Just give it a cone spread and increase the damage per bullet to compensate. Here is the math I did:
1200 RPM 50 Damage Against 1m wide hitbox
2.2-¦ spread (DPS vs range too high, maybe good for Burst HMG)
25m = 1000 DPS (optimal) 40m = 666 DPS 60m = 416 DPS 80m = 333 DPS 100m = 263 DPS
2.8-¦ spread (My recommendation for regular HMG)
20m = 1000 DPS (optimal) 40m = 500 DPS 60m = 333 DPS 80m = 250 DPS 100m = 200 DPS
3.8-¦ spread (Not bad either)
15m = 1000 DPS (optimal) 20m = 769 DPS 40m = 384 DPS 60m = 250 DPS 80m = 185 DPS 100m = 151 DPS
Those numbers (2.8-¦ spread) would make the HMG king in <40m, suppressive from 40m to 60m and damaging out to 100m. It could now do point defense (as it would slaughter in CQC) and keep an enemy squad suppressed at range (300 DPS at 60m still hurts) while not outclassing the rifles (who have longer ranges) at their optimals of 50m+.
That there would help the Heavy class tememdously. |

But come on, it should still resemble a Heavy Machine Gun in spirit! Where if you're in front of it while it's firing, regardless of range, then jump for cover because it's going to hurt...
Heavies are slow, big, limited in slots, and have no equipment. As such, the gun they're carrying should make up for it in sheer suppressive power. |
