In Balac's Stranded chronicle he leads an experimental clone squad with Cala in a male body (Cala's female) and notes how odd it is and that their financiers probably said she could only have a male body in order to get her to withdraw but she still went ahead with it.
So yes, females can be put in male bodies and I highly suspect the reverse can also be true.

to be fair the brain is one of the least understood areas of modern science.
the brain, is in essence a computer. if someone took my brain out of my body and put in in a different body. I would still be me I'd just look different. consciousness of itself is not a thing and thus can't be transfered. consciousness as I understand it is the combination of 2 things, thought process and memories/experiences.
thought process is mechanical and deals with the way neurons interact with each other. everyones brain is "wired" differently, what neurons connect to each other determines how we think and what connections we make. if you were to some how transfer my memories and experiences to another brain I would cease to be me because that brain wouldn't be wired like mine.
the second part is memory, I have only the most basic understanding of memory. memorys are somehow encoded into the neurons of the brain. and again seems to have something to do with the neural map of the brain.
the most likely avenue to transfer consciousness between 2 people if for the clone to have a blank brain. though the brain has neurons they aren't connected to each other. the implant in the host would have a constantly updating backup of the hosts brain everything from memory encoding to a physical copy of which neurons connect to which. at the moment of death the implants emails(something like that) the fresh clone it's back up copy. from there the fresh clone constructs the neural map of the now dead mercenary and properly encodes the neurons to have all the memories of the merc. the new merc would of course know what happened and how all this worked. the old merc is dead but the new merc can pick up where the old one left off.
tissue transfer would be required for the old merc to be reborn in a new body.
sorta makes you question the morality of all this. thousands of versions of me lie dead to earn a fortune that they could never enjoy...
