I would argue that the GÇ£rifleGÇ¥ class of weapons (AR, CR, SCR, and RR) is one of the few things in this game that seems like a well thought out, coherent and fully developed concept. Each has interesting strengths and tradeoffs. Each has a unique niche while still acting as a solid medium range assault weapon. You get a bit more range out of the RR and SCR (as well as an advantage vs. a tanking type), but have the downside of charge and/or overheat. The CR is somewhat handicapped by a relatively small clip, but works very well in CQC situations. The AR probably has the broadest set of situations where it is effective, but will lose out to the other three if within their optimal range/situation. You could reasonably argue that TTK is too short currently, but all of the rifles contribute to this is relatively equal amount. In order to balance the light weapons, I think the MD and Laser need to be buffed a bit so that they can fulfill their roles better. What exactly is the role of the laser anyway? The MD is clearly an area denial weapon. Is the laser supposed to be the anti-shield area denial weapon that operates in a conical rather than spherical space? I also wouldnGÇÖt mind a buff to sniper rifle head shot damage to give it the alpha it needs to be effective in a high eHP world, but thatGÇÖs just my inner sniper talking.

right tool for the right task... if your getting mown down then they obviously have the right tool at the right time and you probably dont We shouldn't just dismiss everything so easily though, I think it's fair to put these weapons under scrutiny given how new they are, and CCPs track record of releasing less than balanced weapons. It's certainly too early to say one way or the other with any certainty, but to dismiss them as fine might not be the best option either.
I agree, but I think the initial tone of this thread was a bit reactionary. As IGÇÖve said before, I think GÇ£rifleGÇ¥ category is in a decent place right now. There is always room for revision/modification, but IGÇÖm not sure there is a pressing need for that right now. YouGÇÖre experience with the RR vis-+á-vis close combat may be colored by your preference for running a heavy (and thus youGÇÖre mostly armor tanked). IGÇÖve found it fairly easy to get the RR centered on a heavyGÇÖs head in CQC. The short spool up time of the RR really does present a disadvantage against a suit that has some mobility, but I can see how it seems unbalanced from the perspective of a heavy. Hopefully the recent improvements to the HMG give heavyGÇÖs a little more comfort in CQC. In my experience over the last several days, the RR has felt Op only when defending exterior points (those with some open ground around them) or when firing from a height advantage. This has been countered by the relative disadvantage IGÇÖve felt when assaulting points or doing just about anything inside a building/compound. IGÇÖve often switched out to an AR or CR when playing inside a compound. I realize that my anecdotal experience doesnGÇÖt really constitute objective evidence, but I like to consider myself fairly observant.
Cheers,
Aramis
