Introduction: So youGÇÖre new to the game, have run through the lolcademy, and are now finding that youGÇÖre being mercilessly being crushed without any chance of retaliation? Are you finding that even when you catch a red-dot unaware and blaze away with your shiny new rifle, they barely notice you and are able to gun you down at their leisure? Have you been wondering why you suck so much, no matter what you do?
Well donGÇÖt worry, itGÇÖs not you! At least, itGÇÖs at most 1/3 you. The rest is game mechanics and what I like to call The RPG EffectGäó.
What it comes down to is this: there are three factors that substantively affect your performance on the battlefield, and only one of those is in your direct control.
These three are:
- Gun game (player ability)
- Effectiveness (Skill Points)
The first, gun game, is up to you. ItGÇÖs altogether possible youGÇÖre a hardcore FPSer and already have substantial gun game, and just need to learn the maps, tactics and feel of the game. It may be that youGÇÖre new to the genre and need to learn the lot. In any case, itGÇÖs a matter of days to week to reach an effective level and is reliant on your personal ability.
These last two (Effectiveness and Quality) are what make up The RPG Effect, and are only able to be overcome through time played. Due to these it will take a matter of months to reach a level where you can be reasonably effective, and can never fully be overcome.

You make it sound grim, but there are a few things I would like to point out:
1) In a game like World of Warcraft a level 1 player would not have a snowball's chance in hell of killing a level 80 player (or whatever their level cap is now). But a new player in a starter suit with no skill points allocated can kill a full Proto player in DUST. I have done it on alts, and I am not a particularly experienced FPS player. I will concede that a full Proto player has a considerable advantage over a new player in a starter suit, but the odds are not insurmountable as they are in other games.
2) While a player might never bridge the skill point gape between them and a player who started six months before them, there is no effective difference between a 22 million skill point player and a 33 million skill point player when you are pitting one suit against another. The difference is that the 33 million skill point player has the option of going Proto in several different roles, while the 22 million skill point player may only have 1 roll at the full Proto level. But you canGÇÖt change a suit in the middle of a fire fight, so there is effectively no advantage to the guy with an extra 10 million skill points.
Basically, the longer you play, the narrower the battle effectiveness gap between you and older players becomes. If you specialise in just one role, the battle effectiveness gap narrows faster than if you diversify early.
It may be hard on new players in their first days in the game, but on the other hand a new playerGÇÖs battle effectiveness increases way faster in the early days, than it does later. It is really easy to feel your progression in the early days. It gives them something to work towards. |

That's actually a pretty bad comparison, considering trying that comparison between 2 players in CoD, or BF, your logic doesn't pan out.

Edit: If we are talking about combat mechanics we should compare to CoD or BF, but when talking about character progression it is best to remember that DUST is also an MMO. CCP spent 2013 making DUST a better FPS, and they have said that their aim for 2014 is to make it a better MMO. |

Seriously doe, I would like Dust to be a better MMO, but it's doing a (sort of) good job right now.

Yup. It sucks.
Stay at range and pick your battle.....even then go gonna die....alot.

I'd say the biggest problem with a WoW analogy and even an Eve analogy is that you aren't forced into a tiny box and told to fight that level 80 or those capital ships. |

great post and thanks!!! Now I don't feel like a disaster at the game, now just lame. I have been playing for a week and already posted about needing to hit a player 8 to 10 times to kill and they kill me in 3 hits....
this was my posts :)
I'm a newbie and I like this game but I'm pissed a little that I die a lot. Almost tooo much :)
After 6 days I'm quite proud that I almost have 1 kill per 2 death.....0.5 ratio
there should be more academy time because I did much better the first 2 days since the players were not pro and with the same equipment....mainly militia.
If anyone can help me with builds I will really appreciate it. I have been testing and I really like the rail rifle, at least more than the assault. Also I don't if it's me or it's really difficult to kill veteran or long time players...I usually have to hit 8 or 10 times a player to kill him but I die with only 3 hits usually.....even with same type of weapons (maybe i have basic and the other one advance, but not more)...
Can you help me?

Two pieces of advice for you.
1. Check out my other post on strategies for gaming the system in your favour as a new player: Punching above your weight
2. Apply to Dust Uni. They're specifically setup to help new players learn the game and are a feeder to other specialised corps. Dust Uni
And make sure you keep asking questions in the training ground. There's a lot of people who are happy to help, so make use of their experience.
And good work on keeping a 0.5 Kill/Death ratio. I dropped down to about 0.38 before I managed to make any headway
