose. |

The thing with the mass driver is that you're not supposed to use it head on. The ttk is high because the rounds launched have a considerable travel time at longer ranges and an MD gunner needs to take that into account. Per shot even the basic MD does way more damage than a rail rifle, and its got splash damage to boot.
But in order to compete with rail rifle users, it requires a different mindset than just point and shoot. (most shots used arent gonna impact where the crosshairs are pointed anyway)
Good MD users are scary to everyone unless they are heavily shield tanked (which is rare nowadays since most seem to rely on armor). Done right it can even let you engage multiple targets if you abuse the splash damage (usually you're dead even with a proto suit and gun if you got two hostiles focusing their fire on you)
I thought I might add my other reason for not using the MD as much, and that is the high cpu-requirement. The mass driver optimization skill also seems a bit poorly designed in that regard because it reduces PG requirement rather than cpu requirement (in my opinion it should be the other way around, because not even proto MDs require a lot of power, but ridiculous amounts of cpu), which is bad if you play as a logi as I do, and want to have more cpu for modules and equipment. |

EDIT:
The mass driver is effective though. Way more effective than assault rifles even. It's just that I tend to think in strategic terms when I play so I much rather go for using weapons/equipment that are a little less effective if they can get the job done and cost me less to lose, than more expensive gear. Yea, i see what you mean. Even though i could get more isk anytime i wanted too, i hate losing it. I'll probably use EXO in pubs. Freedom if i'm going against try hards.

had prof 2 MD, but rarely take it out of the closet anymore. The squads I run with are more tactical, so quiet is the name. There are certain situations in very specific areas of a few maps where the MD wins. They have the high ground, the arc and the support to keep them from being flanked. In the past, I used it exclusively on my logi to deny ground. Now, with ttk so low, the range on the RR and the very limited ammo the MD has, its a crazy man's weapon.
Those very few areas mentioned for MD goodness...those are some good kills.
