But the horrible..... horrible things they said feels true at the same time. As much as I want to burn game spot studios to the ground there argument is valid. I may be a little late but once I read that review, it ruined my day. Idk maybe its just that I'm a vet on this game. But I'm crushed by that review.

As long as you enjoy the game, that's all that matters. If I listened to movie critics, I would have never seen half the movies I love.

This game sucks and the majority of people know it. Sorry, too see that you are in denial about the truth. Dust had a lot of potential but CCP bungled and mismanaged that potential. They should stick to internet spaceships IMO. FPS games are obviously a bit more than they can handle it seems. |

At no point in this game's development would I have given it above a 6. However, like the UP scout suit, it's uniquely entertaining, if incredibly frustrating to play. It's not for everyone.

I remember way back before and after the 2011 e3 build, the game would micro freeze about every 3 seconds (on top of low framerates).
I remember the early weapon mechanics that made absolutely no sense (AV grenades that did 1500 dmg to infantry, dumb fire swarms).
I don't think many CCP apologists realize just how bad this game used to be and how bad the game still is to this day. Progress has been made, it's not as bad as it was, but the foundation that they built this game on was made of shattered (more like powdered) glass. It was bad. Unplayable for everyone except those who believed in the concept and potential.
If CCP can pull this off in a reasonable amount of time (1-2 years max) and turn Dust into a success, then i'll support them. However, it's the uncertainty that is killing me. I look forward to glancing CCP's financial report.
The PC and SL should fit into Sidearm/ Equipment slots so it's accessible and practical to carry one.

No other game quite enforces the thought of teamwork like Dust does. And I'm thinking about the big two on consoles...BF and COD. In those games, lone rangers can carry squads or teams. 3. Science Fiction FPS
Science fiction is great commentary on our society. It always has and will continue to be so. Dust 514 offers a deep and imaginative world that you can completely submerge into. It goes further than Halo story with lore that could take you weeks to months to read just to have a handle on what's happening...speaking of current events
4. Players and Lore
Players and their action shift the lore. Victories are even talked about in the in game news circuit. It was quite cool to read that EoN made it into the lore when they took to Molden Heath and battles raged on. It gave the player meaning and the feeling of being a part of something more. I like the sound of that compared to be a random character for a NAVY SEALS team or some terrorist extreme faction. Here, your actions can change the course of the universe
5. Social Aspect
Let's face it, Dust 514 got the social aspect mastered. The only way I was introduced to so many great players in the likes of BF and COD is if I increased rank, forums, or just played alot. In Dust, that middle ground is cut as comm channels help mercs to assemble together. One comm channel can bring the world together and you might find yourself with a member from Japan, to Iceland, to Norway and such. Friends are made and enemies are born.
6. Intense action/Coming down to the wire
"Battles in New Eden can be fast, frentic."
A good battle in New Eden is memorable. It feels action packed like a movie. You recall your squad mate coming in at the right moment to lay down an opponent that nearly killed you while you got caught reloading. Driving a LAV behind enemy lines to get a uplink down so the enemy can be pinched. Crouching behind cover as enemies slowly move forward to push onto the bridge.
These are just some scenarios but you get the picture. Battles in NE can be damn good. Players will switch their tactics (or not) to adjust to the changes. You could be killing their MCC, but your team clone reserves are depleting rapidly. Small things such as this makes the battle memorable to where you salute your enemies for a good war. You really can't find that same feeling in BF or COD.
These are just some of things I thought about when you asked that question. Stuff like the above and more keeps me coming back.
And when you play with like minded people...it makes the experience worth it even more
o7 to the mercs keeping up the fight!

Being able to get an eve pilot to come and chase away an enemy in orbit providing orbitals and then coordinating with another eve pilot to provide orbitals for our side. And having one of the orbitals literately clear the way for the point cap that turned the game to our favor and eventual victory. Just another day in Minmatar FW. |

That guy is a freelance writer, and this is a "revised review". He also did the EVE review as well, which I think got 8/10.
The original review was done by Kevin, which imo, is one of the best reviewers in the industry today, and he scored the game low as well. I can't remember the score he gave, but I want to think it's 6/10... it might be lower, but not a 4... I think.
Anyway, reviewer was right for the most part, the bads were SPOT ON! Linking DUST and EVE is a selling point, cuz without that this game is nothing more than a sub par lobby shooter with poor graphics. Thanks to the EVE lore (lack of), this game has potential to someday be decent.
Till that day, we can expect much of the same. When the beta testing was more fun than the actual game, something went wrong. Just saying.

Debatable. I've seen these matches too...and most of the time that's the winning side. Even if they weren't a way to win a match of strategy all together (sometimes I wonder why), all those kills were someone not backing up someone else or taking up objectives.

And this is not exclusive to Dust. A good match against a good team is memorable in every FPS. Most also suffer from having one side swamp the other like Dust.

The gameplay's more tangible issues are too numerous to recount in full. Battlegrounds are too large for the player count, resulting in long stretches where enemies are nowhere to be found. They're wastelands of muddy industrial sameness, with no attention to scale or flow. Paths dead-end nonsensically. Ladders and hallways lead to empty rooms devoid of relation to objectives or tactics. Weapon types are tremendously imbalanced. Audio effects sound cheap and have little relevance to the direction or proximity of their source. Dips in the frame rate result in distant enemies frequently looking like they're moving in stop-motion. The list goes on, but the problems run deeper.
This pretty much sums it all up.
No you kill this blueberry hacking the CRU we are camping. I already killed the last 2.

Honestly the only thing dust is good at is the social aspect.
Dust is by far, the BEST fps game I have ever seen in this department. The chat channels, the corp channels, the push to talk thing(my fav) and being able to talk to anyone anywhere as long as you got the chat channel.
Apart from just chatting, the corp thing is amazing. No other fps encourages joining of clans as much as dust. However this is partly due to pub stomping... You know... If you're not in a corp, you probably can't fight pubstomping.
That is honestly what has kept me on this game for so long. Nothing else really apart from my Friends that I have gained thanks to the social aspect of this game.

I'm sorry, of all the many FPSs I have played I can quite comfortably say that the above is your only valid and reasonable point. Even then, though Dust may be the only one to do this, it still does it badly compared to what it COULD be.
Especially the teamwork thing, have you ever seen a competitive, voice-commed TF2 match or a 100-man outfit vs 100-man outfit base siege in PS2, those both rain on Dust for teamwork (for different reasons).

I understand how you feel. The first review by Kevin Van Ord was actually quite fair, and it's interesting to see that the score has gone DOWN since the launch, but we are looking at two different reviewers who have different experiences with the EVE universe. The points about the maps are very valid though - the maps are big enough for 48 or 64 players in some instances... they are just huge - not ideal for 32 players. I still have faith despite all this - it can get better, it's just that the progress is so glacial. Hopefully the Executive producer is taking a good hard look at everything here. |
