*Because there's no EVE discussion section here... Reason I'm not posting this on EVE Forums: I'm not re-activating my account before I learn this stuff. So if someone from the EVE Forums and/or an EVE player could answer this for me, thanks a bunch.
I played EVE Online a while ago, and I REALLY enjoyed the game, but my wallet isn't a fan of the idea that I need to pay 25$ every month. It makes it sad. #walletsadface So I plan on re-activating my account, and take the time to play the Market game, so I can start making enough money to pay for PLEX via ISK (Looks like the price has risen, but I believe in myself. <3).
Is there a guide on EVE Economics, and how to make a profit by sitting in the middle of Dodoxie, looking at paperwork? Also, which should I go to? I know Jita is like, THE place to go for trading/money-making, but I'm not sure if I'm able to get there without trying to raise standing with Caldari (Last time I checked, I was -10 with Caldari), which I have no idea how to do. #nooby
So yup. If I could get an EVE player or someone to link me to a thread or something that will teach me more about the art of economics and/or making money using the market, that'd be great. Preferably something very in-depth and definitely something that makes sense.
I know the gist of it: Buy for less, sell for more. But I'm hoping there's more to it than that, and stuff.
TL;DR, I'm an EVE noob. Looking for a link to a thread on teaching newbies how to play the economy game.

Can't help you with the market, I'm particularly bad at it, but why $25/month?

25$ a month is the subscription cost for EVE. I'd rather spet 8 hours a day for 21 days mining with an Osprey so I could pay the, what, 700 million ISK for PLEX(?), than pay that much out of my own wallet. I can cut down my mining time if I learn the market properly, and start doing mad-skills trading.
EDIT: Looks like it's 15$. That was my first guess but it looked too low to me.
EDIT 2: Also, looks like PLEX is about 80 million less than I assumed it was. I played a while ago, while it was at 600 mil.
EDIT 3: Alright, reading these posts, it looks like I might as well just wait until I can get a decent-paying job, and THEN start playing again. Hm.

If you have an account full of PI, you can probably PLEX for less in-game time than mining.

PI? I have one character, and I spent all my time on the character busy unlocking Heavy Scout Drones and the Algos. :P

Cara (The latest poster as of now) was a huge help. I think I'm going to pay IRL cash for a month of game-time (I also get an in-game ship, with one of the specials, which lowers the price to 10$ and, well, a free ship), and during that month, I'll spend some of my time doing trading (If I don't earn enough to PLEX the account, I'll still have fun doing it, and I'll enjoy the challenge. Possibly learn IRL marketing skillz. Maybe. It's still a game), and some of my time actually progressing the game (Aiming for a big drone ship with many blasters, maybe I'll get an E-War ship somewhere in there).
When I get gud, I'll see about joining up with a band of pirates, or a corp, or SOMETHING that isn't sitting around doing missions and looking at spreadsheets.

Trading is generally more isk then basic mining unless you have a hulk.
It is also cool if you want to see more systems. But you have to chose your routes and safe jump points. Mind you with a large enough industrial (Indy) you can carry a packed frigate a do some exploring before transporting.

Yea Tch, like I said, I only have one ship, and that's an Algos, which is a drone ship meant for long-range combat (Look at me, being all smart about ships and whatnot). Although I could look at an Industrial ship. No idea what a packed frigate is though, or why I would carry it around with me.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just realized a packed frigate is just a frigate that's all boxed up, so I could get it in the ship. Derpity derp. Why would I carry it around though?

imagine it's like an RV with a car in tow. You'll move around with a big ol' slow ship, holding a good deal of stuff, but park it occasionally and go around the immediate area in the car, taking only what you need. (Both to avoid losing it, and because you won't have nearly the cargo space.)

Personally, the first thing to define then is your preferred rules of engagement. There are good corps/areas to join for each of the different playstyles, but mismatching them just causes dissatisfying play time.

Protip: Playing EVE just to make enough ISK to play EVE is the first step down the road to boredom and burning out.
Find something you enjoy doing, pay a subscription for a month or 2. That's only $30. Think in terms of how many beers you would buy over 2 months and decide if the money is well spent.
Doing something you enjoy will naturally bring profits to you, and you can always supplement your income without 'grinding'. Even if you like to grind, missions are actually a very stable source of income, and there's always wormholes which can give you massive payouts if you have luck and patience.
Market tips: I don't have any, hah, but I used to set up buy orders for items I used on a regular basis, sell most of them and keep the rest for my own use in PVP (e.g. T2 afterburners, T2 MWD, T2 warp disruptors etc). This way I subsidize my PVP while making a decent profit to keep me out of the red.
These days, I don't bother, and realize that actually working in RL and PLEXing for my ISK is more cost effective for me. Think about it, what's minimum wage, $5 an hour? That's 3 hours of work for a whole month's entertainment, 6 hours for a month's entertainment + ISk to keep you PVP-ing all month long. Better than grinding out 100m ISK/hour which works out to be less than minimum wage... A lot less...

Depending what you're peddling the known trade hubs can indeed be "THE place to [AVOID] for trading/money-making" (fixed your comment). Everyone and their mother tries to move product there; supply drowns out demand, and you end up with razor thin profit margins on pretty much everything except rare/specialty items (there's even stuff that only sells below manufacturing costs). |

Believe it or not, I'm not actually old enough to legally get a job, although that's about, what, 6 months away from being at that age? So unless CCP suddenly decides to shut down EVE in the next 6 months, I should be good to go. McDonald's job, here I come...

Actually, buying these things at razor thing profits and moving them out to where they'd be more likely used can get you profits. Drones and ammos in mission hubs, in particular. Since they removed quality(was that the stat?) from NPC corp agents, the mission workload has spread out a bit, but you can still find the hotspots. (Use Dotlan maps to find concentrations of npc killing.)

I took his comment to mean trading within Jita, but I guess he could have meant different. Exporting out of Jita can indeed be profitable, but can also invert on your quite quickly. I've actually run into cases where I could buy ammo at mission hubs to sell for profit at Jita. lol. |

Well, BOSS. Looks like the shoe is on the other foot now, isn't it?
Anyways, I've been playing Eve forever and still never got the hang of heavy trading. But the best resource that I've found concerning it is this page: http://www.reddit.com/r/evetrading/
It'll take you some searching, but there are numerous guides spread throughout the subreddit, along with just good Q/A threads. Also reddit is just great for Eve info in general. So get to it. Also, though it takes a lot research and a little bit of skilling, Planetary Interaction can be a great way to make easy cash. You aren't going to get rich on it or anything, but it could help you get towards your goal.
Also, like somebody else said, playing the game just to make enough ISK to plex is a great way to burnout. Actually at that point Eve becomes a second job, and nobody ever played a game for that. $15 a month is about 1.5 trips to McDonalds. Just eat some chili twice a month instead and subscribe. It'll be alot easier on you and you can save your ISK for orbital strike ships.
Oh, and Dodi is a fine place for trading. |
