Hey all, I'm a player who has been playing on and off since the closed beta. Having come back recently, I find myself getting frustrated that every time I start a match I find myself getting stomped by more experienced players with better gear. I'm not complaining about this. I'm just looking for some feedback from the community on what I can do or what roles I can serve that will help me to become better at the game without the frustration that going 4-15 in a match gives me. I love the idea that Dust presents, and I really want to play, but I am not having any fun getting stomped every time I log in. My exasperation is driving me from the game. So, my question is:
What can I do differently to make my experience less frustrating in a way that would make me better at the game?
Sorry if it seems that I am complaining, because I really just want to play this game and have fun with it. I'm an Eve player, and so I'm not new to a tough learning curve, but I am frustrated with the fact that I feel no reward (fun, experience, etc.) for playing as I am playing. |

As a new guy myself, I understand your situation. Find the right people to guide you to your goal. Know your goal and stick with it. Know your roll and stick with it. Try all the starter / BPO fits, mingle with them with the menu, item stuff. Keep it low cost and try them out in Pub matches. Go easy with a lil caution, get the hang of it and your own skill level. In time you will be rewarded with self satisfaction. And troll over in the other forum pages to seek info. There is plenty, you just have to sift through it to find content that you find useful. Enjoy!

Thanks for the time to reply, I will try being a little bit more careful than I have been. Lately I've been experimenting more with different roles (my oldest char is a logibro) because I don't think I've found what I'm good at but I think I will try to squad up more and use numerical advantage. Thanks! |

The numbers your going to get by squadding up will give you a huge advantage. Try and shoot at the same people your other squad mates are targeting. By focusing your fire you'll plow through opponents even when they are in full proto gear (which is really no garuntee of a win at this point thanks to the extremely low TTK but that is an entirely different discussion).
Another though is to really spend some time with your corp talking about how to spend all that passive sp you have built up while you were away from the game. Even if it is only a million sp it can still help make a massive difference in the the playability of a character if you put those points to use correctly. Use them poorly and you'll be joining the mass of QQ asking for a respec.
On that note of skilling make sure you specialize rather than diversify. After playing around with fits skill towards one role. Just one. Make all your points go into skills vital for that role.

I'm a vet that's been skilling up new characters to try out the new weapons in 1.7, picked up some stuff that might help keep you alive.
First of all, don't go anywhere alone, I don't care what you want to do in terms of capturing objectives or what have you, if you do it alone and your fit isn't as survivable as some you're at much greater risk.
Secondly, be a coward, if you see a threat that your gut tells you you may not be able to handle, turn and run. This is of course provided you haven't been detected yet so turning won't get you shot in the back.
And lastly, be a cheap bastard, use things like remote explosives and maybe shotguns if you don't mind the hit and run tactic.
If you want to stay alive, don't be a hero, pick your targets carefully and don't put yourself in situations that are too dangerous.
That being said this is also a game and if you're worried about you're kdr and not having fun then you're doing something wrong, again remote explosives are good here as they're hilarious to use. I'm heavily skilled into smgs for when I want to "go to work" but my favorite weapons are the forge gun, shotgun, and remote explosives, I think even the plasma cannon would be a fun tool, why? Because taking down 3 or 4 proto suits with a cheap shotty-scout fit is one of the most satisfying things you can do, as well as costing someone a thale with a 2740 isk militia forge gunner fit.
In summary, don't play on their level, you won't win.
This is a signature.

^ This a thousand times. I wanted to be a jack of all trades and it has gimped me. Play around with cheap fits. Once you find what you're good at and like, go all in.

I spent SP without giving too much thought to where it was going, resulting in poor skill choices. I can use some decent suits and weapons, but my skills as an FPS player are far behind where most other players I have encountered are. For instance, my aiming skills are terrible, and I can't seem to hit anything. Some combination of the two has left me in a tough place.

I see that you aren't a complete newberry, but this is good advice for anyone:
Get a suit to at least lvl 3 for some tasty bonuses as well as access to ADV suits for higher tier matches. Get your favorite weapon to Proficiency at least. No, you don't need Plasma Cannon Operation. Get your favorite sidearm to Proficiency. If you are a logi get ADV equipment at least. Despite all of this leveling aim to keep your suit as cheap as you can make it. Preferable under 25k so you can die a bit and still make some sort of money. Downgrade things if you must; ADV weapons are usually enough for anything. Teamwork is overpowered as all hell. Focus fire, use your equipment, communicate EVERYTHING. Oh yeah make sure you squad up. There's not much reason to run solo. And most importantly.... Max out Shield Upgrades and Armor Upgrades if you haven't done so already. Core skills are king.
Welcome back. Good luck

FIND A SQUAD!. this game is brutal as a solo player and you find dust a lot lot more enjoyable in a squad this is the root of most newberrys issues as they try and take on teams who have been playing for over a year by themselves

Really spec into a role and get good gear to compete. Adv level equipment is good enough to hold your own. Get all related skills to your tank and weapon you can. While training for this squadding up will be your best chance at survival. Learning tactics with your role and maps is key. Unfortunately leaving a game upon learning there is a full PC proto squad is sometimes the best way to go, cut your losses and save some rage. Good luck, shoot strait o7 |

There is good advice in this thread so I'm putting it back on the front page. Over time you can begin to use tactics that violate this advice. Scout assassins run solo out of necessity. You can add secondary roles such as anti vehicle and sniping after you get your core skills and primary role in good shape.
At 29 million SP I'm solid in logistics, decent at scout and sniper and still a rookie at vehicles. I have prototype in two basic frames, one logistics, one scout and four weapons. Even with that I'm still only at level 3 in many of the skills for a proper scout, such as biotics and profiles. The point being that despite playing every day and having a big pool of well focused skills I still only consider one role as solid.
Stay focused and work on core skills until about 10mil then start experimenting again to keep things interesting.

Ask for more help from your corp, stick with better gear players during a match, as a high sp proto player there is nothing more annoying than seeing random newbs running around going 0/10 rather than following the better geared players who are actually trying to win.
You are just as useful as anyone else working in a team but useless when you run around on your own not helping going 0/10 (iv seen 0/20) and essentially doing nothing.
Squad up with people, ask for more help if you need it and stick with the protobears in battle. If you are looking for more competitive matches then do factional warfare but I can't stress enough that its even more important to work as a team there.
None of that applies to scouts but a scout sticking with a squad is a beast.

Thanks for all the help everybody, I really appreciate all the input. Sticking with a more experienced squad seems to be the overwhelming majority of what I'm getting, so I will try my best to fill a hole in a more experienced group of players. Thanks a lot everyone, I think I will give it another go. It doesn't have to be a more experienced squad. Just running with 4 or 5 other players at your own level will make you much more effective than most of the randoms you'll be fighting. Learn from each other, swap tips, have a laugh.
Of course, if you can find more experienced players to squad with that is great.

Don't know if it to late to help out but some different advise compared to others...
Overspecialize, and you breed in weakness.....
keep options open... pic you main weapon and open most of the skill tree up... the bits that are important, don't worry so much about reload speed and ammo cap just yet (take those to level 2/3)
you will have more fun running around different maps in different fits as you will find there are a lot of AR users
Im a Sniper by trade, my main fit (skill tree complete)........ but also use Proto Swarm Lancher.... Adv AR/SR/LR./Repair Tool normally use this stuff when in a squad.... and most of the rest is standard...
As I don't go hard core all the time I find I have more fun doing different thing depending on the maps
