So what you're saying is that against bad players you can make it work, but against good players the fact that the RR has the best range and is a terrifying beast in CQC actually shows up?

Just saying that the RR destroys when they're right next to you. My HMG has no problem cutting down ARs in CQC usually but generally speaking the RR will just **** through me before I have the chance to hold the stream on them long enough.
I'd be fine with them being excellent long range weapons if they weren't automatic shotguns as well

That's definitely true, but doesn't do much for when you've got that initial half of a second in your favor.

I'm not on the ground often enough to say one way or the other for sure, just my basic impression is that I'm just as terrified of that thing at 2 meters as I am at 70.

right tool for the right task... if your getting mown down then they obviously have the right tool at the right time and you probably dont
We shouldn't just dismiss everything so easily though, I think it's fair to put these weapons under scrutiny given how new they are, and CCPs track record of releasing less than balanced weapons.
It's certainly too early to say one way or the other with any certainty, but to dismiss them as fine might not be the best option either.
