I sit here typing as I download a new patch. Version 3.12, a patch nearly 2.5 gigabytes big. Although I appreciate the effort put into this patch, and I have been rather excited about it's contents, I have one minor problem: namely that my PS3 shall now be unusable for several hours, possibly even a day and a half.
How is this something the DEVs should know, you ask? Why is it that I am whining here about my poor internet? Well let me tell you a story, young forum-goer. A relatively small company named FROM SOFTWARE makes a few games. You may have heard of Steel Battalion, which Microsoft killed, or Demon's Souls, which put them on the map, but what about Armored Core? Armored Core has a unique patching system: they place the patches on the PSStore and redirect you to it whenever a patch comes out.
Why is this good, you say? It's just more hassle! Well just you wait and see. The way PSStore downloads work, you can download them in the background, unlike patching updates. Whenever Armored Core updates, I don't have to sign my PS3 off to Limbo for the day. If DUST ever has such a huge patch again, could you please think of copying this manner of updating?
TLDR: No TLDR, read you fool.

You probably live in a population center. Lucky you. I live in the middle of nowhere, where even Steam takes ages to download and patch. If I were getting this through Dial Up I probably wouldn't even be able to enjoy the game due to the lag.

Zero, thank you for making mention of Armored Core, its one of my favorite all time games! And I strongly agree that AC has a superior game patching method. However until the PS4 comes out we wont have rolling patching that allows you to play and download at the same time. Which if you think about it that way, you wouldn't be able to do that with your kind of internet service anyway.

There was zero venom, I simply answered all conceivable questions as I got to them. The only venom was in the TLDR. Plus, slow internet or not 2.5 gigs is a LOT of stuff, and a PSN Store background update can be paused in case of, say, power outage, instead of being completely lost like a basic patchjob. Imagine the patcher screwing the pooch at 2.476 MB. That would make the strongest men fall to their knees in defeat.

I'm not talking about Rolling Patching, and I wouldn't really trust that service anyway. What I mean is the ability to patch game A and still play game B. My entire PS3 game library is unaccessable until DUST finishes patching. Several people in my area have actually uninstalled DUST and other MMOs because the patching is too much of a hassle, it is that bad. My point is, I would like to be able to play Disgaea or Dynasty Warriors while waiting almost all day for the patch, but no dice.

Background downloading of patches does sound like a sensible idea.
Not sure where it fits, priority-wise, though. It doesn't sound like it would be trivial to implement.

As far as i know the same effect can be achieved by uninstalling the game and re downloading it(may mot work til tomorrow and store update) in patch notes i think they talk about improvements to backend system for patching might help in future patches(on my phone cant link) |

It's why I used FROM SOFTWARE as the focal point, they were people I knew that did it, and were people on a very, VERY tight budget who still get the job done. I was hoping that that inferred that if they could afford the time and manpower to introduce such a system, then it had to be trivial of a AAA DEV team.
As for priorities, if you are able to have people patch in their updates without it eating their time, it cuts down on negative feelings. I'm having a hankering for some Dynasty Warriors, so I don't know if I'm going to jump into 1.7 directly after the patch because it is preventing me from slicing up ancient Chinese foot-soldiers.
